Privatised children's services.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

The Guardian reports today that the DfE have proposed that children's services could be outsourced to private companies such as G4S and Serco. Even Gove's own expert from whom he commissioned a report on child protection, published in 2011, thinks it is a bad idea.

Hopefully, it stays on the drawing board. I cannot imagine a more appalling scenario for vulnerable children.

The present government do not care about quality of service.

Its just a case of getting it off the books, so that public spending falls.

The countries debt will drop one way or another,or they will appear to have failed.

If it means privatising everything and selling anything of value,then thats exactly what will happen.

Personally, i'm against such a privatisation of this "service".

However, it is true to say there are many in the current system who evidently do not care about the level of service they provide to the vulnerable children. It would be a better campaign to get rid of them first.

Our daughter works in this sort of department, and the savings they are having to make have a very serious knock on effect at the moment, and it's getting worse all the time. It's like she says money comes before the children. Very, very sad.

I think failing services should be considered for privatisation but those that are not should be left well alone.

Won't get any better in a private setting as they're more profit orientated

The department she works is having to cut 12 jobs, but their workload will be the same.

The trouble is if something happens, people always want someone to blame, and being so overworked it is an accident just waiting to happen. Not a case of if, but when!!

No way this should be privatised.

I do a lot of work with our local Child Services most of them are excellent, but overworked due to loss of funding. I'm beginning to think the government wants council childrens services to fail so they have an excuse to privatise.

Imagine a company considering profits whilst trying to decide how best to support vulnerable children? Conflict of interest there I think.

Even Gove's own expert is against it.

Total disregard for children's welfare aside I have other real concerns, having worked in social care myself I know how grossly underfunded it is so staff turnover is very high because the staff are so stretched, the case-load is dizzying and the job of a social worker is pretty much totally thankless, the particular toll child protection takes on those who work in it means there is an even higher staff turnover and staff are hard to replace. And some child protection jobs limit the number of years you are allowed to work in the area, because of what you are exposed to.

I don't see staff retention improving once this is handed over to a profit making organisation because the professionals who work in social care probably don't want to work within private entities on the whole, many will be totally opposed to it.

Secondly, how is a private company expecting to turn a profit from this? They will want to turn a profit of course there's bound to be shareholder interest too, but I cannot see how they'll make money? So where do they choose to bite to make some money out of other peoples misfortune?

I dread to think what the answer to that question would be but it's a horrible idea, I hope and pray it never comes to fruition for the sake of our vulnerable children.
