Has any one had free Solar panels fitted?

By free we mean the company fits them..you get cheaper bills..but they can sell any you do not use back to the grid.

Just wondered if it is a good deal?

Your thoughts good and bad please.

You need to find out first whether your house is facing the right way. Also what happens when you want to sell your house. Find out what the pitfalls are too.

They only cost around £6k these days for a full 4kW system. If there's any way at all that you can buy them yourself (cash, loan, mortgage, finance) you should go that route rather than having the free ones and take the full benefit for yourself.

There was an article on the wireless a few months about this the other month. The real pitfall is when you flit and find your roof is rented out for a period of years. Has has been wisely said, it's better to have them fitted and to reap the benefit yourself

Im not having anyone cashing in on our property, reaping cash on the backs of our hard earned home. Id sooner run around in a human hamster wheel to generate it than not reap solar panel benefits myself. The technology is improving and cost falling, so Im not rushing. If I was broke and likely to remain broke, Id possibly take a different view. Also look at issues of selling your home if you have it, as well as what may happen if that co gets taken over or goes bust.

I looked at it and was put off by the face you rent your roof space to the company and when you move you need to declare this as part of the sale. Also the pay back tariff changes Oct last year so not as attractive to the home owners. You also have the maintenance of the panels to consider as Solar is not a fit and forget products.

If you want to turn your roof into an electricity generator I would suggest that you do some research. There are flexible panels about the size of a roof tile available in the USA that stick to your roof, the tiles joining together in parallel that can be added to over time.

Dont know if they are available here yet...

Also there is a company here that make solar roof-tiles that can also be added to as you have the money, Remove as many tiles as you can afford and replace them with solar ones.

I would go one of the above 2 options...

Goverment controlled tariffs that are paid to you for energy you put back into the national grid may be staying low for some time, or going lower, but electricity charges will be going up. Huge worldwide adoption of solar power is really rushing equipment costs down, so it will be easier to get a quicker payback. Ok if you have the money somehow.

Two guys at work have got them. One has gone with the free panels, he says he's happy with the system. He just makes sure he does as much electricity using jobs as he can during the day.

The other guy got a loan and saves the money he earns so he can pay the loan off early....

Both say they are happy with their choice...

They don't tell you all and I don't know its worth it anymore since the price you get paid for generating electricity has been reduced. Free though it isn't they take the cost of installation and the interest on that cost out of what is generated and sold and the life expectancy of solar panels is not a lot over 10 years. Is it really worth it? Well financially probably not but its environmentally friendly if you are in for that.

I use solar lights indoors, as my tiny eco contribution. We have to reduce our oil dependency and cut emissions, otherwise our kids future world is more at risk.
