Long haul flights

So, I'm going away next week and I have a long flight plus a change an hour into the flight... I expect to be bored and nervous I hate flying!

What would you wear on a long haul flight? Smart casual, comforts or your general daily attire?

Comforts, but have something suitable for where your going in your carry on, to allow for any big change in temp from here to where your going?

Where are you off to?

I'm a nervous flier, too.

I always dress smartly but causally for air-travel, where the majority of the plane look like they're going to the beach. I'm tall so it's an unduly cruel way to transport me.

Wear what you are comfortable in ! Nothing worse than feeling uncomfy on a long flight . Lucky you though - have fun

It's just to New York, but my friend managed to book an 11 hour flight! I could kick him!

Luckily I'm 5'4..exactly the height you should be if you don't want a full body cramp in transport.

Yep we're changing in Ireland so I guess it's kore 9 hours on the flight but 11 hours altogether not including customs etc

If you have an iPad or tablet, download your fav tv programmes from iplayer, a movie or two on iTunes and a good book. That should keep you going.

Also be prepared for a very long wait at customs when you get there, get some bottled water to drink as you queue up waiting to be grilled. Make sure you fill in the information form they give you on the plane very accurately!

Have fun. We love NYC ....very envious

We too love New York. As someone has already said be prepared to wait at customs. It can take 3 hours or more. Have fun and go to century 21 near where the twin towers used to be. Fab bargains to be had. Enjoy.

Thanks for the tip, I will be there at the end of May staying in Hilton. Looking for some fun whilst I'm out there as well.

Nice sure what the NYC swinging scene is like. From what I hear its very quiet.

We never bother with the swinging scene there to busy enjoying the sights.

Definitely comfortable clothes are the way to go.

Whatever you wear get comfortable noise cancelling headphones. They make it all more tollerable.

No idea what the NY swinging scene is like

Join the Hilton Honours scheme online. It gets you perks such as room upgrades and breakfast at some hotels. Always be polite and happy when speaking to the staff and concierge and they will bend over backwards to help you.

If you want to see NYC from the perspective of a local, google Big Apple Greeters and try to book one of their volunteers to show you around. They are brilliant and it is completely free, although they depend on donations to keep going.

Download an app called Magic Jack, which allows you to use Data Services such as Hotel WiFi to make calls to any US number. I think that if you are a UK Three Mobile customer you can use your call and data allowance in USA too.

Want to know anything else feel free to message us.

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

Def go for comfort. And layers as I usually find its either freezing cold or boiling hot on the plane.

If youre flying via Dublin then you may be clearing Immigration in Dubin which saves loads of time when you get to NY.

Might be worth checking the times on your ticket again too - its never taken me 9 hrs to get to NY.

Have you been to NY before?

You can get a shuttle from JFK to where you want to go (it's like a big taxi) as long as it is in NY and you just pay a fare (you aren't allowed to tip them).

Also you need to have the name and address of where you are staying to be let through the other side. When I went I didn't have anywhere booked (decided to wing it and decide while I was there) and I had to blag the official to give me the name and address of somewhere just to write it down.

Do not wear a crash helmet and knee / elbow pads. Other than that stick to smart casual with shoes you can slip off once in your seat.

I would be a bit concerned about the 9 hours from Ireland to New York, that's twice normal time. Are you in a peddle powered plane?

I was going to say this... I know you can do this for shannon but I am not sure if you can do this for Dublin, but is worth checking.....

Also, just out of interest which "New York" airport you flying in to... Newark or JFK?

I have flown back and for a bit and when people think NYC, they always look at just JFK... but its almost as easy and as quick getting into NYC from newark then it is from JFK via public transport

but I have done all the "Via's" in my time to get cheapies.... Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid, Iceland.....

as for NYC swinging scene.. there is one but is primarily couples only and very expensive.....

quickest way to jfk now is to use to "Airtrain" into Jamaica,Queens (the bit next to my bit.... Queens Village and flushing representiing!!! lol) and just take the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) into manhattan and Brooklyn

Cardiff/London - Haggerston

Hiya …

Not an expert for NYC but do a lot of long haul to Australia, Far and Middle East. Sometimes on 13 hour sectors in one go.

I simply pack a comfortable light pyjamas (t-shirt/cotton pants) in my hand luggage. I get changed into these after the meal service around 1.5-2hours in to the flight, this keeps me comfortable for the movie and the sleep. I'll keep them on until after the last meal service which usually ends an hour before landing.

For entertainment, todays airlines are usually full of entertainment systems. Latest movies (flights are catchup time for me) and loads of documentaries to keep on busy. Have a look at their website to find out move about your particular flight be sure to know the type of aircraft you are flying on to know what entertainment system they are carrying. Another way to find out is to look for airline reviews in google, I am sure there are many for a busy sector such as the Atlantic one.

Hope it helps and enjoy your trip….

If you are lucky …. well the flight computer can seat you next to some very nice people that can make the flight much much much much more enjoyable, take it from me time does fly when it does

Something comfy and layers, leggings, tshirt, jumper and thick socks so you can take your shoes off on the plane.

I get really bored on long haul flights, its a shame you're not flying direct, I always fly direct with BA and I've always found it a good service.

I always jump in a taxi at JFK as I can't be bothered with the shuttle. I use taxis all the time if its too far to walk, I'm getting really good at hailing them in the middle of the street now.

If its your first time id plan what you want to see and do the sights in areas, its no good wanting to see central park and the statue of liberty In the same day as you'll get very tired. If your going to central park walk up 5th avenue to spend your money in the shops there

Has your friend booked allocated seating ?

If he hasn't ask him to do so.

If you are flying Aer Lingus, they use the Airbus A330-300 series on the DUB-JFK route in a 2-4-2 configuration.

If at all possible, avoid being in the 4 bit in the middle.

Avoid seats in rows 29,30,31,44,45,46 in general and in 47 & 48 particularly.

Those seats have restricted recline, are near to the toilets and have restricted legroom due the entertainment boxes being stored under the seats.

The good news is the plane should have seat back entertainment throughout with audio and visual on demand to keep you occupied.

Have a wild time in NYC : awesome place & more than just a little jealous right now

the moon? It's usually 6-8 hours depending on tail winds ( tends to be shorter Us to UK, but dress in smart ( never know...upgrade ) but loose casual, you may want to get some support stockings as they will help with cabin pressure. Have a great time, we loved New York

We used the airport shuttle service ( we arrived at JFK, stayed and flew onto Vegas from Newark ), very reasonable, door to door and the transportation desk at JFK was awesome. As far as seat allocation goes, check SKYTRAX, which has a seat layout fro all the airlines and their aircraft. You can often pre book your seats as we did in February on flights to and from Singapore with SIA.

True about customs. MCartur Glen is the best place for good bargins.

I always wear shorts on any flight and take your shoes off (remember die hard), sit back and make yourself at home

Luckily for me when I fly outside Europe it's always business class. You do get some tossers right enough that think they are well above the rest and think they deserve special treatment.

I always look upon it as a treat and don't abuse the privilege - although I usually end up pissed.

Well frenchies and thongs tend to give beautiful wedgies which you don't want whilst sitting on a flight
