I'm not a fan of it either.

'Haha' is one extra character.

'Hah' has the same amount.

'Ha' has one less.

All of these options make it redundant and all of them sound less ridiculous.

/Rant.

Thank fuck you don't get any of my pm's (he smiles cheekily, having to avoid the use of acronyms which may have helped make this sentence a hell of a lot shorter).

I tend to use it a lot. However, it usually reflects the person i'm messaging or speaking to. If they use it. Then i'd use it. If they have never used it. Then i won't ever use it.

Different acronymes portray different feelings i would have thought. Some are cheeky and flirty (sorry, but i'd have to demonstrate) such as 'hehe'. That means 'ooh, i said something cheeky and flirty to show you i'm a bit naughty'.

Another example is 'hahaha'. That usually means 'that is so bloody funny i can't stop laughing and i'm not being sarcastic. Honest'.However, you may get the occasional 'ha ha', which means 'i am being a sarcy fucker and if you were here. I'd slap you'.

...the above is just to illustrate what on earth goes through my head as i sometimes type.

The comedienne, Tiffany Stevenson, does quite a good routine around the acronym lol

I do admit to occasionally using 'Teeheehee' when I want to make it obvious I'm teasing someone and not just being an abusive arsehat.
