Hey. Windows 8.1 is known for freezing issues aa of the latest update. Especially when it comes to external accessories such as mice an keyboards. I personally dont like windows 8 at all. Windows 7 ultimate is more user friendly and causes little issue wise. But you could try the followin to troubleshoot

a) Press Windows key +F to bring up the search Charms bar.

b) Select "Settings" in the drop down menu below search and type "Troubleshooting."

c) Click on "Troubleshooting" and select the view all option on the left pane.

d) Click on "Performance troubleshooter" and follow the prompts.

Seems to be an issue with driver compatibility with windows 8. Hope this helps or sheds light on the issue. Im sure a patch will be sent out soon to reslove these issues

To be honest, if it is like that out of the box.. I'd take it back.

If it was just the touch pad not working I'd say to look for a key with a picture that looks like a touch pad (F9 on mine) and press Fn key plus the other (F9) key. This switches touch pad on and off.

Have you accidentally disabled the touchpad?

I think it is perhaps shift and either F4 or F5 to toggle it on/off
