It's a fallacy to be told we enjoy freedom of speech in this country due to PC lobby.

we have more freedom than most countries to express our views.....just as long as we don't upset anyone

I think most of us do, in private conversations, but we wouldn't still be free to walk the streets if all we said was printed and displayed to the masses

It depends on the circumstances for me. I wouldn't purposely go out to upset someone, but if they asked for me to be honest with them, I will be honest, to the point of being very blunt.

i wont go out of my way to insult someone but if they need telling the truth then so be it, i hate people talking behind other peoples backs and i disagree 100% with it, if your not strong enough to tell them face2face then they shouldn't say it all all imo

People insult others every minute of every day in private conversations. Some people do it as a natural trait. Others have to work at it...

People have fought and died for the right of free speech, and I'm a great believer in saying what I want and how I want when ever I want. The PC brigade have the right as I do to thier point of view, however I'm sure someone will point out how wrong I am to use this hard earned right!!

Good post.

Yes i do beleive we should be free to speak and say what we want. If others don't like it, think it's a pile of tosh, get offended by it, so what?

That said, there is a hell of a lot of PC'ness about and it is now often illegal to sepak on race, sex, religion, even agism ?

So, to all you vertically challenged people out there "You short bastards"

Joke alert, joke alert!

So would it be OK for me to tell everyone if I thought you were a paedophile or wife beater or a granny mugger just because I want to tell 'um and if you get offended then "so what"

With the freedom to speak your mind comes the responsibility to consider the effect of those words you are about to speak/print etc.

This is why we have laws about inciting racial hatred for example.

'Freedom of speach' is NOT a license to deliberately offend.

Thing is though, different views can be seen as insults by some people.

Some others are always on the lookout from a PC viewpoint ready to jump in and tell us where we are "out of order"

It has to be expected in an open forum, but as individuals we don't have to accept it.

It's when we voice our opinions to other peoples views that we can be seen as bigots, even though from our own stand point our views are valid.

I like this way of putting it - I agree with you. I am a passionate believer in Freedom of Speech and will do anything possible to stop others from being bullied into submission. However, HOWEVER, it is best to speak out when you are not angry yourself so that the message you are sending comes out as intended and not offensive.

Well I agree mostly with _etitesara. The right to speak does get confused with the right to be rude or offensive.

There is an enormity of difference between The right to gather information. The right to disseminate ideas and being nothing more than a tactless twat.

Which is what I could be called if ever I gave my honest ( but needless ) opinion of some of the trashy threads on here.

There's bloody YARDS of bandwith. Loads of room to twittering and tons for seriarses.

I don't expect everyone to be me. Some on here bleat cos not everyone else is them.

I enjoy the variety - all of it.

I've never felt the need to insult. it's a form of demonstrating an insecurity in ones self.

positive or negative criticism is a different matter, but it should always be constructive.

with that in mind, i speak as i believe and respect it's one persons opinion not everyones

"It's not about expessing your self the Q was re freedom of speech "

And it was/ is a really great question - I guess in deciding whether to speak out or not, it depends on multitude of factors, eg the situation. Also lot depends on the balancing of one's beliefs with one's personality. It may also be a question of confidence for some people?

I would fight for someones freedom of speech.. and would defend the right of someone to say what they feel...

HOWEVER, they also have to understand that I reserve the right to react to there freedom of speech any way I feel fit.....

with freedom of speech comes a responsibility to use it wisely.....

and perhaps the consideration, forethought of the potential effect of what one says to another person?
