Has anyone got any tried and tested methods for alleviating back pain? I suffer from chronic pain in my lower back just above my hips.

Any advice?

Tens machine didn't work for me

Ask for 500mg naproxen and 500mg cocodamol off your doctor, get a massage, do some back exercises and yoga

I've been the same as you for nearly 4 years

Yup, an inversion table!!!I have a lumbar compression and every time it gets bad a few sessions hanging myself upsidown sorts it out - that and a bag of frozen peas, it loves ice!!! I got a professional quality £360 Kessler off ebay for £21.

Here's the ghastly American infomercial on Teeter tables - but it does contain all the info.

Swimming maybe? It won't treat it but the weightlessness (what a word!) might be nice for an hour or so? I have sciatica and when my back goes I just lie in bed feeling sorry for myself

You have to be careful with swimming. Doing it properly can help a bad back, but a poor technique is bad for the back.

By the sounds of your user name you are spending far too much time on your hands and knees stretching your neck maybe a little less loving.

I went to a chiropractor (I was unable to bend or stand, I had 40% movement)

It cost a bit but within about 8-10 treatments, of going above and below the problem vertebrae, the final pop happened and I stood up and put my jeans on without thinking.

Never had a problem since.

If you decide on one, make sure they are registered. I opted for a full xray - you could visibly see my spine had an odd angle in it - as a result he knew exactly where the problem was)

Good idear to find out the reason for your back pain first? ie mri scan via dr's? . Only say this because some physio and even swimming etc can infact make things worse..

Once you know why your back is paining you, maybe propa physio for that specific problem would help, in the mean time, warm wheat bags and anti inflamatory gels directly on your back may help? Nothing worse than back pain, hope it eases soon

I've really bad back pain for tge last 2 weeks. I run competively and have been training 2 hard. As long as it's muscle pain and not a bulging disc you're ok, though still painfull. I've tried difene, etoflam, solpadeine, valium, difene spray, keral, xprim. Not all at once. These will only ease the pain and sometimes one thing eorks when another doesn't cos muscle spasm tends to move around. What works for me is wear runners or very comfortable shoes with good support. Lie flat on your bsck on a hard bed with no pillow and your knees bent up so you're not using your back to support your body weight. And try a physio that will do acupuncture or dry needling.

Yes absolutely, Bad backs are usually the result of spinal disc compression. Due to misalignment of the vertabrae. Swimming can cause movement of the vertebrae and increase the pressure. This happened to me on holiday and caused a lot of probs in the bedroom dept.

I get that same pain but have been working on my core strength for a while now and fingers crossed has not been as bad.

I will lay flat on my back and raise one leg and hold it bent against my tummy and chest for 12 secs and swap from left to right. The lay on the edge of the bed and have your leg drift over the side of the bed whilst your shoulders point the other directions and do that for 12 sec x 3 each side.

Yes, of course it is always advisable to get a diagnosis - and yet sadly the NHS is almost totally useless in this regard when it comes to 'a bad back'!!

Most of us are left to find out by a process of trial and error, and often being persistent and demanding investigations, plus talking to professionals and eventually 'deducing' what the problem is - and therefore what treatment and or management is required. Some of the exercises given to me by the physio made my beck WAY worse!

I now know I have facet joint inflammation from lumbar disc compression, so ice and traction are the best treatments, and sitting causes me the most problem.

i recomend sarah keys back sufferers bible, she was prince charles osteopath.

walking or cycling is good, i used to ride my bike everywhere though and only when i started going for walks as well did it get any better, i used to see an osteopath as well.

i also bought a obus forme orthopedic back rest from my osteopath have had it for 25 years i bought it for £65 it made a difference to my back as soon as i started using it.

yeap i hear this all the time re physio! They are happy to put all down to ' mechanical back pain' and carry on regardless of further damage that can be caused ... I know of one person who was given very hard work outs in a physio gym, for chronic back/ leg pains, and when eventually scanned , had several prolapesd discs! Physio still saying muscle/ mechanical back pain! She had to have emergency spine surgery too!

Many think its a joke when people have a "dodgy'' back.... But at times it can be a very serious symptom if left un diagnosed and un treated

Exactly so. With facet joint interference the last thing I needed to do was extension exercises and I was astonished when the hospital physio I was referred to 'confessed' the exercises she gave me were entirely generic and may be totally unsuitable for me! FFS!! Luckily I just refused to do anything uncomfortable, and worked the rest out for myself when only traction gave relief. Considering my inversion table cost less than one osteo visit I consider it a very sound investment (though I do see her if I come off a horse, haha!)

It all depends why you have the pain. Sports massage can make things like arthritic pain worse but good for muscle pain. Pain is our body telling us something is wrong so best advice would be to see your Dr.

I live with constant back pain which was caused by a botched epidural so not much I can do about it. Sometimes it goes into spasm and the only thi g at this stage is the hospital for morphine so I can get moving again to help stop the spasm. When the pain starts to get unmanageable I used dive straight to the strong pain killers but now do physio to help stop it intensifying.

I wondered whether his technique needed adjustment. I do lots of yoga and it is great for easing stresses and strains that can add to existing problems. Maybe get some Alexander Technique treatment too, adjusting your posture to stop any aggravation etc. Id also get some jacuzzi time, as the jets and heat will soothe and relax muscles. Obviously quality massage will help, as others point out.

ive jsut had my second caudal epidural injection - suffered with back problems for years - my best concoction was 500 naproxen twice a day (take omepraxole to compensate any gut damage)- 60 ng codeine four times aday (dulcolax for the obvious) - topped up with paracetamol inbtween - tried amitryptiline and was hallucinating and just had a crazy few days after tramadol - (wont be taking those again) - so the back pain is still there- swimming on my tummy is a no no - lying belly down for any length of time is a no no - tens machine is good whilst its on but as soon as it stops the pain is back and overuse can affect the heart (apparently)- getting out of bed is a rollover and as for getting a pair of knickers on well - thats a laugh - could be so much worse - its lovely stood under the shower or lay back in the bath with his arms around me followed by a long massage - other than that - ive chucked down a few jds once and didnt feel anything for a few hours

Hard enough operating heavy machinery on the codine lol.

Would have to quit if I was constantly up on tramadol, I can't think straight on that stuff so wouldn't be able to function
