fast food chain Subways remove ham/bacon from their menu

well according to the daily mail the fast food chain "Subways" has opted to remove ham/bacon from their menu's due to increased demands from their majority muslim customers who dont eat pork as a consequence of strict religious custom dictate's...however there has been a rather strong racially charged back lash as a result as many smallminded bigots have jumped on the bandwagon and used the situation as a reason to voice their concerns that not only are foreigners coming here and taking their jobs and women but now their also taking their ham/bacon ...off the menu lol

who agree's that it's the "dastardly muslims" that are conspiring to taking over the world by forcing us to eat healthier and more ethically or who think's that it's ridiculous that anyone should care as if one was feeling peckish for some ham/bacon then they need only pop to greggs for a sausage roll or bacon sarny or any one of the other numerous food establishments that cater to lovers of the flesh of swine

to pork or not to pork...that is the question

Wasn't it the case this was in one area and it was replaced with Halal meat? Whatever the reason, whilst I am all for catering for the food needs of another culture, it should cover ALL cultures and not just one.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

It seems an odd commercial decision to make - bacon sandwiches or a ham and cheese sandwich are popular choices.

I hadn't heard this one. No commercial business would remove something that makes a profit.

There's calls to boycott Subway on my Facebook feed...

Personally, if I want a bacon butty, I would go to a greasy spoon anyway.

Its not wholly true, they are taking them off the menu from nearly 200 stores and replace it with halal meat, shops will replace them with turkey ham and display the halal sign. This program started in 2007 not recently as the Daily Mail said.

The meat practices at the remaining 183 stores were not confirmed.

Dont read the Daily Mail, so dont know if this is a true story. However considering that that only 4.8% of the UK population is Muslim (2011 censer) I find it hard to believe that an American multinational business would risk offending and alienating over 95% of its potential customer base in order to curry favour with fundamental Islamists.

Unless folk like the bigots the o p refers to stand up for the majority and not minority in uk no one else will.

To clarify this is nowt to do with islam in particular but when things like this happen muslims are up in arms and create a storm yet when non muslims kick off about this for example they are called bigots.

I always have always will speak my mind not intentionally to offend but if folk are offended by say this post thats their issue not mine.

David Cameron recently has was slated for saying do not be afraid to stand up for christianity whilst not religious myself he raises a good point.

Freedom of speech still exists just about in uk but folk are scared to criticise islam or its followers for fear of called racist when in fact its about expressing personal views.

its great that they are respecting their religion but there are so many choices on the menu if they dont want to eat it then dont or rather than replace them with halal substitutes stock both on the menu so muslim and other customers are not denyed them. May be selfish but I dont see why I should forfeit bacon to please others and makes you wonder where it will end? soon suppermarkets wont be allowed.to stock these products either? even though there are plenty or alternative specialist shops stocking not just halal meats but the other supermarts such as the polish and oriental ones you see in most places.now, think its madness that they cant offer options to suit customers from all walks of life

I bet you a million pounds that supermarkets (sainsburys , tesco, waitrose et al) will not stop serving bacon in your lifetime.

I don't understand the dismay?

A private sector business has decided that for 200 of its establishments, it will serve halal meat only. I presume this will be in heavily populated Muslim areas. What is the actual issue and hysteria? It is not a new thing either as subway has had halal branches for a decade!

This is a subway decision and not one enforced by the Muslim community. Also, why drag tesco and asda into this? Even if Tesco or Asda do go down this route then the market will provide opportunities for butchers who sell pork and bacon.

Private companies should be able to do as they see fit. Just vote with your feet if your not happy.

I have many Muslim friends who cannot eat a beef burger at a pub as it's not halal. Muslims don't seem to complain about this and simply go elsewhere.

If people still feel that the government needs to intervene to ensure that food establishments sell food for all communities then it should apply to everybody - and I mean everybody. Otherwise as a sensible poster said, go to Greggs!

We were discussing this at work today. I dont use Subway but as said above why cant they cater for all cultures. I work in a school, for the catering company that provides the school meals. We provide vegetarian hot and cold food (sandwiches etc.) so all are catered for. We have had a child ask if the meat is halal and we have had to say no it isnt. So, ok we dont cater for the halal culture, but do offer a wide range of vegetarian options. No complaints so far.

