The UK government is giving £3 million in aid to Iraq.

Should we be giving that aid.

Personally we should not give foreign aid. iraq has oil revenue. And we have people struggling to make ends meet.

Me, i don't trust any government to do for their people what they should.

'Foreign Aid' is just 'cash for favours' in the long term in my opinion.

Saying that...we should have never been in Iraq in the first place so it's only right we pay towards stabilising the country.

3 million is nothing it's chomp change to the government however I think the English government like to give every other country money, bar their eon...it's shocking that as we country that people are using food banks to feed their family...it should be unheard of in England

Agree with you cheeky, charity starts at home, its about time the government sorted out poverty here in the uk first before helping the rest of the world.

While we're on the subject of foreign aid, we should stop giving money to India aswel, they have their own space programme for fooks sake, why are we still giving them millions every year?

the truth is, however people want to look at it..we invest in foreign countries, whether its financial/ethical...why?????????

we need the resources now and in the future.We may even need these countries in the far(to the human lifespan) future...global warming, most likely will make our lives in the west quite uninhabitable(unless u grow fucking gills), we will therefore need somewhere to live.

I predict we are making impacting on these 'foreign' countries by making them politically stable and infrastructured, so that in a 100years or so, that we can move in.

I work with a client who uses food banks to make ends meet. He is always in expensive Nike trainers and smokes 40 fags a day.

Very few people in this country are living in real poverty.

Yes there are those that take the piss out the system, I work within the system so see it on a daily occasion however I do think there are far more living in poverty than those taking the piss.

3 mil is a gesture in the big picture its nothing the govt make that within an hour on fuel duty alone

We should stop getting involved in other countries affairs. On the whole it seems to make things worse and not better. Iraq and Libya as another example seem to be in much worse state now than before we got involved militarily in those countries.

I agree with that to an extent but I have seen people offered solutions sometimes to excessive living costs. They say I am not living in that place it's well rough.

I don't call that living in poverty.

The invasion was a terrible mistake.

As for poor people in the UK, we could help them if we wanted to. We have the money and resources. But most people think that's a bad thing too (see any thread about benefits).

... and besides, £3 million is fuck all if you're a politician or just rich and powerful. David Cameron spend £15 million of tax payers' money on a three day trip to Switzerland - Philip Green (owner of M&S) dodges about £380 million in unpaid taxes every year.. the list goes on.

I'm happy for money to be spent in foreign aid - whether that's to support famine relief, health programmes, assistance after natural disasters - or to help generate political, economic and social stability.

The mindset of 'look after your own and let others do the same' doesn't work - short term or long term. If things aren't looked at on a global perspective there'll just be far more Syrias, Iraqs, Ukraines and Somalias - countries with civil wars dominated by either religious fanatics or political dictators hell bent on ethnic cleansing, population migration and persecution based on religion, ethnicity or culture. Which creates massive problems for both those countries bordering these regions and the rest of the world too.

We're lucky. We're an island. And whilst (some of) the scots are seeking independence they're not killing each other for believing in another god, forcing those not with the same agenda over the border and not forcing their religious/political beliefs on the remaining population.

Yes there are food banks and poverty in the uk.

But I've yet to see famines on the scale of Ethiopia, civil unrest as is happening in Iraq - or the kidnapping of young girls as in Nigeria.

So if you begrudge a country such as ours stumping up a few quid - just be grateful you're not living in the country that aid is destined for !

we sit in this country(and I know there are shortages in finances), and we relish our rich n famous, we pay to have a monarchy..yet when it comes to giving money elsewhere we scream the other countries are greedy?

bizarre logic if I've ever heard it.

like I've said...we WILL at some point need foreign aid..it might not be financial aid..it will be about the basics of human survival.

Its a tough one

problem is its always the innocent that suffers

some countries that get aid may well have rich government's that would sooner spend their money on other things than feeding their own, but if we stopped helping would their governments start handing out money to their people? Course not, so we close our eyes to starving kids too?

The conflicts in the Middle East were exacerbated and new ones created by the partitioning by Britain after WWI.

We have continued to meddle, to fund individuals and factions to suit the needs of the West. We then expect countries that have been dictatorships to have mature (I stress mature) democracies and stand on their own two feet immediately. Yet we still meddle.

The world has boundaries created by different power factions. The world we live in is inter-connected. £3m is nothing compared to what we have spent to create instability and the prop up the causes of poverty and the need to send aid in the first place.

If anyone is naive enough to think that the same £3m could be spent here to provide support for British people you miss the point about the political ideological space we current occupy: our 'poor' are feckless, scroungers stealing your tax money.

even though he was a blood thirsty dictator, when was the last time you heard of civil war in iraq?

indeed, never.

he ruled by fear, and by doing so, he kept all the different factions in check.

in fact, back the Iraq was somewhat of a superpower in that region.

not anymore.

its government is toothless and gutless and begging the public to arm themselves and fight insurgents.

we took that stability of being told how to live, away from them.

democracy is great, for those that know how to use it.

this region of the world isnt ready for democracy

they have lived under the fist of an oppressive dictator for too long.

so yes, we owe them.

3 mill is piss all.

it wouldnt buy a pie for each of the homeless, so whats the point crying about it

I always wonder on these posts where people moan about the state of things, what are they contributing? Are they volunteering support to those affected or making positive public contributions, financial or resource based? Challenging policies or speaking to local MPs and all those avenues etc?

Every government makes massive decisions and gets several wrong, however there is no point being idle when moaning or looking at what others are doing, if you're passionate then use that for the cause, that's what I say anyway....

Indeed. Plus, if the Government said 'Ok, we won't give that 3 million to Iraq, we'll put it towards the benefits budget here instead' then my hunch is that the exact same people would be complaining about money going to scroungers.

A lot of people just don't want to help anyone (other than themselves, obviously).

The 'look after our own' commenters need to get out a bit more. One day it could well be your children/grandchildren hoping for handouts from elsewhere in the world. That's without taking into account just how much our country has already taken to create the very comfortable existence we can take for granted.

It was Labour who took us into the illegal war in Iraq under Blair/Bush and a coalition of the willing. Blair and Bush went into Iraq for oil but its been covered up. You could also say the tory/lib dems went into Libya and the real motivation there was oil aswel?

Not much oil in Syria and thats why we are not going in there?
