A very "British" hobby?

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

I`m a railway enthusiast, like my classic cars, lorries and tractors and I`ve noticed that people from other ethnic backgrounds are seldom, if ever, seen to be enjoying the sort of hobbies I like.

Is there a stigma or something similar that stops the ordinary Asian taking up stamp collecting, the West Indian taking up gardening or the Afro -Carribean taking up plane spotting? Or are we Brits just plain strange?!

Indulging in such pastimes comes from have leisure time and some disposable income and/or space. It was the sort of thing the upper classes did (look at all those insect collections) and as people had more time filtered down.

There are collectors of all sorts of things for all ethnicities, I am sure. My grandfather used to be a numismatist and a philatelist. I don't know if he went train/plane spotting - that one is a bit odd to me.

Have you ever invited them, any one of them to join you and your mates in your activities and hobbies.

Really invited them not and not just sticking posters up about a forthcoming event?

Or alternatively, if you emigrated to let's say Ethiopa would you a) maintain your own hobbies and b) join in the local cultural hobbies.

Sheffield

This is actually a very interesting question.

Male of the couple here likes wrestling, especially indy stuff and going to shows, and finds that the audience there is mostly white guys.

The lady of the couple loves going to burlesque shows where the crowds can be up to 90% female. Certain hobbies and past times do seem to attract certain types.

Perhaps this is how stereotypes are born? It's certainly curious

Bet if you took up cricket *Bumpy* you'd find you were sharing a hobby. That's British enough ain't it?

I was trying to avoid sports but if we have to go in that direction, I`ll bring in horse riding. To my knowledge I`ve only seen one black show jumper on the telly. But yes, plenty of black and asian footballers, crickets, boxers, rugby players - all sports that have originated in the UK. But sports as opposed to a hobby!