I find the whole ethos of halal wrong. The idea that meat is only fit to eat if a Muslim cleric prays over the animal when it is being killed disgusting, and although I understand the why where and when that brought the practice into being and fully accept that in its time and place it was a good idea, it is not necessary or appropriate for the here and now (that is the UK today).

Personally, I refuse to spend my money in any place that advertises that it only sells halal food (and there are a lot of them in Manchester).

Don't forget, when we visit a Muslim country, they go out of the way to allow us to eat and drink anything we want so that we feel comfortable.

No wait! They don't, do they? In fact can't you be hung for eating non halal in some of the more radical areas!

I dont own the company just work for them. The students are happy to eat our vegetarian/meat products that they are allowed to eat within our culture. We just dont provide halal meat as that meat, so im informed, is prepared by a halal butcher, which school catering companies dont have connection with.

Most of their sandwich combinations require at least one of the two, so Subway are really going to change all their menus and a portion of their customer base (I like Subway Melts), just to apease a very small minority?

Doubtful.

Even if they did we still have the choice (as with most things) to change that by voting with our feet/wallet and going to another near by establishment that does cater for what we want.

lol it's interesting to note that islam is not the only religion that has an issue with eating swine....it is also widely stated in christianity that though shall not consume the flesh of the unclean swine

Leviticus 11:7-8

And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

Isaiah 66:17

“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord

You are entitled to your view although I see it as no more disgusting than the suffocated cod I will be eating tomorrow night from my chippy!

But this thread is about Subway deciding to make some of their branches halal to bolster their profits I guess.

It's also interesting that in these debates kosher meat is rarely brought into this 'disgusting practice' or the Easter tradition of eating spring lambs. I mean how can we be so cruel and eat a poor baby when the mama lamb or papa lamb can also be so tasty!

You get the point? There is a strong undercurrent from some posters when anything Muslim is mentioned, particularly by the daily mail!

If this makes business sense for Subway what's the big deal. KFC have been doing this for years and a lot of their stores only use Halal chicken, they just don't advertise the fact.

I was in India for work last year, I went to subway and had their alturnative meets (pork free as halal & beef free for Hindu) and I hand on heart couldn't tell the difference as it tasted exactly the same & was healthier.

I'm sure in predominately Jewish areas Subway will use kosher meat rather then halal.

Before making the decision Subway will have done a huge amount if research into it.

If people looked at this as a business decision and not as "the evil Muslims taking over the world" it would make a lot more sense.

I'm more worried about the mango import ban as Indian mangos are the best mangos.....

"

Congratulations you take the pork pie prize for the most concentrated amount of nonsense written in a single post.

Listen to yourself. Please. Take a step back and listen to what you are saying. It is mental. Ignorant, short sighted and almost incoherent.

We sent millions of our men to die in Europe in the 40s (also millions of Muslims, Hindus and other creeds, many from the countries who the chaps you are all moaning about come from) to stop the rise of racist intolerant nationalism. I bet as a true brit you are proud of that. And well you should be. But now you are acting as a racist intolerant nationalist.

It was the Muslims that took our bacon into outer space and knackered the moon landing mission. Remember Lee Oswald Harvey? His friend's Aunt was one of them Muslims. Proves my point, really. And don't get me started on them other religious freaks and agnostics and all. Just not right, is it? Jellied eels, I say. With coal dust. Won't be long before I can't blah.

4 quid for a snadwich, and a mans measure of 6 inches, aint my idea of vfm, so i dont use the chain anyway (V got one the weekend and i must say, my ghast was absolutely flabbered)

whatever they deem to ensure the companies commercial success then thats what they have to do.

personally, i would never knowingly consume halal meat, as its process is barbaric (yes, mass produced meat is murder too, but halal is particularly cruel, i would rather e bolted in the head and electrocuted than have my throat cut and bleed to death, but each to their own)

but i dont use subway anyway

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

If you've ever had a kebab or pizza after a few drinks in the pub, the likelihood is that you have eaten halal meat.

It's no big deal. Plenty of other places cater to people's desire for pork.

We've had kosher meat in this country for generations. Same thing. Never particularly bothered people before. So any backlash now smacks of bigotry.

We do the same in muslim countries. In Qatar there are places that Brits go to get pork and alcohol as they demand it. It is part of being multicultural and tolerant that you create facility for people with different tastes and needs to get what they want. Muslim countries do not just tell non muslim people to like it or lump it. They provide for them. We do the same. Be proud of that fact.

