How rude!!! Yorkshire is full of beautiful areas the scenery they will be riding through is breath taking in parts, and Yorkshire has a great and varied history which formed our nation over many 100s of years, it has some beautiful stately homes which can rival any of the chatoux(sic) they show in France,

It is a beautiful and majestic place, I may be slightly biassed though

Never been to Yorkshire... so will be nice to see it on the screen, I do like the historical comments too... I follow it via French satellite... Just to keep my French up, I don't want to sound too Scottish lol

It's going to be just around the corner from me - in fact I drove part of it yesterday and someone had spray painted ey-oop froome on the newly resurfaced road!

But I will be in swingfields when they are in Sheffield.

Don't get me wrong, I'll watch it on TV, but a year build up just to watch a few guys go by on bikes is a bit much.

On a plus note you have another 364 days when the world's largest spirting event won't be inconveniencing you

. Though with only 18 minths noyice I can see why you haven't had chance to make alternative arrangements

I'll be watching from somewhere nr the top of Cragg Vale as its not that far from home.

Rode a section of Stage 2 last Sunday (Rochdale-Hebden Bridge-Huddersfield-Holmfirth-Oldham-home) and it was fantastic to see how enthusiastic Holmfirth is for Le Tour.

Hello all,

I enjoy watching it on television.

Some years ago, on the climbs, some ladies were lifting their tops and flashing their tits at the riders. i haven't seen that for a while, is it the television company's censorship or don't the spectators flash any more? (I guess the former)

Its full here don't come! No place to park within miles roads have "you will be towed" signs up the closest to the route to park will be 2-3 miles away and the cost is a min of £10 and don't even think of going to home moss its already booked out.

Yup, rode up the Moss the other week & every field is a campsite or viewing place, no parking anywhere. There's going to be a LOT of people spending money in each place it passes through though, heard tell they are looking at one million people per day so two million people across the two stages next weekend spending money...

It's coming through our little market town and the whole place is making a big effort. You can't walk around without seeing painted bicycles everywhere, shop windows all decorated. There's huge outdoor parties with big screens, concerts, fairs....its going to be brilliant.

It may be a long time before it comes through Yorkshire again so everyone is making the most of it.

Just back from a ride up Cragg Vale, miles of bunting and yellow bikes everywhere.

Lots of encouragement sprayed onto the tarmac of the climb and one big "where's Wiggo" in 10ft high letters :D

I'm going to walk up Blackstone Edge with a bottle of Vin Rouge, some baguettes and nice cheese & enjoy the experience.

It was announced over a year ago, plenty of time to have made alternative arrangements, which as it's such an annoyance might have been a plan.

We have a festival happening here for the next 5 days. 75000 people road closures, diversions, traffic chaos amd noise. I could get stressed ir just remember that for 51 weeks of the year it's not an issue

And that's a drop in the ocean for a large city to handle this is very different and obviously you don't have a clue on the logistics and problems its causing. The Majority of people are putting up with this event up here and don' want it. The logistics are struggling farmers who are in the middle of harvesting crops are pissed off and that's only the tip of the problems. What for? For some dopey sods to watch a few hundred bikes pass by in a couple of minutes? The whole thing was badly conceived and will no doubt lead to more dopy cyclists creating problems and road accidents trying to emulate their heroes.

"Just back from a ride up Cragg Vale, miles of bunting and yellow bikes everywhere.

Lots of encouragement sprayed onto the tarmac of the climb and one big "where's Wiggo" in 10ft high letters :D

I'm going to walk up Blackstone Edge with a bottle of Vin Rouge, some baguettes and nice cheese & enjoy the experience.

cant think of anything worse a load o dicks cheering on a load of Lycra clad drug cheats.. Id like to see it thru London let them be held to virtual ransom with road closer's and crowds parking up anyware they please... Fuck it off back to fucking france

You'll be glad to hear that as from next May you are getting a 3 day international race organised by the Tour de France in Yorkshire every year

I struggle to understand the vitriol for something that is easily avoided and is a once in a lifetime event

no i cant avoid it, the thing runs straight passed my apartment.. Yes i heard about the tour of Yorkshire what a waste of time money n resources once in a lifetime or not i had a flyer thru my door telling me when n whare i can go in my own town

It was announced over a year ago, plenty of time to have made alternative arrangements, which as it's such an annoyance might have been a plan.

