A few conversations recently have shown me how fortunate I am to be surrounded by people who can do practical things and will do so out of friendship, love, in return for cake (one of my practical skills) or at mates rates.

How do you manage with those little jobs you either don't have the knowledge or skill for or the tools/equipment?

It would be a dear do hiring someone to do all the little jobs around the house.

I do it all xD usually with duct tape. Although I do need some help tracking some wires over my living room door.. I keep tripping on them xD

I have met 2 couples on this site that I now do regular jobs for around the home and garden and I do charge a lower rate as they are such enjoyable company. I never thought I would get work out of this site as well as so much fun.

Jobs on my 'to do' list currently. ..

Remove kitchen tap and descale internal connector.

Mend kitchen door (bifold with a track at the top) which has dropped so the peg that runs along the track keeps shifting out of the track and getting jammed.

Put up a curtain track.

Make a printer stand (from plywood offcuts) so I can store the paper underneath it.

Neither of us are DIY minded

We have some simple minor jobs that'll take someone a couple of hours, knowing where to look for someone is harder than the jobs

Having already taken it apart once to work out the problem, it actually looks pretty straightforward.

The only difficult part will be lifting it out and manoeuvring it somewhere to work on and then replacing it. It's fecking heavy and, of course, a close fit in terms of size in the doorway!

I tried to type an explanation of the problem but it's difficult to explain clearly.

Basically the wood of the door has become worn and it's dropped down over the adjustable pin that's supposed to keep it lifted to the right height to stay in the track.

Some resin anchor to fill the wood and fix the pin back where it needs to be will sort it out.

My dad pretty much did most of the work in my flat, my partners dad does things half assed. Still waiting on my flooring in the kitchen to be put down properly. Im this close to doing it myself haha

I prefer to do things myself because they get done properly.

If I make a mistake I redo it.

There's perfect or there's not good enough. I have no "that'll do" setting.

I'll have a go at some DIY but leave the more challenging stuff to the specialists.

It's amazing how many "frends" one can have if one declares oneself handy x I don't tell anyone what I do or what I can do .I would ask plumber if he would offer his swinger rates to all the men on fab ?

Could they not add it as a filter then if your looking for a certain trade just filter everyone else out ?

Better than check a trader and with benefits ?????

I will "mess" with gas I installed a heating system a couple years back and as I thought rightly invited a recommended gas safe / corgi guy to do the gas install . Day later gas smell due to bad day fitted union to boiler luckily I found it and fixed it in time x big note most gas fitters are very well trained experts and must be used and trusted !! However I now do all my own work and have it checked as apposed to other way round , including solid fuel and liquid xxx I would always advice a little research so you can inspect a professionals work with an informed eye x all humans are fallible. in our industry all work is quality checked by one or two engineers xx

We get our windows cleaned for free and its a guy off fab he does it when Im at work and the wifes in ..doesnt charge either ! what a nice chap ..always at our house 3 hours though lol ..must be thorough

I am an ex mechanic, who now teaches car mechanics, ran a 13 room guest house for many years and did plenty of DIY then, often had the learn as I went along, so I guess I an very handy
