It was the first time I had heard this rule but it's growing on me.

The rule is half your age plus 7 years.

Do you have a rule for younger?

I can't work out what the rule could be for older (except working out if you are half plus seven of the older person).

Take away seven from ones own age and then times by two? I'd end up with an 84 year old. Maybe the half your age plus seven rule doesn't work beyond a certain age.

I've never gone by any rule... if I like the guy, I like them. They have always been older than me tho... youngest i've ever been with was when I was 18 and he was 17. :O

I recently hit the big 40, and wondered a few times if I would still go for older men or swing to the younger guys.... last weekend a friend who is well into his 50's took me fishing, and yeah I would have jumped into bed with him given half a chance!! (but he is married so no no no no).

(legal) Age is just an issue for other people.

That's the rule for relationships more than sex, but the rule can apply with that too. However would people think a 47 year old woman who could have her pick of men. Look right with an 80 year old man? Chances are they will think the woman is a gold digger and/or the old bloke is disgusting. So the rule does have a cut off point somewhere. This "rule" is years old. Surprised some people haven't heard of it.

Why on earth should anyone - anyone, ever worry or try to calculate an age formula that tells them absolutely fuck all about a member on here!

Surely its about personality and compatibility in the 1st instance? Chatting on here, talking on the phone, a NSA meeting would be a natural progression?

The fact that the recent addition of the word 'only' to the 'looking for' age parameter means that a lot of people could be missing out on a hot meet by a month, maybe a day even?

Its a shame that the rider has been added as its not real, not a true reflection of a members condition or ability. The fact that contact of any/all description has restricted is ill conceived?

My rule is seventeen years either way, as that means one could legally be the other's parent. Don't know what I'll do if the age of consent is changed!

If I used that formula my lower age would be 31, I've set mine on here to 34 so not too bad. I prefer the company of younger men so my upper age is set to 44 even though I'm 49.

I lifted my filters not so long ago which was a mistake as one older men got shirty when I pointed out my age range. He was 20 years over my upper limit!

Yep that is the rule I follow and it's 27 for me which is pretty much spot on got me now. I'm far less flexible with my upper age limit as older guys just aren't my thing at the moment, so that's just a simple plus five years.

I'm more interested how this came up in a random train chat conversation?

I have never understood the fixation with age when it comes to meets, if I am going to meet my decision has always been based on whether the attraction, rapport and chemistry are great, maturity is a state of mind it is not dictated by a person's age.

However for some the age minimum and maximum are not set in stone there is just a limit to how low or how high people will go

To answer the question on how I ended up discussing this formula thing it came from a discussion where I said the above, without using the word fuck.

I usually have interesting train conversations with strangers. On the journey up to Newcastle the conversation I had with the women around me has given me material for at least two articles. I did tell them I would be writing about the conversation.

I've not heard of that half your age plus 7 before, but I think it's quite a good one. I have a limit on my profile, and sometimes I feel I should higher it, however, I think it depends a lot on the person you are talking too. If I went by that rule my age limit would be no body under 30 and that makes me feel very old!!!

My last long term partner was 23 years younger than me and I regularly had sex with a neighbour who is 25 - and she initiated it! I don't see a problem. Both these ladies have houses, jobs, children and cars! If they like an older guy I'm not going to complain.

Back in the day(& I mean a Fair way back) it was not unusual for a 18/19 year old girl to be married off to a man more than 20 years her senior. The rationale being he had been successful etc and would make a good father/provider

Maybe for every decade apart it is you had 7. Example 80 year old bloke, 47 year old woman. Doesn't sound right. 80 year old bloke and 68 year old woman sounds a lot better.

Maths is 80 divided 2 is 40, which is 4 decades. 4 takes 7 is 28. Add that to 40 and that's 68. Sounds much better.

Half of 93 is 46.5 add 7 is 53.5

Half of 94 is 47 add 7 is 54

I am allowed to go with 40 year olds and 20 year olds going by this rule.
