Been reading some profiles today and came across this phrase a fair bit, 'professional straight male'

just wondered how people read and interpret that statement with no punctuation. This is only for fun and I'm not being the grammar police. Xx

There are many calling themselves professional. I don't believe that they understand the double meaning.

It also amazes me just how many people who call themselves professional, can't spell the word.

You don't have to be able to spell professional to be one unless there is an unwritten rule somewhere.

I always think it means THEY (think they) are better than everybody else,a cut above you ,I and lesser mortals granting us a huge privelige and favour gracing us with their company..

Our language as complicated as it is, has severe limitations even for those with extensive vocabularies.

Ironically all workers are by definition professionals. But I'd guess the received wisdom would be that the claimant was a member of the middle class something like a lawyer doctor or business man etc. I suspect he wears a suit to work is the actual situation. Implying a level of education and economic status

At a guess he'd be from a working class background and has achieved his station in life of which he is unconsciously proud and is trying to impress females of the same station who may share the same aspirations and might be looking for a provider from such a demographic

Is this the kind of thing you were after ?

Some people seem to use professional to mean they wear a suit to work, and in some cases just that they are employed. Similar to the sporting meaning, as opposed to being an amateur. In the 'real' world, to be a true professional your job would need to be classed as a profession, ie to practice you are required to be a member of a professional body (and therefore follow it's code of practice, have required qualifications and meet certain standards).

To be a member of a profession is defined as someone who has studied/trained to a level required by a professional body, e.g. GMC or Law Society etc. for membership of that body. Those professionals will then abide by codes of conduct and practice, the regulatory body being there to protect the public from misdeeds. It does not mean wearing a collar and tie to work

I think this is traditionally the case. More recently though I think the are a number of times where you can legitimately claim to be a professional without the being a body that you have to be a member of to carry out that role. I'd certainly agree that wearing a suit to work doesn't make you a professional though.
