social media is a power for people doing some absolutely amazing things.

but it also gives a platform to some truly nasty people, nasty horrible people that dont deserve to share the air the rest of us enjoy, but thats the price we pay for freedom of speech i suppose.

Inspirational, dignified right to the end and a young man has shown the country and the rest of the world that great things can be achieved under the direst of circumstances. I heard the news after visiting my mother. R4 played the clip of Stephen saying that life should not be measured in years lived but in your achievements.

He lived a full life by that measure.

a mate of mine started running, to help him with depression, did lots of races in aid of the samaritans, as they helped him through some very dark times.

was speaking to him on monday.

because of bleeding in his retina, he is now almost completely blind, out of the blue, no warning, still suffering with depression and yet still wanting to do his charity work.

hasnt courted publicity either

there are proper inspirational people around, that havent done it simply because they have been told their time is short.

whether steven would have done what he did had he not been dying will never be known, but doing things for others because you face adversity isnt the most inspirational act one can do.

doing it when you have no real reason to, thats inspirational.

agree or not, there are much more deserving people in the world, of al this adulation

yes, i find the whole celebrity culture abhorrent also, but people want others to look up to.

i will not say stephen is not deserving of adulation.

Without the help of social sites, media and news £40000 would never have been raised. To raise any kind of money on that scale you need to "court" publicity otherwise how are you going to raise the money

To be fair I don't think he was trying to be a celebrity , but it looks like it took off with social media more than anything else.

I am not a lover of all those type of sites but it didn't do the charity any harm on this occasion.

I admire the lad for turning the end of his life into a positive just like hundreds of other people who do the same but are not known or heard of..... but like you I am not getting the almost lying in state thing that is going on.

I agree with Ruggers. He never courted celebrity. Was his initial target not just to raise just £10k and complete as much as possible on his bucket list? But very near to the end of his life his story went viral.

I hate celebrity culture, I'm not sure what Stephen Sutton and particularly his death really has in common with it though.

im not saying HE did personally.

i know he only wanted to raise his 10k target, and far surpassed it.

but, lets step back into reality.

what did he actually do?

nothing, he was too ill.

it was friends and family that rallied round and did everything on his behalf.

he didnt raise 4 million for the charity, they actually made him the face of teenage cancer trust, his friends and family tirelessly campaigning on his behalf raised the 4 million.

im sorry, i appreciate others arent going to feel the same way, i understand that, but i dont find him any more inspirational than many other people that arent the flavour of the moment, thanks to the media and social networking.

I agree to a point that he maybe didn't 'do' a great deal - but he unquestionably inspired many others to do a great deal. I can't see that somebody can be described as anything but inspiring if they manage to inspire others to action.

Media coverage is always a bit distasteful in these circumstances because underlying it all is the fact that they use the news to make money. But it can be argued that the lad used the media to do good. Good for him, and I'm sure he'd be happy knowing that it would provide some comfort to his family.

My concern is that fundraising from now on will only take off if there is a good tragic story linked to an individual. Some causes already struggle as they don't have a good fluffy poster boy/girl/animal. Incontinence is hard to fundraise.

i agree with all your sentiments, without stephen suttons desire to raise the initial £10,000 as part of his bucket list then there would not have been the £4 million that it currently stands at and yes like others have mentioned there have been many many people who.have contributed to the fund raising efforts however without his initial drive it would never have happened, as for a figure to follow its the way of the world whether be good or bad, do you think osama bin laden could run an entire terrorist network, not a chance but the press and the public needed a figure of hate to fix theirs minds on and its the same when its someone who is a figure for good, thats just the way it goes just ride the waves to the shore

I know what you mean... I'm pretty hard about these things but the courage shown by Steven was in the same league as Jane who also had the same effect. I'll admit a tear came to my eye with both their passings... Two people who worked tirelessly and in the full knowledge that they would never see their true aim fulfilled... But just did it to help others... The stars in the sky just got a bit brighter with these two. They should be an inspiration to us all.
