At what age should you point out the reality to people or is it ok for someone to go on believing?

We never did the Easter bunny thing in our house. My parents also didn't do it. Is it a relatively new thing ?

My son asked me last year to tell him the truth if Santa is real. I was stuck because I didnt want to lie since I preach to him not to and felt that since he out right asked I shouldn't lie either. So I told him the truth. He gasped and said oh mom you should have lied. Can't win
