Cyber stalker/bully

O o O oo

I watched a woman on This morning saying that for five years she was cyber bullied/stalked.

She said evertime the man was banned from the music forums she used, he turned up again and mailed her, he mailed her friends/ he mailed her family. She complained to the police.

My question is, can you really be cyber stalked/bullied?

If someone was sending you mail would you just laugh it off and say here he/she comes again and block them until the next time? Or would it bother you so much that it takes over your life and you call in the police?

The woman said the person had mailed her family.......so I am assuming she must have given him information at some point ( although she said she hadn't)......but I am talking about people who know NOTHING about you other than your screen name on whatever site you are registered to.

Are you a person who thinks well they don't know me so it doesn't matter, or let it bother you to this extreme?

It all depends upon what information she passed on to him in the past. There is freedom of information in the UK however there are limits. Regarding mailing family well the mailing is not the issue but more the content of the messages. The police will advise on things but unless its of a malicious nature there is little they can do as its a "he said, she said" situation. Now if you have specific malicious messages with physical threats involved its a hole different case.

I would'nt let it bother me.........its just words on a page and its the net so you get your fair share of nutters and weirdos, thats why the block button is so cool

I think that sometimes people do give too much information away without realising it,that woman must have done for the guy to be getting in touch with her family

Well if you do give information away you can't really make much of an issue of it. Its easier to block move on and ignore on the whole.

She should have just e-mailed the bloke's Mum, she'd be furious and might even make him clean his own bedroom.

A great deal depends on the type of character you are.

I wouldn't worry. Ignoring is always the best option. Without food they give up and go.

If alarm bells rang i'd act though.

Stalked for five years sound excessive to me. Five years of him only approaching via mail seems that he wouldn't have gone further ........did she unwittingly make it worth his while?

Incidentally I get fed up of the word 'bullying' these days. No one can say or do anything without someone else calling 'bully'.

Yeah I agree, it seems to be the new black at the moment.

The police did investigate and found the man, who they said had learning difficulties, and they asked him to stop sending the mails.

I can understand if they were threatening mails, but I am assuming they couldn't have been that bad or the police would have had to act.

She just seemed to be on a mission and her mission was to clear up the internet of cyber bullies/stalkers........she might have a big job on her hands as what one person thinks is a stalker is just a pest who is mailing and can be blocked to another.

Normally sticking someone’s email address into google can give alarming results, and that’s from people who should know better, never mind vanillas or people not clued up about the Internet.

Would imagine if someone started messaging you with personal details you never told them etc, or started mentioning family or friends names that it would start worry even the people with the thickest skin out there.

But isn't that down to us to hide any information like that? IE only giving your mail out to people you trust and not having it connected to anywhere that they can get private information from?

Electoral roles for one, phone registers or if people have had a CCJ or a registered bad debt are some of the ways.

Thats the problem though, not everyone is internet savvy, and most online forums, auction sites etc include you're email address even when repling via forum boards, unfortunately not everyone knows these things.

Well you should adopt the same as you tell children to avoid potential on line threats. Hotmail accounts and judicious use of information passed out. But in reality its never been hard to find someone if you have their name. The phone book is the obvious one in the past.

It wouldn't bother me enough to get the police involved!

I'm sure we've all had someone we've given email/mobile number who has wished to remain in contact when you don't!

Currently have two who think texting and emailing will get me to change my mind. I just ignore...they'll soon get bored!

internet trolls (hate that word) some of the good ones can get ur address from ur ip adress and also they can hack into ur personal email and get any infomation they want, so even if u have told someone nothing at all if they knew how to they could get and find what they wanted. its easy to hack somethings.

But that would your real name to be given out for people to find you those ways.

I was talking more on the internet without giving any personal information out.....how would anyone know anything about you?

Exactly, the only way anyone would know anything personal about you was for you to give it out..even if they are not aware they are.

A lot of forums don't give out your E-mail address, the mail is sent anon...but I am guessing the ones that don't do that there must be an option to opt out.

It would probably depend on the nature of the person receiving the threats and the nature of the threat itself.

I would probably be a bit spooked, even if I hadn't given any personal information out but received threats from an unknown person claiming that they knew who I was, where I lived etc etc - even if they didn't know me - how do I know that ?

I don't know who's sending the message so I don't know what they may or may not know about me ...

I could imagine some people feeling very scared indeed

With so many keystroke loggers about you have to be so careful who your are chatting with. Its one thing on here where its relatively safe but how many say they don't have a picture here but can email you one. The problem then is they can slip all sorts into files sent by MSN or email and watch what you do and maybe send messages to family and friends. Lets say its unpleasant behaviour to say the least.

Stalked, I find it difficult to get people to chat in the chatrooms... Maybe I'm an 'OGRE'.....

That said, users should always be weary to the depth of information they share with others, my advice, get a 2nd phone ' swing phone' and use an email address that is not for normal day to day usage!

Of the 30y+ that I have been living in this country since my early teens, I cannot recall being bullied once.

I have always been able to fend for myself, and do not suffer fools.

I have not been a "victum" of anything.

I am aware I am not everyone's cup of tea, and have never tried to be the most popular/beautiful/intellegent/best in anything etc...

And I don't give two hoots what people think about me. If they don't like me, it is their problem, not mine!

Having positive mental attitude helps I believe.

Hence I can be perceived as being "cold" when I fail to appreciate other people's hardship, like when they are being bullied.
