One of the few elitist sports still left.

Mind you, i am not doubting the skill it takes to trot those equines.

Well, Harry Meade is my new hero - what a story!!!

And I'm sorry, that bloody Italian has ruined the course and made it ridiculously undulating and twisty like some horrid Olympic track rammed into a small space, who the heck is he anyway!!! Grrrr!

I think the course was great!! It showed who actually gets their horses fit enough to compeate properly! That course was like it used to be before health and safety got totally in the way!!

Shame Nicola Wilson retired that little mare was ace!!

The course asked some difficult questions in difficult weather conditions,

It's a shame that so many retired or were eliminated!

Well done to ollie on a 2nd place!

Back in the old days when there was still a steeplechase course to do before the x-country the horses were no less fit, but Badminton above all other events required supreme boldness from the horses.

When this amount of horses are caught out and end up actually falling I maintain it is not a fair test. The object always used to be to get most of them home safe, but scare the more novice riders and more timid horses into taking the slow routes!

I was just so surprised how many were tipped off!!

And not one clear round, those horses were tired... It will be intresteing to see how people up their game! I think it will be good for the sport

And I'd quite like to steal Billy Beware horse for Rio perhaps????

It's possible in some cases lower down the ranks, but not for people like Toddy. Too much short undulation right on top of fences and tight turns are too tiring - much moreso than galloping on over steeplechase fences.

That double of two logs that caught so many out - can you imagine that with a third log at the bottom? That would have been evil!! And those ridiculous corners in Huntsmans!

Yes, the horses have to be fit enough, and yes the riders have to present them right BUT given that if the combination of fence and terrain make it too hard for the HORSES to work out and produce what's required - then you get too many falls, and that's when I call it unfair.

No I believe it's the largest single attendance for any UK sporting event still? And millions watch on TV, most horse people of all discipline, and there are millions in the UK.

10th largest in the world at 200K according to List of sporting venues with a highest attendance of 100,000 or more on Wikipedia, Le Mans tops the list at 235k and Indianapolis at 225K.

That's pretty big!!

Yes, but we don't want people having to showjump round the cross country course at Badminton! Anywhere but Badminton please!!!!

Anyway I think the horses were more mentally exhausted from trying to work out too many unfair questions myself, and there were some VERY experienced horses who were shaken by them. If you trick a horse into making a mistake by an unfair question you can seriously damage his confidence, and I believe we saw that several times with even world class combinations. They did everything they could and it still went wrong and that shook them - enough that in several cases they lost so much concentration/confidence they had a fall at the NEXT fence.

And without all those pins breaking there may indeed have been several serious injuries to horse and rider. That's one place where I agree 100% that health and safety is an improvement at least.

Anyway, the debate will continue - it will be interesting to read all the debriefs in the equestrian media for sure.

I don't think it was a question of the horses being unfit, the course did ask difficult questions of the riders and the horses, no one came in on or even under the allowed time.

I suspect that The London marathon crowds far exceeds the numbers at Badminton.

As for TV coverage, BBC have so little sport that if there were really millions watching it wouldn't just be on the red button.
