"So under pressure from friends and to raise some money in remembrance of a friend who died a year ago, I have agreed to do a half marathon. The furthest I have ever run without stopping is about 4k. I have 6 weeks so has anyone got any tips to help me get around without having to walk most of it??" Dont do it, pass on this year and train for one next year,

I am going to be the oldest of the group and just want to avoid making too much of an arse of myself!

"No walking that's to easy run mate make the effort" If you want me to run the whole way I really might need to think about a will and funeral arrangements! I will certainly need some massage help in the Hackney area afterwards!! So the helpful advice so far, get some decent plimpsoles, take it easy, set some targets and slowly build up. Sounding like a plan...

Finding a pace to run at that suits you. For that if you can or have an ipod that you listen to music at that beat will help distract you and add distance to your training runs. End of each weeks training add 50% more to that run to push your endurance level. If you can train up to 2 thirds distance you should complete it on the day. But main thin is to set mini goals for yourself..... and the best of luck We have nearly 20 people entered this year so not an option. Don't expect too much of your first effort 2nd .. Get a training program going, six weeks is long enough. I use and recommend Adidas MiCoach. There are schedules for beginners to experts 3rd ... Enjoy it

"its in memory of your friend - walking it doesnt matter xxx " It is the competitor in me, if I sign up for something I want to do well. But in this case I suspect the mind will be willing but the body maybe found wanting!

"Unless you have a lot of transferable cardio fitness you are going to struggle. Even if you do you are going to struggle massively. From zero to half in 6 weeks isn't impossible but it won't be pretty on the day. Some of the advice on here will get you injured if you follow it. The best advice is not to do it. If you must lots of slow runs and run/walks to get used to being on your feet is my tip" Thanks, I recognise it isn't going to be pretty. Am working on the basis I should be able to walk it in 3 hours, so anything better than that should be an achievement. Will be looking to raise some money so am sure people will expect me to put some effort in.
