"... its like attending an orgy to cheer someone else on! I'd watch that, as long as there weren't too many adverts. ![]() Once the game of football kicks off, you dont get adverts until half time. Top Tip: If you dont like adverts, put the game on just as it kicks off and go and do the dishes at half time. As soon as it ends, change the channel. Its one of the best things to watch if you dont like adverts - 45mins without a commercial break - thats not bad. Its even better on the BBC

Its not obligatory to watch, turn over! ![]() There is no escape! its everywhere. all the blokes i work with, it is their sole topic of conversation. i have 3 brothers and none of us are sports fans. two of them are lifeguards/gym instructors. football coverage has grown exponentially in the last 30 years. it used to be the last 2 min of the news. now it saturates the media, at the expense of the arts, journalism, documentaries. the rest of tv is poorer because of the tv execs attitude. 'a gap in the schedule? fuck it, put a match on. japan v gambia- that will do, theyll watch anything with a football in it'

Exactly football isn't really a sport at all....no more than WCW is anyway....bare with me The vast majority of 'football fans' don't actually play and just watch it. The percentage of people who actually kick a ball must be minuscule Ergo football=WCW=entertainment My things are snowboarding skateboarding and surfing....I suspect that of those that watch these things on TV the vast majority participate I have watched skaters take big hits, break bones, dust em selves off and carry on....it's a badge of honor not to whinge when hurt...a lot more hardcore than football plus more popular round the world too I suspect... Football is also played around the world. Yes footballs will throw themselves around, but not all of them. Cheating happens in most sports, at all levels. Ive also seen footballers get up, dust themselves off and carry on, Ive also seen them given emergency treatment on the pitch and stretchered off to hospital. Football is still a sport, it always will be, its also a business bit like skaters who sell video games, boards and open skate parks.

"Considering most of the games are gonna be played late in the evening, we're not really that arsed about seeing them. Considering the usual mania that surrounds England and a World Cup, I think this one seems to have sneaked in under the radar really. " I thought it was all at stupid o clock but it seems not. There are a lot of 5pm, 6pm, 8pm and 9pm kick offs. If England start with a win vs Italy it wont be under the radar anymore. I agree though the hype this time is lower, thats because for once, at the moment, expectations are lower and sensible.

Whats wrong is peoples assumptions about non sports fans (like your assumption that i think im above them). but when i try to steer a conversation away from sport it USUALLY falls on deaf ears. i am lucky in that my family and friends either understand or are in the same boat. by all means run, jump, punch, kick and throw or watch people do it. just dont be so suprised that we dont all enjoy it.

You really don't get it do you? lol. Not as simple as saying lets score one more goal than the other team, football is a very intricate and tactical game, different formations, etc, so there is lots of analysis to be done when you break it all down. I think Brian Clough once said football is not a matter of life and death, its much more important than that. I very much doubt you will see the passion shown in the sport of fishing compare to the passion that the beautiful game known as football will easily generate. I know England don't have much chance of winning but hey the world cup is a festival of football celebrated by football fans all over the world (Yes once every 4 years), if you love football you want to see the best players in the world play, you want to see teams like Brazil, Spain and Argentina play. Now i hate the X Factor and Britains got talent and anything else with Simon Cowell in it but his face is always on the telly and there when you open a newspaper or a magazine these days and i've had to suffer over a decade of his programmes being on the telly every single year. My solution to this problem is simple,.....when X Factor is on or BGT is on i turn the channel over. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

On dealing with player disagreements "We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide i was right." 2. On aerial football..."If God wanted us to play football in the clouds he'd have put grass up there." 3.When i go, God's going to have to give up his favourite chair." 4.On offside rule "If any of my players are not interfering with play, then they are not getting paid!" 5. "I would'nt say i was the best manager in the business, but i was in the top 1". ![]()

"Can't stand football and all the hype that surrounds it. And while im not alone in that _iew l realise an awful lot of people are passionate about it. The world cup, (in a similar way to the Olympics) is about a lot more than the individual matches and it should be covered extensively. Personally it will probably pass me by and I'll be oblivious to most of it unless england do unexpectedly well. I generally don't watch ITV or BBC1 so it won't effect my TV _iewing. I get my news online so it won't particularly disrupt that. The pubs I go to tend to be music orientated but I guess there's a slight chance it could impact there... And hopefully some nights the gym will be quieter! In all honesty if I got upset about my favourite TV being disrupted by tge World Cup I'd probably be asking some questions about what was lacking in my life rather than bemoaning the world cup. The only real irritation are the unrealistic expectation of success and the delusion that England are still a significant team" There isn't any real expectation this world cup to be honest, with the fans or media. England are still a significant team though who on there day can beat any team in the world.I doubt that they would be able to do that consistently enough though to win a major tournament at the minute. ![]()

"I have been sick of football for 29 years. I will be avoiding it like the plague!" Good luck it will be everywhere. Each time a WC comes round the profile rises, due to the internet, facebook, twitter, digital radio stations, tv, catch up tv, you will be bombarded with it. Dont take it personal, they are not aiming it at just you, the majority like it so they make you put up with as much or as little as you can handle for 3 whole weeks

"I have been sick of football for 29 years. I will be avoiding it like the plague! Oh come on its not contageous. ![]() What the obviously die-hard footie fans can't recognise, is that Football simply takes over everything in life, whether we want it or not! A previous reply asked why all the fuss about an event that occurs once every 4 years? If only it was just that??? But it isn't! It is an event sandwiched in between the end of one Football Season and the start of the next. It "invades" our TV, Radio and other media schedules, as if the Media powers that be believe we should accept wall to wall coverage??? Why can't it just be a simple case of one TV channel broadcasting all the matches, leaving the other channels to run normally and show options for those people not interested in football in the slightest. Yes, it makes sense to have a passion in something you like, but not at a level where it takes over everything!

"I have been sick of football for 29 years. I will be avoiding it like the plague! Oh come on its not contageous. ![]() If you put all the games on just one channel then I dont think you would generate as much money through adverts. You would need to employ less people too. Its a good point though, it would allow you to avoid it. But then so does a tv remote. I dont think games will be shown on all terrestial channels at the same time, it'll be just the one in fact. The BBC will no doubt be spending a few million pound broadcasting about it, bit like the olympics. Hopefully this will go on and inspire a future generation too.

"I have been sick of football for 29 years. I will be avoiding it like the plague! Oh come on its not contageous. ![]() Yes it is. During a normal football season I never have to watch it or hear about it. It happens, but its on satellite TV and I can pass it by. Then every bloody two years (don't forget the Euro games) its on terrestrial TV, the news, the radio, the indents, in the pubs, on cars, billboards, and websites. I can't ignore it, ever! people say 'well turn the channel over', but to what? For a few weeks it is on TV, every channel. All. The. Time. People say that BGT should be like that, or Baking programmes, and maybe it should. But I bet if Masterchef was on every night for a month people would soon complain. Actually, bad example that! ![]()

The reason I picked News was an example of things saying the same thing but on other channels. 6pm - BBC1, Itv, Sky news, BBc news even frigging Al Jazerra telling us the same thing. 7pm - C4's turn. If a game kicks off BBC1 at 6pm, put ITV on until approx 10pm because if ITV will show highlights (guess).