We have a festival happening here for the next 5 days. 75000 people road closures, diversions, traffic chaos amd noise. I could get stressed ir just remember that for 51 weeks of the year it's not an issue"

And that's a drop in the ocean for a large city to handle this is very different and obviously you don't have a clue on the logistics and problems its causing. The Majority of people are putting up with this event up here and don't want it.

Ok so now we are dicks and dopey for watching the world's largest free to attend sporting event? And been as I am from round here I have to disagree with you. Everyone I know or have spoken to about it can't wait to see it, and that is including people who are ardent bike haters, because the understand that it is once in a lifetime that it will be passing through our town and showcasing what Yorkshire has to offer,

On a side note the roads shut at half 6 but are open until half 10 for cyclist and pedestrians, so my bike club are doing a ride up cragg and rippy bank early doors while the roads are shut, rock in the atmosphere

I wouldn't say expert but I do enjoy cycling and watching cycling, and can safely say I'm happy the tour is coming to town and will enjoy of minute of it, the roads are only shut for 12 hours on a Sunday it's not a massive inconvenience really

Wow! Such hatred for an event that will publicise towns, villages and cities globally.

The route was announced around September time if memory serves correctly so all you haters have had plenty of time to make alternate arrangements to minimise your disruption. Quit moaning.

Blimey - I'm glad most people I know are as excited as me about the Tour being in Yorkshire & then London. Sometimes we seem to have a strange attitude to big sporting events in this country. Surely it's a good thing , as it will encourage more people to cycle !

I recently helped make a short film promoting all forms of cycling in my local borough, it went live yesterday. Whilst Le Tour may not get many people joining clubs to race it may well increase the numbers who use bicycles as a form of transport & recreation which can only be a good thing for society as a whole.

"I loved watching the tour de france last year..manly for the narration about the areas en route ..dont think it will have the same appeal in Yorkshire

How rude!!! Yorkshire is full of beautiful areas the scenery they will be riding through is breath taking in parts, and Yorkshire has a great and varied history which formed our nation over many 100s of years, it has some beautiful stately homes which can rival any of the chatoux(sic) they show in France,

It is a beautiful and majestic place, I may be slightly biassed though"

Disruption happens with every major sporting event, I remember the furore over the dedicated Olympic lanes in London, I think most people thought that the games were a success. I m not watching the event, I m taking my two girls in the opposite direction so avoiding the disruption,

If you re going have fun take a brolly its likely to rain,

I have just read through this thread and it amazes me how some people can be so negative about one the worlds greatest sporting events, whether you follow or even like the sport its a privilege to host the tour de france as it would be to host any major sporting or cultural event in this country.

I cannot get up there however i will be watching the spectacle and anyone who is there in the flesh have a great time and a glass of something nice for jiggy

As some of you may know already I am French and been following LeTour for god knows how many years and am not even a cyclist!!

I will try to make sense now. Am glad it has opened its wings and visits nearby countries/cities. It's great for the towns visited and there's always a buzzing atmosphere. Plus restaurants, hotels etc... are more than pleased with it.

Le Tour has had its moment yes, like any other sports with this and with that... Some football players have been involved in prostitution and other illegal stuff... Shall we stop playing footy for the mistake of a few! Please don't answer that.

So what it's still a great event. And if it allows to put some spark in a town and get some kids to get out their bedroom away from the PS or Xbox and into the street and be involved in something that goes beyond their town well I say let's do it!

Time for some people to be proud of their town being picked, time for some people to get inspired and positive, may that be about a cycling event or a festival or anything else.

Anyone who wants to, feel free to cut me to shreds... Am only interested in positive post from open minded and tolerant people.

For those that know my posts.... That's my first rant

I have no interest in cycling or watching sport, it's just not my thing at all. But I still think this whole event is brilliant. Yes the roads will be closed and it will be busy... but it's only one day! Why all the whining and moaning? Just sod off somewhere else for the weekend if you don't like it. Sheesh.

The atmosphere is great, kind of like the buzz for the Olympics. I love the yellow bikes and bunting everywhere. Big yellow t-shirts on the side of buildings, even sheep with yellow shirts. Bloody brilliant.

Lemon is pregnant and was due to give birth 4 days ago. The tour is coming through our Market town and finishing in Harrogate, which ironically is where the hospital is. Are we going to be inconvenienced....yes. Are we pleased the tour is coming through our town...absolutely....I'm sure the place will be swarming with ambulances if anything happens.

