Half Term rant

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I can't believe its gonna be half term again soon already. I think its ridiculous as that means schools have only been open for 4 weeks.

What's also ridiculous is that half the schools in the UK close 1 week and the rest close on the next week which turns what's supposed to be a week half term into 2 weeks. I think all schools should close on the same week not like how it is now as the school system is now a complete joke.

When it comes to working in a public place like in a cinema like I do, it can be quite dreading when half term comes round or even the summer holidays (which I call the 6 weeks of Hell) which always make me wish these long weeks would go very quickly.

Luckily the weather can be an advantage like if its a very warm and sunny day, families would likely go to other places like Blackpool for the day which can make it less stressful at work.

With that rant over, does anyone else have similar thoughts about how half term and school holidays are done these days?

Do you have children?

To be honest school holidays don't bother me one bit... But with some children taking exams this week I expect half term will feel like a relief to them.

And isn't good that they are visiting your cinema in the holidays?

Surely them coming to watch films and eating popcorn ect keep you in a job.

I don't have children to be honest.

Yes the holidays can be busy at work which means more money for me but there are times when there can be less staff on to help clean up the messy screens which can be quite stressful.

She likes going off at the holidays for a week here and there.

Yes time can fly by when busy especially on a morning shift.

It can be a bit boring when its a very quiet day but its much better than a busy, stressful one to be honest.

Brighton - even Hove!

If I worked in a cinema I'd provide 100's of half term specials and get as many kids in as possible to up the profit margin.

Half term is good for the kids. Without being rude - the half term holiday isn't about you. It's about the kids. They need to have a little break and enjoy themselves a bit. And of course they will go cinemas and so forth because that's what they like.

I love half term anf the school holidays. All my nieces and nephews are off - i can finally spend some time with them and take them out. Make some memories for years to come when they all grow up and you won't have chances like this.

...if you don't like what you're doing. Then change it. You're not a tree just stuck in one place. Go try something different.

I've been working there for 8 and a half years and have tolerated half term and school holidays so far. I remember when half term holidays last for just 1 week and now they last for 2 weeks which like I said earlier is ridiculous.

I love that the half terms are split it means I get two weeks of better commute, means all my project staff don't want the same week off and to be fair this term always feels short due to Easter & all the public holidays.

Teachers work hard, even as a non Child having person I see they need regular breaks.

One of our kids is doing her A Level exams and the other is sitting 16 GCSE exams in a very short space of time at the moment.

They will be very grateful of this break.

We might need a longer break when they finish school and sixth form for good very shortly though!

Perhaps we should lock our children in the understairs cupboard for the duration of the holidays just so as they don't annoy or offend anyone by being children?

A little mess? After working there so long, there have been times where there is popcorn practically strewn everywhere in a busy screen. I'm not saying that I don't like kids but when it comes to popcorn, its like cleaning a monkeys pen in a zoo.

I also think that half term holidays should be restored to 1 week instead of 2.

OP is the cinema in different education authorities as most schools in the same area have the same half term. Think you must be on a border between two different im ones for it to be having such an impact.

Schools still only have one week off at half term it's just that different authorities have different weeks. It makes it easier for working parents and businesses to plan.

Think you'll just have to suck it up, grin & bear it.

I'd like a rant about miserable workers in the cinema. Don't remember ever seeing a cheerful one. Wouldn't kill them to smile as they take the exorbitant amounts of money charged for tickets and refreshments. If we,as the consumers handing over huge amounts of money can smile, then why can't they?

You do have a fair point there. I think something that I will have to understand when I have children one day.

Half term is still only one week , not two. It's always been staggered- I live on the border of a county & the neighbouring two have another week unti they break up. It's been like that for years.

Let's hope the sun shines so the kids don't fancy the cinema! It's a complete rip off anyway.

"I can't believe its gonna be half term again soon already.

With that rant over, does anyone else have similar thoughts about how half term and school holidays are done these days?"

Seaside resorts?? Don't you send them to my seaside resort. Pesky kids taking up space on our beach eating all our ice cream and building sandcastles. Heaven forbid they should enjoy the sun, sea and sand during their half term

I hope it rains every day so they're all crowded in your cinema eating popcorn "

And relax and stop blaming the schools system because you get busy....blame your employer for not providing more cover at peak times...surely easier to do than re hash the school system to save some spilled popcorn no? "Really not sure why your ranting then OP? Is it because the kiddies make a little bit of a mess and that means that you have to work?

A little mess? After working there so long, there have been times where there is popcorn practically strewn everywhere in a busy screen. I'm not saying that I don't like kids but when it comes to popcorn, its like cleaning a monkeys pen in a zoo.

I also think that half term holidays should be restored to 1 week instead of 2."

Half term holidays are 1 week, not 2 in normal state schools.

End of terms are 2 weeks with end of academic year being between 5 & 6 weeks.

I live in Essex and they have changed our Easter Holidays I feel for the better. All the children will have Easter off as a bank holiday, and if it falls within the two weeks holiday then fine, if not they will have the two weeks at the same time every year. It means then that people with child care know what they are doing in stead of it moving around all the time.

When I was younger the may day bank holiday was celebrated with school fetes and Maypole dancing and a May Queen, but sadly this dosn't seem to happen anymore and really should be knocked on the head.

Then we would only have the old witsum holiday as half term.

