"Ok...as it's 8am. What was your question anyway? " I'm trying to find a replacement charger for a cordless inspection lamp because the original has gone missing. ---- The lamp has a label saying: "3.6V, 1800mAH Ni-MH" which I believe refers to the battery. ---- The manual says: "Description: 3.6V DC, less than 2.4W Electric Capacity - Charger Input: 100-240V AC, 50-60Hz, less than 5W Output: 4.5V DC, less than 2.5W Electric Capacity - Ni-MH Battery Output: 3.6V DC " ---- I've asked a friend who has the same sort of lamp about the charger that came with it and the label on that reads: " Input: 100-240V AC, 50-60Hz, 0.3A Output: 4.5V DC, 800mA " ---- Now, bear in mind that I never did physics and my electrickeral knowledge is patchy. As far as I am aware, the replacement charger needs to match the voltage of the original and supply at least as much current. I can't find a 4.5V 800mA charger. I have found a 4.5V 1A charger with the right connector on though, and I'm thinking that ought to be fine. Would anyone like to confirm or deny please.

I don t think there d be a problem my only reservation is if the charging output is too great the battery may overheat Power (watts) = AMPS x volts as the amperage has gone up by a small amount I d think it would be within tolerances Will you be leaving the battery whilst its on charge,?

It's not for me, which is why I need to be sure there will be no problem. Yes, I expect it will be left charging unattended.

"OP, there will be a part number on your charger. Do an EBAY search for that number, with luck it will take you straight to a number of suppliers of said part." Good plan, but sadly not. It's a generic charger from some Chinese company. It's not branded.

Failing that you could always do a search for 3.5v 800mw (or whatever) DC chargers. Just do a google search to find the part and part number then use the number to do an ebay search for a cheap supplier. Its not that hard.

" Now why didn't I think of that Thanks for being incredibly patronising. I *have* googled for 4.5V 800mA chargers. I can't find one. Not even a multi-voltage switching one. I have found 600mA ones and 1A ones but no 800mA. And there is no part number for the charger in the manual because the generic Chinese one is the one supplied with the product. It comes with a generic charger, not a branded one. Searching on the web and on ebay for "replacement charger" and the item model doesn't bring anything up either. I'm not the sort to ask for help without looking for myself first. I'd have thought that was clear from the information I provided. The information from the manual came from having googled for the manual. The information on the charger came from asking someone else who owns one the details of the charger it came with. If you can't be helpful then please feel free to at least not behave like an arse.

"TBH if it's a cheap chinese lamp a replacement will probably be cheaper than a new charger from Maplin. A 600mah charger will work, it will just take a bit longer to charge." It's not a cheap lamp. That's the thing. It's a respected brand. The charger it came with - at least, the charger my friend says his came with (since I have never seen the original charger for the lamp) - is generic and unbranded. I believe him though because the lamp is a German brand and the label on the cheap, generic charger is in English and German.

It should be fine, the charger circuit in the lamp will draw what it needs. Plus most chargers state variation of 1% within their tolerances anyway. Would be worth checking battery temp every half hour on first use just to be on the safe side. It's lithium batteries that sometimes "rapidly disassemble" nimh are much more forgiving.

Took me 20 mins to find but here is a link to an ebay supplier who sells a charger that will do what you want: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-4A-2400mA-AC-DC-Switching-Power-Adapter-Charger-Supply-3V-3-5V-4-5V-5V-6V-6-5V-/290598903580?pt=UK_ConsumerElectronics_PowerAdaptors_SM&hash=item43a90b5f1c It will cost you £18 the supplier is in Slough its free economy delivery and you can have it by Friday or you can pay for express delivery. Seems it was not that hard to find after all!

I've found what I need now, rather cheaper than £18 too. Thanks all the same.
