Do you sometimes think that you may say something which ends up coming out in a way which you did not intend? And then you sit back and think 'why on earth did i say it like that?'.

I'd be honest. I'm terrible like that. I always say things which come out the wrong way. But i don't mean it that way (and it doesn't click in my head that quick that it sounds like that) but by that time it's too late to apologise, as the damage is done.

What can someone do in that situation? Is there any repair to the friendship?

Yes, especially typing things on here sometimes. I think in Welsh and it sounds ok in my head but by the time I've translated it, typed it out and read it back later it looks a bit wrong lol

Yes I do it allll the time, never mean malice or hurtful, saying what I sometimes think but sometimes not tactful.

My friends and family know how I am and take no notice.

But to someone new it can be hard, explain to them how you are, and how you meant it in a tactful way.

i just say whats in my head and sometimes think after that dosnt sound good, plus people that come from diffrent parts of the country say diffrent things and can misunderstand what your trying to say. x

What if the chance to clarify what you have said no longer exists?

...just have to deal with it i suppose isn't it? I just don't want/like people thinking i'm a right prick or a proper knob for what i've said - especially if i didn't intend it like that.

I think everyone does at times say something that in hindsight sounds wrong or a bit awfull without really meaning to.....

I find if someone is friend enough and and an honest explanation is given alongside a suitably sheepish look then things have a way of sorting themselves out.....

Ok! If someone says something to me that's wrong, I find myself looking at the person they are, to see if they meant it.

And anyone that knows you well enough will know you didn't mean it.

My friend declared she was getting married to her girlfriend x

I sent her text the next day saying my sister laughed when I told her x

Was the wrong word cos I meant smiled/happy x

Well she took mega umbrage and that's that x

27 yrs we were friends x

Found out later she told her friends that I didn't like it that she was now gay x

Talk about projection x

But is it repairable x nah

If the chance to clarify is no longer possible then there's nothing much you can do about it unfortunately. Having said that, depending on what you said and the circumstances obviously, then the other person is loosing out by not giving you a chance to explain.

Yeah, i've lost a lot of people who i thought were really close to me because of what i may have said. It's strange that - you wouldn't think that they'd think of you like that after knowing you for so many years/months or even weeks.

..ah well. Shit happens. Hopefully not literally.

As you know, I too may also have totally put my foot in it. Again. Since I have a habit of speaking first and then thinking later. Plus sarcasm and tongue-in-cheekness doesn't always come across in the written form. I may not have put my foot in it though, which would mean I am fretting needlessly. And asking if I have would only draw attention if I haven't. It's the Fab equivalent of Scroedinger's cat conundrum. Aargh!

They may just be in a mood and come back round?

Unfortunately, yes. by the time you get to my age [old] you will have had numerous friends come and go in your life.

True close friends however will always be there and if you only find only a small handful of those in your lifetime then you're still very lucky.

You have to live with your words so think before uttering them. You can apologise though if you feel you were wrong.

I have done it a couple of times on here, so I feel for you Pops. I am normally very careful about what I write. However on occasion I find what I have written is expressed poorly and inevitability easily misunderstood. I find it happens when I am responding quickly and not giving what I am typing enough thought.

I have found it takes a lot of humility and apologising to make amends. On occasion the horse has already bolted and no matter how much I try to apologise it is sadly too late. Hopefully I've learned my lesson now, but we're only human.

I do it all the time. My sense of humour just doesn't translate well in writing. Or my sense of humour is crap. Probably both.

I apologise... but I usually end up digging myself in even deeper. Ho hum.

I tend to say it as it is and sometimes yes words just fall out of my mouth, I do sometimes sit back and think... I could have said it in a completely different way. I may have upset a few people in my life, but those that know me don't seem to have taken any offence in what I may have said to them!