As for you moaning about it being hard work in the six weeks holiday at the very least you are getting paid for it where as some of us have to find the money to entertain our children .... Sorry that's my school holiday rant over ... Ruby

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

OP, it can't be that long since you had the benefit of half term as a child/young person.

When they are held at the same time for all schools people complain that everything is too expensive, especially going away. If they are staggered those with children in different schools have problems.

They have come around quickly this time because it was a late Easter. I think you get seven weeks of not having to do as much work before they get let loose for the summer holidays.

I'd be glad of full screens and knowing the busy period and stress is short term. Some people work with busy and stress every day.

and then its only 7 weeks until summer break

but I don't see how moving the holidays around would make it any less stressful for the OP as it sounds like he hates his job anyway, so however many or few kids there are or how hot and sunny it is or isn't my guess is he will always have something to moan about...if you don't like kids go and get an office job..simples

It's the cinema's fault if you're understaffed, not the children.

I used to work in a cinema and hated it due to the rudeness of customers and the poor management. I got another job and didn't look back.

My current job relies on it being busy in school hols and the summer. The kids are usually well behaved.

If you don't like your situation then change it.

Local authorities set the schools holidays and sometimes different authorities will have different leave dates. It's a good thing it means the road are quieter for longer and holidays and trips aren't such a ridiculous price hike for half term.

This is a silly term - being just 4 weeks. And it is irritating that different schools and authorities vary holiday dates, especially if you have children at schools in different authorities.

It's not going to get better though - schools being able to set their own holiday dates will make it even more of a confuddle.

I don't have any sympathy for employees moaning about extra customers though.

Without reading the whole thread..

I live in one town and work in a neighbouring town which seem to have different school holidays.

I dont have kids and would avoid certain places / activities if I knew it was school hols as they are undoubtedly busier. But I do find it quite difficult keeping up with when school hols are.

So yea I think in some ways it would be easier if all local schools had the same weeks as holidays..but then that might cause problems for diferent industries with parents all wanting the same time off work for childcare needs etc.

Someone somewhere decided having the holidays at different times for diferent schools decided that was the best way.

Unlucky for some..better for others..such is life

We were watching a good program last night called Watermen, A dirty business, that looks like a good job and they always look cheerful too.

They say they get used to the smell.

"

That's the school system for you. Its a complete joke in my opinion.

So the whole school system is a joke because you have to clear up popcorn, which you are paid for. "

Just about sums this all up.

"Did that not cross your mind when you took the job??

I've been working there for 8 and a half years and have tolerated half term and school holidays so far. I remember when half term holidays last for just 1 week and now they last for 2 weeks which like I said earlier is ridiculous.

Can you tell us why staggering half term holiday is ridiculous?

It gets ridiculous when we're low on staff and there are messy screens."

never mind eh you have a job be grateful of those pesky kids who keep you in a job. Pretty sure there are plenty of people who would appreciate a job but are unable to get one. Failing that leave! I can't wait for half term it's quiet at school then. I can get on top of marking, preparing and scheduling exams, attending meetings, going in training courses, and lesson planning. Not to mention preparing for three open days, careers fair, meeting the new learners for September and my one whole day off! I do it because I actually enjoy my vocation and job. Enjoy your days work

And some people don't want them, have never had them, but still have to put up with them and their lazy-arsed parents ignoring them when they misbehave. Children are the future my arse, they're not my future, except to do the work I pay them for - this is the present, and it belongs to ME!

If they wipe my arse, it will be because I'm paying them to do it - either directly for high-cost nursing-home care, or indirectly through taxes and NHS treatment. Besides, some enterprising adult will have invented an auto-arse washer by then

People who can't physically have their own children can always adopt. Those who don't want them still have to pay for them.

Bahhhhh humbug!!! I'm guessing you work in one of our local cinemas? OP... I'm gunna hunt you down and throw rotten eggs at you lol....

I love my lil guy being off school... Having grown up kiddies... And being fortunate enough to have a five yr old too... Makes you realise how quickly they grow! And how you need to relish the younger years... School hols, in the sun priceless!

Quite possibly, but not to the ridiculous extent children, and children's causes, have money thrown at them these days. Even though my parents were quite well-off, I didn't insist on, and wouldn't have got, the latest designer label clothing, or the latest video games or smart-phones, and "conditions" like ADHD didn't exist to provide poorly trained "therapists" with a good income for doing sod-all!

Just want to put this rant thread to rest by apologising for causing such a big fuss due to my rant about the holidays. I must also apologising for causing any cause offence to those here who have children with this rant.

It was wrong to complain about something that is out of my control. I do like the job I'm in (most of the time lol) and no I don't hate kids at all.

From reading many of your replies on this, it has given me insight on why school holidays are important. I agree that it is important for kids to be kids by giving them the time off they need and also agree that having schools closed on different weeks makes it a lot easier for families and businesses. This is something that I will have to keep in mind in future.

From now, I will remember to think before I say anything so lets put this all behind us and move on shall we.

not sure why you are apologising but if you feel the need, so be it.

there are many very well behaved children & they will be a delight. Alongside them, there will be some of the worst behaved spoiling the fun of many attending the cinema.

That will be down to shocking parenting.

Yeah, you're right there. There are definitely well behaved kids that came to the cinema over the years but I have seen some worst behaved ones too sometimes damaging some of the advertising displays.
