Self defence for women

Ok , I've just been watching ziva on NCIS kick butt, and although I know I would never be as good as her character I would love to learn a martial art, I did do some kick boxing about 15 years ago. But stopped because the local classes stopped .

Anyway I have done some research and there are so many different types I don't know where to start. I am looking for confidence building, self defence and fitness, can any one offer me any advice?

Ps please bare in mind I'm getting on a bit

For me ju jitsu / judo are the perfect weapon for women who want to defend theirself! Both are designed for smaller people to defend themself against bigger opponents. You can throw youre oponent to the floor and choke them out or where ju jitsu is at its strongest you can deal with someone on top of you and also attack them from being underneath

Judo is great for women, it's more about defending yourself and defusing the situation by throwing then rather than having to hit them

I used to do kick boxing for ages when younger and my kick is usually pretty good...I used to carry my own spray thing which was scotch bonnet cut up and put in vinegar....not anymore though I was always scared if I used it that I would be the one in trouble

I would second this. Ju jitsu would be my recommendation. Techniques can be learned relatively quickly 1 or 2 years. It is also realistic with minimal training injuries

Ju Jitsu gets from us. We both did it for a few years and would love to do it again but we lucked out with our first club as it had an absolutely incredible Sensei and we've just never found a club like it since. I remember them once doing a show for the public sparing up some of the kids from an earlier session with the more beefy guys in our session. It really is quite incredible watching a 12 year old nerdy kid throw a body builder over their head lol Great great fun, awesome people (if you find a good club), and a fantastic work out

For me its the perfect one for women because heaven forbid they were in a situation where they maybe raped, they would be perfectly placed to use ju jitsu techniques

Another Ju Jitsu fan here, it's the perfect self defence course and is less "agressive" than other martial arts.

Or try aikido if there are no jitsu clubs near you

Doesn't always work, a swift kick to someones knees usually has more effect.

This is great to hear, my daughters have been doing jiujitsu for a few months and eldest will be doing her grading for second belt in a few weeks I may have to look at it for myself as so many of you recommend it

Go for it! Im getting back in to it at the end if the month! The only downside to doing it is big sweaty guys pressing their hairy chest in my face

You ladies wont have that problem!

Thanks guys, I've re looked at the classes available in my area. There is a class in ju jitsu not far from me, so I'll give them a call tomorrow.

You can never stop learning! You shouldnt fear the man who practices a thousand moves but the man who practices a move a thousand times! "

I know some teachers live a really long life and are still alert in this area and keep themselves fit to the point they can keep up with youngsters. Like there used to be an 85 year old master and he could run round the young masters who he was training and they claim days before his death. He was still learning.

I did some boxing years ago and wasn't bad, but pretty soon twigged on the best way to avoid being hit was to follow my Grandad's advice.

He was involved in a fight in 1929 and some unpleasantness in the early 1940s, but otherwise went through life without any strife. His idea was think what you like, but it doesn't mean you have to say it.

U can buy a spray legal here called defence id which sprays a purple dye nd marks any woodbe attacker.

unfort theres alot of crap talked about self defence, the old kick em in the balls isnt as easy as people may thing, if its self defence your after then you have a few options, for women brazilian Jiu Jitsu (though not the sport version) is very good as it deals with attempted rape types positions and many other factors, muay thai is also good from a striking prospective but ultimatly its the way its trained that matters, if you want more advice ill be happy to help, i am a proffessional martial arts instructor just send me a personal message and ill help were as much as I am able NSA

If you sense a threat from somebody keep your distance even if that means you move away. Try and go to a crowded or public location such as a cafe or petrol station. As a last resort if you attacked use maximum force and shout as the attacker won't want the attention. Finally if the person has a knife or blade try and run as even self defense moves may not help.
