has our justice system gone mad

what do you think? When your here of Michael Wheatley or skull cracker as he is also known, is serving 13 life sentences and the crazy fools in charge think yes it's a good idea to let him out for the day. WTF people! Surely if he is serving that amount of time he should not be let out as he is a dangerous person. I'm getting a little bit angrier every time one of these stories comes out. Should a person who is convicted complete their time? I think they should!

I don't think they take the decision to let him out lightly but trying to get him rehabilitated to 'outside life' after many years is a tough one.

Many, many do well back on the outside, we only hear the bad news stories.

In the 24 hour news society means we only ever hear of the things that good wrong in rehab. Rarely do we hear about long term prisoners who are successfully rehabilitated

When someone has come close to serving their time they need rehabilitating back into society, otherwise they'll struggle to cope on the outside and become a menace to society once more.

Did you know the government are splitting the probation service 25/75% with the 75% open to bidders such as G4S, the shambles that couldn't manage the Olympics and various other companies with no experience of managing offenders?

It's going to get a damn site worse before it gets any better.

A sensible society would have terminated a man with such a deserved nickname. The ultra liberals who appear to run us are damaging this country beyond recognition. This is the age of the weak and feeble minded! And it's catching fast.

Agreed and with prisons bulging st the seams it's only a matter of time before sentences are reduced

I think rehabilitation is vital but how can you expect long term prisoners who've had 3 square meals, a roof and bed to sleep in without work for so long to come out and be adjusted. Prions should put all prisoners to work to show them a life of discipline and routine do when they come out they understand that contributing to society is the only way

Its also a society that is breeding lazy people.

People who would rather steal and beg than work a few hours every monday to friday.

I started with not one penny twenty years ago.i had to go self employed cause no one had a decent job for me ..ive worked 15 hours a day every day....

I get what i deserve....

Nice house nice car...

These scull crackers etc need to roll their sleeves up and do some hard graft.

Instead they ruin other peoples lifes...

Throw the keys away and forget about the lazy people....

Rehabilitation does work. I work within probation and some people do come out of prison and never commit crime again. We just don't hear about them. It doesn't sell papers to hear that Joe Bloggs did 5 years inside and now has his own business and employs other ex offenders to give them a break.

I think 1of the main problems with the justice system is that prisons are seen as punishments, which they should be, but little effort is made in prisons to rehabilitate. Most of the effort is made when and if they come out on probation. Which unfortunately for some is too little, too late.

Many prisons have work and education programmes and prisoners are expected to be involved. Its not the same as dealing with all the everyday pressures of running a home and dealing with Jo Public. Prisons are institutions and those spending extended sentences in them become institutionalised. Life on the outside changes while they are away and they need help to adjust.

The man in question was misjudged by those whe deemed him fit for open prison.

Now he is back in custody. Lets hope he stays there.

And yet the death penalty was repealled in the 1960s, so we have been weak for over 60 years.

Most intelligent people would accept that state killing of individuals for non " capital " offences would result in hundreds of cruel inhumane deaths and would be barbaric.

i had this same conversation with my mother in law, who is a retired prison governed. Apparently all lifers coming towards the end of their reccomended sentence have to go to open prison, as apparently it is part of the process to reaclimatise them to the outside world.... It seems bloody ridiculous to me too, but apparently that's what the rule book says...

I don't think anyone given 13 life sentences should be released. Life should mean life.

I don't understand sentencing someone to, say, 8 years and them only serving part of that. I don't care how well they behave inside, their sentence was for what they've done and they should serve the entire term. Behaving well in prison doesn't change what someone did.

I can't get my head around letting someone with 13 life sentences out.

The problem here is that the government can't understand the difference between efficiency and effectiveness. Nor cost benefit analysis.