The whole town has got yellow bikes...bunting...all windows being painted...it's a once in a lifetime experience and we are going to make the most of it and enjoy it.

I work with a load of 'football experts' i used to work with a load of 'football experts' every pub and all of the news papers are full of 'football experts' and its been headline news for the last 50 years if a mildly famous footballer caught a cold- you can't get away from it.

The main difference between football and cycling is that you only hear about cycling when a big event is on (such as TDF) and secondly, the UK has won numerous top honours in cycling....hows those footballers doing?

I do that the other way, my regular Monday evening session. Rochdale-Edenfield-Waterfoot-Burnley-Cliviger-Todmorden-Littleborough-home. 36 miles, just under two hrs.

It's a good ride. Very hilly coming from my end, it's 45.5 miles takes me around 2.45 with 3,500 feet of climbing

The main difference between football and cycling is that you only hear about cycling when a big event is on (such as TDF) and secondly, the UK has won numerous top honours in cycling....hows those footballers doing? "

Not many of them footballers being sent home early for being a drug cheat.. Yet the catch me if you can cyclists have already had one sent home and they ain't even got to the start line yet....

lots of footballers have been done for drugs.what do you think they are doing when the have a sudden "injury" and disapear for a few months

cycling in the big tours is the hardest sport on the planet, pressure is put on cyclists to win, performance drugs happen to work well with cycling.

cheating is visable in every football game ive watched this w.c

suarez for example did something far worse than jabbing a bit of test.

instead of criticising cyclist, watch and admire just how fucking fit they are

This is the 4th time the TDF has been the Brtain, I can't believe all the crap it is causing. It is a big thing for the UK to have it come here let alone have several stages here.

As for the slagging off of cyclists, how many foitballers would play for 3 weeks solid with a broken pelvis. Team sky cyclists did that last year, he stayed with the team as he didn't want tovlet the team down.

Footballers now need a stretcher if they get mud on their designer boots or haircut.

compare that to Stephen Roache appearing out of the mist at the top of La Plagne in the late 80's, closing the gap to a few seconds before collapsing with exhaustion as he crossed the finishing line and needing oxygen- yet there he was the following day to do it all again in his unmanly lycra

I can't work out if you're too lazy, far too wound up or just not too bright to participate in rational argument

The reason its here is because its now a traditional part of the event to visit neighbouring countries to promote the race and widen its appeal. As the UK has some world class cyclists and a surge in interest in the sport over the last decade, we've luckily been chosen to host the first few stages this year- as has been the case with other countries previously.

Now calm down cos nobody's going shag Mr grumpy pants

Hope you all have a safe trip to wherever you are watching from and you all have a lovely day surrounded by likeminded people.

After reading this thread I'll giggle to myself knowing there are a few lonely, miserable excuses for people incandescent with impotent rage at a 'mere' bike race being more important than they are

"

Not many of them footballers being sent home early for being a drug cheat.. Yet the catch me if you can cyclists have already had one sent home and they ain't even got to the start line yet...."

there are two reasons for this

1) cyclist have a "biological" passport.... which means they if certain levels are a certain % above/below where they should be.... they are automatically pulled out

its not presumed they have cheated, a lot of it is health, such as the froome case where he got an excemption to ride paris-nice whilst taking a medication that would normally be banned...

2) more importantly, under fifa/fa rules, you only hear about a drugs case if it is their 2ND offence, and they get a warning about future conduct for first offence.... under UCI rules it is 1st offence and they get a ban

Just watching some reviews of last years Tour, it's amazing what the human body can put itself through.

The furthest I've ridden is 400 miles in 4 consecutive days. I can only imagine the suffering that these machines go through trying to get to Paris first.

Hats off to every one of the riders that make it to capital.

Rode a nice 70 mile round trip to watch it in Addington. Turn out was immense, great atmosphere and it was quite obvious no one from Yorkshire was at all interested in as they stayed away in droves!

Brilliant ride in, lots of bikes everywhere and drivers accepting they weren't going anywhere fast so sat back and gave us space. Went a bit fast on the way in, passed loads & none passed us - only one passed us on the way back but it hurt!

Looking forward to watching again tomorrow, vin rouge, baguettes and cheese on the longest continuous climb in England - which i rode up on my way home

Have to say though, some appalling road skills from some cyclists coming away from the route. More than a few seemed oblivious to the fact they were no longer on a closed road.
