A Secret Hideaway In the caravan of love

I remember my mum & dad had one of these when I was a kid in the 70's.

Do you remember them.

It was just like renting a TV. You put coins in the slot at the back. It allowed you to watch for a number of hours, just like prepaid electric meters now.

Actually i just told a lie. My grandparents where the first in their village to own (have at all) a television. The reason was my grandad worked for the farmer and the wooden bit on the surround got slightly fire damaged so he gave it to my grandad. Apparently all the kids in the village used to crowd round after sunday school to watch the lone ranger

You can still get them. A friend of mine had one only a few years back. She was always asking me for change and it was a pain for her when it kept on running out. She gave it back in the end. She didn't get anything back as the interest was very high!

Although not coin operated, I remember we had a set that had a switch on it whereby you could change between 405 and 625 lines

There were no pre-sets on it, you had to move the dial round until you found the station.

Central

We dropped a lad home after work - invited in for coffee. Similar tv meter, but it was a form of savings system. They owned the tv, and a company came to empty the meter and gave them a proportion of the cash. Imagine running out of coins, missing your show, just because you need someone to help you 'save' some cash up!

Ours used to be rented from Robinson Rentals which went on to be (taken over by?) Granada. Think we also had coin television when we went on holiday too!

I can remember coin operated tellys on holiday, but ours were always rented from either radio rentals or DER...when I first bought a house, we rented a TV, think we bought our first in about 1990

Yes they are but it's more away of buying the tv rather then paying to view it
