Hard flooring is nice in theory but it's not as comfortable and also constantly needs sweeping/moping instead of running a vacuum round quickly.

Depends.

If it's a high traffic area a hard floor is easier to keep clean. In a bedroom though, gimme a shagpile any day...

I prefer the look of hard but I have a condition in my feet and hard flooring makes it worse so carpets for me

Extra thick and confy soft carpet please, with an occasional island 'rug' of crushingly hard laminate, to keep the rest happy, when on their knees.