"Unless folk like the bigots the o p refers to stand up for the majority and not minority in uk no one else will.

Freedom of speech still exists just about in uk but folk are scared to criticise islam or its followers for fear of called racist when in fact its about expressing personal views."

So how many generations do you have to be born here to be called British? ALL the Muslims I work and live near are professional, hard working and dedicated. Unfortunately, none of them have the union jack outside their house because of bigots that factionalise individuals.

Most Muslims have managed their lives fine pretending to be vegetarians. As companies have seen a niche, they have started catering for them. Supply and demand, simple as that. But instead people want to stop that because it caters for 'muslims' who are, in their view, the root of all evil. This kind of osterising attitude is what prevents them from ever feeling at home. It's those idiots that stand around chanting outside subways etc that make marginalise people. The daily hate is their voice.

Every single nationalist fanatic that seems to go on about this saying they should go back to their own country. Where is that exactly? Guess they didn't do geography in school. Oh I guess it's not a religion thing, it's a colour thing.

So next time you take your unemployed bum on night out and buy your cigarettes from a Muslim owned petrol station, which sells Muslim land derived petrol, to go to the pub to watch your favourite Muslim owned football team, get into a fight and get your Muslim taxi driver to take you to the hospital to see a Muslim doctor, ask yourself why does my local subway sell halal food. The answer should be there, unless your head was hit really hard.

But that is an issue for subway not Muslims. But this thread clearly highlights what kind of views and prejudices people have.

Food establishments all over the country cater for both. I guess for subway having to source bacon instead of blanket catering with Turkey is financially more sound. But as usual that comes down to the fault of Muslims.

Do you eat from a Subway that serves halal or is one of the 200 that will do in the future?

If yes, why not ask subway, the bloody profit making business that made this decision? I am fairly certain that no Muslim was in the board room holding a Muslamic ray gun demanding this?

Also, with your logic why can't all McDonald's sell halal Big Macs along with the standard variety?

I personally feel profit making businesses can do as they see fit and unhappy folk means a new market opening up for potential caterers!

I think you'll find it isn't. There's no sign and there's a lot of pork on the menu. I mentioned it only as someone said franchises cater to all cultures. They don't.

Businesses cater for supply and demand. If a particular branch of Subway - or even all of them - find that it is not cost effective to sell pork why should they?

People don't like it they can shop elsewhere.

And just taking this point a little further. Most Muslim countries which have foreign people eg dubai have pork and alcohol available in most restaurant etc

So would these same people who argue against halal being available, protest to why a Muslim country is catering for non-Muslims.

When some of these minority bigots actually make it abroad to a place like dubai, how many follow their local customs? So why the double standards. There are always a small percentage of idiots in every group. Unfortunately, my experience shows that it's an increasing percentage with a falling in making all of our lives hard.

Subway have obviously come to this deduction because there was no demand for both. If they were selling loads if ham or bacon in these particular shops I doubt they would stop selling it.

This is exactly why The Daily Mail is a vile, vitriol filled rag.

They feed a non-story into the public domain, with scant facts and faint information, and try and turn it into a race debate.

The OP makes it sound like ALL Subways are removing ham/bacon. No. 175 stores out of 1500. If these shops are in Muslim areas if makes sense to change - that's being business savvy!

"If this makes business sense for Subway what's the big deal.

"

I'm worried about the Alfonso mango ban too. The tastiest mango ever.

"This thread is brilliant.

The word Muslims is being used to describe people as if it is their defining identity. People who are muslim can be native brits, immigrants, second or third generation immigrants, converts, all sorts of people.

Stop factionalising the country. We all live here for whatever reason and for however long. Everyone in the UK is an immigrant so do not look down on those who are different to you because really we are all the same.. .when i see thousands apon thousands of Muslims women and men in Britain burning the union jack and spouting anti British shite im not the only one that thinks they will eventually take over. that would never have happened fifty years ago so what wil it be fifty years from now..Thats why i think Muslims will eventually take over and they know that too.

1000s and 1000s - are you sure? The communities I know would seriously chastise any of theirs burning the Union Flag. I travel around the country, meeting lots of communities and I have met 1000s of Muslims and possibly two of them have been in any way radical.

