Best before means that it may have lost some of its quality or flavour.

Use by might give you the shits so I tend not to if it's more than a day over.

Yoghurt; yes, it's safe for months.

Beef; sniff test.

Chicken; never.

Milk; never.

Clotted cream; yes, keeps for weeks.

Fresh prawns from a very well known supermarket; there is something very wrong when they show no sign of decay despite being 5 months past their BBD. Kept, purely as an experiment.

Otto Spunkmyer banana and walnut muffin; don't ever eat one. I have one that has no BBD / SBD and shows no decay at all, despite being over 4 years old. Again, kept as an experiment as the ingredients list appeared to be inversely proportional to something that I would want in my mouth.

Chocolate muffin from a well known British manufacturer; see Otto Spunkmyer above. Still unchanged despite being 8 years old.

I unwittingly bought a 2 litre bottle of cider a few years back. When I had my first mouthful I was nearly sick.

It was 9 months out of date and tasted like vinegar

The shopkeeper apologised and gave me 3 bottles of new stock

Yes as long as it's not mouldy etc.

Food that's contaminated with salmonella, e-coli etc will generally look, smell and taste fine. So they look, smell, taste test is pretty useless

I won't eat anything that has gone out of date and if something says keep open and use within 7 days it's binned soon as the time is up. We actually write what day some things were opened before putting it back in the fridge so we know when it's got to be binned. Can't stand the thought of eating stuff out of date even though most things are probably fine.

Food and drink never lasts that long in my house with a permanently ravenous teenager and his friends ..... locusts leave more behind than they do in the fridge.

On the label of a bottle of cider it usually says :-

Once opened, keep refrigerated and consume within 3 days.

3 DAYS

Lucky if it lasts 3 hours

No. I can't do it. It's all in my mind I know but I can't eat anything that has been in the fridge for more than two days or anything not in date. Tesco Express had whole legs of lamb for 85p a kilo after Easter, but were out of date that day. A restaurant owner bought 15 of them at least

It depends on two things:

If I know how long it's been in my fridge for...then I will.

If I don't know how long it's been in my fridge for then I don't cos I forgot it was in there.

^ that last one is disgusting actually and it's also an insight into the single males fridge ..just so you know..

Yes, some things are perfectly safe and the BBE dates are mainly just to save the arses of the shop/manufacturer if someone is ill.

I've got a couple of yoghurts that went out of date on Sunday. Had eggs that have been 2 weeks from their BBE date and were fine.

Its just common sense really, my friend works for a supermarket and eats out of date stuff all the time.

Beef is quite safe, even if it's 75 days or so old, the storage conditions matter; if it's in contact with moisture it will begin to decompose, become slimy and smell. If there is no moisture contact then it will have an odour, but will not be slimy.

Storage conditions are extremely important; plastic films trap moisture and result in spoiling, ventilated storage reduces this.

Bacterial spoilage depends on the bacterial count of the initial cut (chicken high, beef low) and the storage.

The ingestion safety can be assessed by the appearance, texture, smell and type of meat; not entirely fool-proof, but no assessment ever is, and the risk is mitigated by the cooking technique.

Fish is an excellent example; fresh fish smells of the ocean or river i.e. salty or clean, it does not smell 'fishy'.

So, I will still eat old, dry beef but I will not eat cling film wrapped chicken, or fish, that is one or two days over the BBD / SBD.

Trust your nose and fingers.

Since being on here I've read about people licking other peoples bits and shoving their tongue in all sorts of places

I don't think a can of pop that's nearly out of date should frighten anyone

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

"Had eggs that have been 2 weeks from their BBE date and were fine."

I've had eggs that were two months past their BB date and were fine. If they feel suspicious, do the old water trick.

I'll eat anything that's not actively trying to live, or that's not decayed. Mouldy cheese? Cut it off. Mould spots on bread? Cut it off. Mould on the side of pesto jars? Scrape it off. I am more careful with chicken and shellfish though, as they can make you very ill indeed.

whoops! I must be tired, as I read the title as "would you eat out a date". I thought to my self, "well, yeah if she'll let me" lol

I regularly buy "t end of date" foods. Bread is fine if you keep it in the fridge. I would never buy out of, or near end of date meat though. Nor sea food.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I often do. If it looks or smells off then it's for the bin. Just like when I was a kid. We didn't all keel over from food poisoning. Just need a little common sense not dates on packaging.

Growing up there wasnt "labels" on food re "use by" and "sell by"

My mom would use common sense and if it looked ok and smelt ok then it was eaten.

God knows how we survived without all the bloody labels and instructions that some people need in order to eat something.

The dates on food are really stupid, I only ever buy reduced meat, I think the price of it generally is ridiculous, if I'm not cooking it that day, it goes straight in the freezer. Bbe, is a guide, means shops have to sell it by then, or waste it. Use by, is on things that food poisoning is a potential for, apply a dose of Common sense. That's really all it takes, if it smells funmy or is moving of its own accord, or wearing a fur coat, then chuck it, if everything seems Fine, wash/prep/cook and tuck in. X

Same. If it's best before, I'll eat past the date. Use by I wouldn't chance.

Products that have long BBD are jyst guidelines in my opinion - a thing thats sat on the shelf for 5 months wont self destruct after one month let alone a day.

Use by are different and I wouldnt eat after more than one day past - i buy loads and loads of cheap meats at Tesco reduced section - sometimes its 25% original price - I freeze it all straightaway on day of use by
