Time has come to do the right thing and lay my best pal to rest I've had him for 15 years now and his been there with me through thick and thin and the most loyal friend I'll ever had & my little in adores him. Tough few weeks ahead

That's very sad but it's cruel to make animals live longer than they should for our own selfish reasons

Whilst your little one won't see it now, it's an important emotional development milestone to deal with loss such as this.

Need to know basis

I'm really sad to hear that! You've loved him and he's loved you...so many fond moments of joy and games. Your memory will keep him alive in your heart. I hope your little one will be ok soon. Children seem to forget and bounce back quickly!

Here's a very big (((HUG)) for you

This helped me, hope it helps you

If it should be that I grow weak,

and pain should keep me from my sleep,

then you must do what must be done,

for this last battle can’t be won.

You will be sad, I understand,

don’t let your grief then stay your hand,

for this day more than all the rest,

your love for me must stand the test.

We’ve had so many happy years,

what is to come can hold no fears,

you’d not want me to suffer so,

the time has come please let me go.

Take me to where my needs they’ll tend,

and please stay with me to the end,

hold me firm and speak to me,

until my eyes no longer see.

Please do not grieve it must be you,

who has this painful thing to do,

we’ve been so close, we two these years,

don’t let your heart hold back the tears

The death of a pet can be the first time a child experiences personal loss from death so you may find that your little 'un reacts more dramatically than you expect because it's such a shock to realise that it's forever.

Pets are such a fixture of our lives, always butting a head for a fuss and sticking their noses in, reminding you that they still need to be fed or exercised or attention no matter whether life has turned shifty or stressful or happy. Just by being always there and so simple to love and love you in return they leave a huge space behind them.

Hugs.

We have 2 dogs, they're only 9, but we already dread having to make that decision.

We were at the vets last week and someone their had a lad whose hips had gone, his eyes looked a mess and his fur was patchy with what looked like a kind of mange. I thought it would be kinder for him to be put asleep.

I really feel for you. Just treasure the good times mate.

My sympathies to you, and best of luck to your little friend on his next adventure. I've just come back from a dreaded trip to the vet with my little cat - we were expecting the worst, she had what the vet thought was a tumour on her heart but she's put on good weight, her chest is clearer and she's bouncing about like a kitten. They don't live forever, but the joy they bring throughout their lives is worth the heartbreak when they go. You've given your little friend 15 years of love, care and happiness, and he has done the same for you. You're both richer for that time.

Never get a pet. They lead you into a false sense of security!

Then they wrench out your heart so that from then on life never will be the same again!

I had to go through this last October when I lost my beloved 13 yr old springer spaniel. It was dreadful and I cried a lot. The vets were great tho and organised an individual cremation with a company who were also very sensitive. She now sits on my hearth in a spaniel shaped casket.

I loved her and she was an important part of our family. The house felt wrong without her. After 4 months I had another springer pup and ahead keeps me on my toes. Will always miss my other girl tho.

Best wishes to you OP x

Overwhelmed by your comments and thoughts - thank you all. Thankfully his other half should be with me a few more years so no rushing into getting another, although I'm worried what him going will do to her.

Just so glad money isn't an issue like it was a few years ago and have just booked a proper send off with a memorial plaque in the local park he used to love running in x

Thanks again all, crazy how fab can be a place to share your woes as well as your fantasies

Very raw subject for us - we had to have our 9yr old chocolate lab put to sleep on sat due to an inoperable cancerous tumour. She was a typical lab - friendly, laid back gorgeous dog and we miss her - mind not as much as our other dog - a rescue staffy we have had for 3 yrs. The lab accepted her into her home and they were inseperable - the staffy is such a lost little sole since sat.

I've been through this several times and it's always heart wrenching. I feel for you.

You can, at least, know you've done your absolute best for him right until the very end, in not letting him suffer.

My beloved rescue cats are well into their senior years now and signs of age are beginning to show. I dread the day I have to make the decision for them.

this..

one of our collies developed idiopathic epilepsy last Jul and whilst it was horrible seeing him have seizures and his reaction to one type of meds we both feel that his quality of life is the best we can give him..

Some people are more animal, than people lovers. Those that are, are reminded why....as animals don't leave silly comments, like this, at times of loss.

Trolls are still human, even though they may look like animals.

Maybe it's not as serious as say losing my dad which happened 6 months ago but to me he meant everything.
