We are due away on our jolly hols.

I (Sandie only 3rd time posting lol) doesn't mind flying but Bob (soft sod) is a bit nervy... I am talking so if'y that he's listening to the bloody wind blowing tonight and shaking.

Have you lot any advice to offer on calming his nerves

just don't watch 10 worst air disasters on Discovery in the days before you travel . . .

ps. Flying is statistically safer than driving. I've been flying regularly for business and leisure since was aged 12 and never had an incident so just sit back and enjoy the experience

Mind you, the in flight drinks were crap and no duty frees!!!

Failing that try to sit on the black box, it nearly always survives..

it probably will not make much difference what you do as his fear is at this point entrenched ...the wind will make little difference ..and depending on your direction could make the journey a little shorter .probably the best thing to do is distraction techniques ...talk to him before boarding about something unrelated to the flight ..the same thing during the takeoff,,,over coming fears can be difficult ,,For the future buy him a short flight in a light aircraft called an air experience flight ..they will explain exaclty why a aircraft is designed to fly and he will be in a no pressure situation to look around at instruments etc ask questions and not be commited to fly until comfy .it sometimes does work ...i am a trained pilot with a full license and instrument rating and when a passenger gets nervous in a light aircraft i normally ask them to help me out and do some sort of menial task for me..

if sitting in the front i will ask them to hold the control column ,,,its amazing once distracted how the tendency to panic disapears ....works for airsickness too lol

good luck ...his fear is real ...and cyclic and will get more irrational if you dont break it

ive always been nervous of flying but cope pretty well me thinks, though the first time taking off i nearly broke my mates arm and she was screaming as loud as me but because of the pain, lmao

im off tomorrow and fly out tomorrow night, so im hoping im windless and no bloody turbulance...hate that !

and a large stiff drink whilst flying works, then ear plugs in, eye mask on and sleep till till i get there

Peaches, I expect the rest of the passengers hope your windless too - could be a bit whiffy otherwise. Keep of the curry and brown ale before the flight pmsl.

Things not to do

Don't let him see the pilot, if the pilot does a walk and great while on Journy,this happened to me on a flight to spain, my mums first ever plane trip, pilot came along saying "hello i'm your pilot" my mothers words were an instant paniced "then who the fuck is flying!"

Also if sat neer a wing view, Don't under any circumstance say " hey look the wings falling off, when you see the air brakes being activated (a section of the wing slides back) my mum almost crapped herself...
