Are there any jobs?

a very plush appartment off junt 7 M5

My friend has been told to get a job now that her children are all in school but she is finding it difficult as none of the shops are taking on staff.

Shop work would be ideal for her as she does need to be home to do both school runs.

There are jobs.... You just need to find them.

Perhaps she could temp while she's looking. That's what I did when I lost my job last October. Its not guaranteed to last for ever but its better than the £64.30 a week.

There are lots of job websites too where you can receive emails suited to the experience you have.

Hope she gets sorted!

If she has been out of work for a while might be good to do some refresher courses and get her cv up to date. Offer to volenteer in the school dinner duty or playgroup/surestart centre or charity shops to get the experience and to help build her confidence.

temping agencies are good for stuff like this... agencies like adecco always have stuff, it may not be the most glorious work... but its better than 64.30 as estee said....

but does volunteering get you paid work when there is none around?

She would need money to retrain, money that she does not have.

Kate has been told that due to prospective cuts in spending by the local councils, her job is being reviewed and she to be aware that she might be made redundant.

They've only been in 2 fooking weeks and government cuts are already hitting us

And once you've done one contract with them and shown you're reliable it often leads to other things. And if they haven't got work for you that week, ring them and pester them and you do jump to the top of their list - 'cos they want you to stop hassling them!

I looked into going back on to income support when my work cut my hours but as my daughter is nearly 8 I would have to go on job seekers. I still get my tax credits and found another way of making a living.

volunteering shows employers you're not a slacker....and does not affect benefits if she's getting any

labout would have had to have made the same cuts though..... but cuts means less jobs not more ... so where are all these jobs coming from I wonder

I'm in a similar position in that my job is due to finish in 2 weeks. There are jobs out there, it's just a case of looking harder. I don't mean that to sound like you're not looking, just that they're not as obvious anymore and it's very much a case of who you know rather than just your experience / qualifications.

I've been knocked back for jobs recently because i'm over qualified and they think i'll always be looking for something else.

I have no children, no savings but thankfully no mortgage or rent to pay so at least i'll have a roof over my head but it's worrying times for everyone at the moment.

Good luck to all those looking for work xx

i would get that double checked...

when i was starting out and temping... even though it was minimum wage we still get some kind of single tax credit to bump that up.....

thanks love

It is tough for everyone I think

not everyone can retrain and people with health issues find it all so tough like me

I would like a part time job also like my friend, but NO ONE is taking anyone on near me...

And I do have rent to pay..

I need a lottery win haha

sighs

The thing is tax credits for a family bump your income up but my friends children are not babies but they still need her

she has to be there once they get home from school as no one else wil be

but no shops near here need staff, so what else does she do?

She doesn't drive so even a trip to the job centre takes a lot of time and money that she doesn't have to spare

To be honest I've never bothered with job centres as I have found one or two decent agencies to be more helpful.

It might be worth looking into seeing what help can be given if you want further courses / classes to help. I know some of these aren't cheap but you'd be amazed at the financial help out there sometimes.

I'm not fussy about what work i'd do, but i've worked my way up to a level that excludes the lower level of work and also the lower salaries

when you look at job vacancies in jobcentres they are all through agencies!,low rate of pay,no overtime rates for weekend work,no lodging allowance if having to work away from home!.

you fill in the paperwork at the agency and then you have to do a 6 year olds intelligence & maths test, then when you ask about the job vacancy you came in originally for they tell you it has just beebn filled!,but do keep ringing in they say!.

bah!,humbug!.

thats my rant for the day.

My youngest is due to go to fulltime school in about october time. I have it seems until he is 7 to get myself off income support and into a job with job seekers or whatever its called.

As a single parent, I have no partner to rely on to pick up from school runs and have no car and live in a small town. So this limits me lots.

But instead I fill my time working about 20 hours or more a week doing voluntary work and have been for 2 years now.

This shows prospective employers that I am no slacker and have done work to keep myself current and busy and do it to give back to society. I know that the skills I am currently using in vol work are going to be great ones when looking for the none exsistent work possibly, or the ones that are there but I cant get to or do due to being a lone parent.

I suggest all those who are on benefits to do some vol work as it does show people your competant but just not paid for it.

I do this work, while little one is at nursery and then at home on my computer in the evenings when the kids are in bed.

Really hope for everyone at some point there will be more jobs than people wanting them, so now as I get down off my fantasy cloud I will wish everyone luck in finding work. xx

little house on the praire

If she is only prepared to go for shop work then she is going to find it hard. Unfortunatly in this day and age you have to take whats out there. My son has to clean offices from 4.45am to 8am so he doesnt have to claim dole.

As some have said voluntry work is a good idea it wont affect the money she is already on and looks great on a cv. Even if she just worked in a charity shop a couple of hours a week

Here's a thought for you all?

How about sorting out one job per household ( man and woman, husband and wife, not a house with six adult kids etc ) first so that everyone gets a chance?

i did voluntary work the last time i was out of a job. it was with the local youth group and then the summer playscheme. got great experience from it!

i wish i could have found a job that fitted round school hours and not wk ends but its nigh on impossible!

apparently the government want 1 million people off the dole and add that to the 2.51 million already unemployed and the amount of jobs available the sums arent adding up!

before i had my childminder and was working, my friends and me had a wee rota of who picked kids up if someone else was working and as a lone parent it was a godsend to me to have them there to pick her up after school when i was working x

if there is only 1 adult in the house, its down to you and you only

Ideally I would love a working partner that would pick up a share of the cost of running this place.
