Noisy neighbours,

Have had problems with a neighbour since he moved in, so to cut a long story short......

My noisy neighbour, over last 18 months, has had far too many compliants to count about noise from him, his flat and his guests after 11p.m......the last straw for me was 3.30a.m, when he & his d*unken friends came in slamming doors & screaming like banshees outside my bedroom.

Finally, after my last complaint to landlord, the neighbour has been given written notice to quit.

He has been creeping around like a mouse all day after he got the letter.

Absolute bliss!

Long may it last, or he won't! lol.

That is bad, I empathise with you - interrupted sleep is a real and genuine stress factor. Nobody minds a neighbour having a good time now and again but that sounds really bad. One reason we decided to move into rented accommodation.

Fortunately there is the Noise Pollution Law now.

try 4 years of living below an alcoholic who has his "friends" banging on his door at 3,4,5,6 in the morning and all day, loud music, stamping, verbal threats, violence etc

council "are investigating" which means keep writing reports.... i can fill a 3 page report in 2 days!! funnily enough there has been no more violence since they all found my rottie sunbathing

I so feel for people being bothered by the noise other (perhaps less considerate?) people make - and moving is not an option for everybody and also, why should you?

On a practical note - could you follow up with more calls and complaints? There is saying that the squeaky wheel gets the attention!

then you have my sympathy, things that really gets me, apart from him ruining my life........am trying to run my business so he impacts on that too.... he's pissed up so much that every taxi company here has blacklisted my address because the drivers object to him using taxi as toilet....he's fairly obviously unemployed, how can he afford 2 packets of cigs a day & all the alcohol? ( he goes out about 4 times a day for fresh supplys )

In exasperation I took the view that he had declared war lol didn't tell him that though, but as all we know there are things to do in war, as in, sort battle plan (env. health etc,) know enemy (he doesn't) have plenty of ammo

(he's supplied plenty with noise) be prepared for casualties (him lol) rebuild(my quite life) ....hope that doesn't sound awful but after 18 months of him well time for a change

mad isn't it, why should you be on tabs. just because of him? not only ruin your sleep and all attendant problems but shorten your life to boot!...after the verbal abuse & threats the other night have a very heavy rolling pin by my door....purely as protection of course....I have no intention of using it, however if I am half asleep & have d*unks threaten me & I happen to lift it......I believe sleep deprevation is a form of torture ?so and a court case would take all the history into account - not putting a smiley here lol

just refer them to your prior written complaints! then if they com back tell them suing them for negligence & allowing your torture to continue...bet they go running then, human rights (what a misnomer) goes both ways

Dont do that, thats called tit for tat and one cancels out the other, i know i work for a housing association. Evicting someone for ASB is a very long business, if he had rent arrears, NOSP - Notice Seeking Possession then apply to court for an IPO - Immediate Possession Order, isnt mandatory, the judge can decide if Housing Benefit claim has been put in, to suspend the IPO until housing benefit entitlement. Couple of months, maximum. ASB can take a year, what you need to do is write everything down, DO NOT RETALIATE as it makes matter worse for you, judges dont take kindly to people doing that, you could lose the case. Talk to him, if he ignores you, write that down too. Include his mates visiting, what time the noise started and finished, how loud ie shake the house or not, call in environmental health and get them to bring their noise equipment.

Be prepared though for a long wait, like i said, its not easy to evict someone for ASB, whats normal lifestyle to him is not yours, understand?

The key is always to talk. A long time ago I had neighbours did my head in, I got angry with them, no response, then something happened and I became friends with them. They agreed noise only at weekends after that, and I was always invited to their weekend only parties. Have to say, I went to some, great fun! Live and let live as far as you can. Buy old fashioned cardboard eggboxes to insulate your place if you can't!

Up North :-)

I came across someone on my travels a few weeks back who was having one hell of a time. His neighbors were the ones from hell so he pretended he was moving out and said he was moving some reprobates in aka "Onslow from keeping up appearances" style. It worked a trick but Geoff is a bit of a bright spark and doesn't miss a trick.

doesn't make sense does it really?, lost track of times I did ask nicely that noise be kept down, every time same empty promise it would, landlords told him about it as many times as I did so his loss & know he isn't in postion to have deposit for somewhere else, he's silly man to himself.

My neighbour had bought his house I think but I had noise equipment in and was eventually told that unless it is every night for over an hour it isnt classed as a nuisance! What a load of scrotum! I did ask for the bosses name and address then would see if that person thought I was a nuisance to them but would naturally be noisy for under an hour every night.

Now I am being very tongue in cheek but it did get my very bothered as had a newborn baby at that point and it went on for a year or so until we moved.

Interesting how it differs from rented to bought!??

we live in a terraced house we get our noise in stereo at times it seems like eac niebour is in competion with each other with constan loud music if thats what its called shouting banging dogs barking and as both sides own there properties there seems little that the authorities can or will do. cant remember the last time we had a decent nites kip only option left for us now is to move but we cant afford to do that.so dont be surprised to hear on the news soon that a middlesbrough man has been charged with shoving his neibours radios and dogs up there arses lol to the op glad to here you finaly got some help

Well a landlord has only to give 28 days written notice to seek repossession, without stating reason he has put reason on letter so the tenant can't go crying to council that he's being evicted unfairly & needs somewhere to live - they will probably laugh & say bye bye you made your self INTENTIONALLY homeless (sure half the reason is he wants a council place) have a surprise or two for him myself (that are all his own fault) before he goes

But after the 28 days if the tenant will not leave he as to apply to the court for a possession order, if the tenant still will not leave on the date given on this order the landlord then as to apply for an eviction notice, it is only then on the date on this notice can you get bailiffs, lock smiths and the police to actually remove you, so unfortunately you may have him a little longer than you expected.

"a women CAN knock on a random door and ask but men rarely can! i knocked on and politely asked him to turn the music down and he closed the door and turned it up"

You need to knock the door nicely with the back of an axe, when he opens the door you smile warmly and inform him that the lack of sleep is making you feel all spaced out, kinda like you are losing your grip on reality. Then ask him if he needs any firewood chopping, and fondly stroke the axe.

If he's still got the door open at that point, he's either incredibly stupid or has balls of steel. More likely he'll be as quiet as a mouse afterwards.

(You have to be prepared to put the odd panel through on his door, Jack Nicholson-style if he calls your bluff, but not to worry, what's the price of a new door? In any case, you'd only have to do one panel, before he phones the police...... you get a night in the cells, the police call it a domestic and let you out with a warning, he becomes very anxious not to piss you off again.Result!)