"So how many generations do you have to be born here to be called British?

wow i couldnt have said it better had i said it myself ......teach them and let them learn the truth because the truth shall set us freeim touched to know that there are those who are passionate and courageous enough to stand up against the evils of bigotry which is the cancer of our society....if all the folk that are moaning about foreigners coming here and taking their jobs were to pull up their socks and work as hard as the immigrants and be as thankfull for what little they have then perhaps we wouldnt need to open jobs up for immigrants to come and take them because there are folk on the dole who expect to be handed their dream job and perhaps if the men of this country were to treat their women better like the princess's rather than battering them or ignoring them whilst your off down the pub with the lads to have a few hundreds pints and watch a bunch of buff guys running about in shorts kicking a ball and getting sweaty...perhaps then these dastardly foreign men coming here for jobs wouldnt find it so easy to take "our" women aswell lol ;0 just saying! rant over

This thread is so full of ridiculous it beggars belief, but I'll clarify a couple of things:

1) Most Halal slaughter is pre-stun (ie it is the same as 'normal' cept someone says a prayer - all kills are stunned and then bled) Kosher can never be pre-stun, but the Muslims are an easier target because any fule kno victimising the Jews leads to funny marches, toothbrush moustaches, armbands etc etc

2) Easter lamb is not 'just born' If it is actually a lamb it will have been born indoors in December/January and when the ewe was turned onto pasture she will have been fed to suppliment the poor winter grazing. Otherwise it will be a late finishing hogget (born the previous summer). Most sheep farmers would like to wean lambs at about 4 months at slaughter weight (although a lot will need a bit more 'bringing on' than that). Similarly, the outdoor, Apr/May lamber will aim to have his lambs gone by christmas....

I would go on, but I can't be arsed.

Can't stand subway myself but surely

They've done their research into this and found that ham/pork isn't selling in these particular shops so are stopping selling it.

I used to run a pub kitchen and we often changed the menu if things weren't selling. Not good business sense to have food sitting around then getting thrown away.

I don't think the problem is that they sell halal products,it is that the stopped selling pork and bacon.Cant they just do both and please everyone?

Do you eat from a Subway that serves halal or is one of the 200 that will do in the future?

If yes, why not ask subway, the bloody profit making business that made this decision? I am fairly certain that no Muslim was in the board room holding a Muslamic ray gun demanding this?

Also, with your logic why can't all McDonald's sell halal Big Macs along with the standard variety?

I personally feel profit making businesses can do as they see fit and unhappy folk means a new market opening up for potential caterers! "

I don't care what McDonald's or subway sells I just asked if they could sell both.Chill out.

"Finally, taking it one step further, most meat in Western countries is halal. Places like Republic of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand have a large halal market with virtually 80% of all chicken producing being halal. They don't sell it as that in the native country but do so because they have large export markets with middle eastern and far eastern countries that are Muslim.

This is what keeps thousands of people in work, the good old circle of life.

So the issue should be why do we manage livestock so badly in poor conditions, and why is there a horse in my soul, rather than why are 10% of all subways going to sell halal only in places where their only customer eat halal. "

To be "certified Halal" no as there would be pork on the premises. It has to be a pork free zone and it would bet very easy for products to become cross contaminated (however they got around that mat the Subway I went to in India easily).

I'm really struggling why this is even a news story it's been going on since 2007 and Subway have a section on their website dedicated to this.

It's at best very very old news, if it's even really news at all!

"Unless folk like the bigots the o p refers to stand up for the majority and not minority in uk no one else will.

Freedom of speech still exists just about in uk but folk are scared to criticise islam or its followers for fear of called racist when in fact its about expressing personal views.lol it's interesting to note that islam is not the only religion that has an issue with eating swine....it is also widely stated in christianity that though shall not consume the flesh of the unclean swine

Leviticus 11:7-8

And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

Isaiah 66:17

“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord"

I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist: they don't eat pork. My daughter is and I have a separate utensils so her vegan food doesn't "contaminate" my pork!

whatever they deem to ensure the companies commercial success then thats what they have to do.

personally, i would never knowingly consume halal meat, as its process is barbaric (yes, mass produced meat is murder too, but halal is particularly cruel, i would rather e bolted in the head and electrocuted than have my throat cut and bleed to death, but each to their own)

but i dont use subway anyway"

And what about the English Muslims, English Jewish, English Hindus, English Sikhs etc.....they are all English but have varied good and customs so not really seeing your point.

However them Scots with their deep fried mars bars can just do one!!

