"He has epitomised living with a condition rather than dying of it. That's what I have found so wonderful about him. " This is what I like about him. So many people let their illness define them. It's all about what they can't do because of it. Not what they can do in spite of it!

Thumbs up for Stephen, an absolutely amazing person

"He did well. I hope his funeral reflects the joy with which he seems to have lived life. " maybe not the funeral itself... but you can imagine the memorial service that is bound to be planned for me is going to be one of the most fun and cool events you know thats what he would have wanted.... keep giving... the text donation line is still open to anyone who hasn't so far

"sadly just been announced that he has passed away..... he did a lot to raise awareness and did a fantastic job in fund raising... he is in a better place and now free of pain... RIP stephen... hope the trolls are happy now. social media is a power for people doing some absolutely amazing things. but it also gives a platform to some truly nasty people, nasty horrible people that dont deserve to share the air the rest of us enjoy, but thats the price we pay for freedom of speech i suppose. rip steve." I saw some comments made on an article and it sickened me as to what people were saying

"What an inspirational figure he was and no doubt will always be to those unfortunate enough to be going through such tough times. How much did the final tally come to on his fundraiser site? I am sure it will be ever greater today Very Sad RIP "

"mean no offence to the lads memory, but if i hear his name once more it will be too often. local radio is going completely overboard with it all. must say, however, his parents keeping it together throughout everything is wonderous to behold, i have to admit. couldnt imagine doing it myself" and why shouldnt they go overboard. He raised £4000000 lets hope his name is spoken well into the future, what an inspiratioin

"The inspiration is from the ability to be positive when most of us would want to hide. Your friend is remarkable too and publicity often finds causes much less worthy such as C list celebs." again, there are people facing adversity with dignity and a smile, without courting publicity. yes, i find the whole celebrity culture abhorrent also, but people want others to look up to. i will not say stephen is not deserving of adulation. however, are we so thin on the ground for people to look up to we have to go to a 19 year old?

To raise any kind of money on that scale you need to "court" publicity otherwise how are you going to raise the money

"again, there are people facing adversity with dignity and a smile, without courting publicity. ?" To be fair I don't think he was trying to be a celebrity , but it looks like it took off with social media more than anything else. I am not a lover of all those type of sites but it didn't do the charity any harm on this occasion. I admire the lad for turning the end of his life into a positive just like hundreds of other people who do the same but are not known or heard of..... but like you I am not getting the almost lying in state thing that is going on.

"I think he was inspirational. Yes, others worked tirelessly to support him and enabled that money to be raised but that is because they were inspired. My concern is that fundraising from now on will only take off if there is a good tragic story linked to an individual. Some causes already struggle as they don't have a good fluffy poster boy/girl/animal. Incontinence is hard to fundraise. " i agree with all your sentiments, without stephen suttons desire to raise the initial £10,000 as part of his bucket list then there would not have been the £4 million that it currently stands at and yes like others have mentioned there have been many many people who.have contributed to the fund raising efforts however without his initial drive it would never have happened, as for a figure to follow its the way of the world whether be good or bad, do you think osama bin laden could run an entire terrorist network, not a chance but the press and the public needed a figure of hate to fix theirs minds on and its the same when its someone who is a figure for good, thats just the way it goes just ride the waves to the shore

There have been others in Stephen Sutton's shoes but few can inspire others in the way that he did. His last reported quote is inspirational.

"I have been truly moved by his passing, similar to Jane Tomlinson. I find the two of them and Katie Piper, truly inspiring... " I know what you mean... I'm pretty hard about these things but the courage shown by Steven was in the same league as Jane who also had the same effect. I'll admit a tear came to my eye with both their passings... Two people who worked tirelessly and in the full knowledge that they would never see their true aim fulfilled... But just did it to help others... The stars in the sky just got a bit brighter with these two. They should be an inspiration to us all.

"Maybe we should have a Lichfield social, for fab supporters in his honour. Many of us found him inspirational, and social networking and the media is just a flavour of the times, if you found the publicity too much- that wasnt him. " thats a capital idea
