Job reference

Is an previous employer obliged to give one, if one has an unblemished work history with them, nil sickness absence etc ?

By not giving one, it leaves a negative impression though. My last line manager is being spiteful, I brought a lot of work (not my role, they were supposed to give me work in theory), she is not happy that I have left, and won't give me a reference. Just wondered if it was worth taking it higher, obviously I can't. Thanks for replies.

Go direct to your hr team.. They will confirm service, attendance etc.

How big is the organisation you worked for?

I had this problem somewhere I worked. I just put the name of the company and the HR departments phone number.

It does not have to be personal they just have to confirm you worked for them.

Ooooh, right. Will try that. It is a principal more than anything. Have had glowing references from senior work colleagues, new employer is happy to start me without, but am not happy with the negative implication it leaves on me.

Not true. They have to give an accurate and fair reference, if that includes bad points then they have to be able to back them up.

Pointless exercise if you're only allowed to mention the good things!

Best bet HR department and ask is there any reason why you are not getting one.

I've always found it useful to ask my gaffer for a personal reference whenever I've moved on. These have proven to be pretty beneficial

This is a huge agency, my 'consultant' won't give me a reference.