Mind you, a deep fried creme egg sounds so disgusting that it just might work. Perhaps the Scots could export it and civilise all those black native countries? They still cook folk up in cauldrons there, you know. Give 'em a creme egg and they might get cultured."

actually the insinuation that there are barbaric cannibalistic tribes of blacks was racist propaganda to villify blacks and justify the slave trade and invading their resource rich countries and sucking them dry all in the name of colonialism there is actually more evidence of torture and cannibalism in european culture

Makes my blood boil!! It's not right!!! If people don't want a certain thing don't eat it!! No reason for everyone else to miss out.

I used to be in a council gym and turned up one night to be told sorry you can't go in! When I asked why I was told that it was Asian/ethnic night! This was as well as the lady only night. Now I'm all for equality etc etc and I asked when the white men only night was happening? Was met with a look of disgust and was told that was not going to happen as it would be seen as racist!!! I then asked to see where in my membership details it said I could be excluded from the gym? The manager said it didn't! I then said we'll I'm going in so try to stop me. He told me he would call the police. I replied that I would discuss it with them when they arrived. (they never did by the way) and no one in the gym batted an eye lid. And by the way I love a bacon sandwich but I have a few Muslim friends who come to mine of a weekend and sit with me and have something else and not one of them is bothered as we are all different and have different beliefs.

We do, but that doesn't mean we have the correct humane standards. We have a highly efficient process with 800,000 livestock slaughtered a day in the EU, but the overall process is barbaric as ever but one we accept when you eat meat. Most halal is stunned so the process is virtually the same except a prayer recording going on in the background. So that whole thing of not eating it halal because is evil is nonsense, it's the same.

we are English in England, why should they remove it, its not as if we are asking others to eat it if they don't want to, but to remove it because others don't like it is total boll,,ks

each to their own no religious group should be able to impose their belleifes on others, , I wont bother using them again,

"Makes my blood boil!!

You can spot the daily mail readers

They start posts about their blood boiling. I'm not racist, but brigade.

Agreed. "I am not racist but there are too many wogs"

Who are the barbarians? Those who travel the world and see things and meet new people or those who repel fellow humans because this land is not for them?

It makes my blood boil.

Or those: I'm not racist - I've got a Muslim mate

Oh I missed "political correctness gone mad" "

Can I add badly spelled rants to the list?

Not everyone in England is English. I am Scots. Does that mean I am not welcome to ask for Irn Bru?

THEY are not imposing anything at all. Any suggestion of that is at best erroneous and at worst a LIE! It is a business decision by Subway in a minority of their stores.

Exactly the point. Subway shouldn't remove it, but what the hell has that got to do with Muslims? I've never seen a Muslim picketing outside a subway.

But I have seen a man swear at a woman for buying halal labelled near at a store, a woman sticking labels on food tins saying ban halal, and a man dressed as a chicken with an edl banner outside a KFC in Blackburn asking them to stop halal meat.

Now tell me who is enforcing rules on who? The choice is yours, if you don't want a shop to sell halal then don't go. Unless someone is forcing you to eat halal subway everyday?

Why is it so hard to understand that a PRIVATE PROFIT making COMPANY will make its own decisions based on HOW MUCH PROFIT they can make?

Not forgetting the Laws of the Land of course.

I would've thought/guessed the LA Clippers were a private/incorporated co.

There are some topics that act as a dog whistle for the hard of thinking to storm in, sPeKe thEir bRaneS without having even a tenuous grasp of the issue, let alone a nuanced one, and then wander off again to find the next thing to get outraged about.

This is one of those topics.

Shhh, you know how bad Legoland is for pandering to the Muslims.

Don't tell anyone by the Jewish people where I live have SOLE USE of the swimming pool once a week. The bloody council shouldn't be allowing minority groups to hire the whole pool for their own use. What about the rest of us who might want to use it when it would normally be closed. As they are they we should be allowed to (as long as we don't have to pay the private hire fee, of course).

You really get that angry because a sandwich outlet that you're never likely to visit decides to stop selling ham which their customers are not likely to buy ? How are you when something serious happens ?

I don't think even the use of capital letters will help them to understand Lickety, far too many on this thread with their fingers in their ears singing la-la-la only taking them out to hear the word Muslim and getting all outraged about it

Best post on the thread thus far, I'm fairly sure none of their 'meat' is real anyway, my son has similar looking stuff in his play kitchen
