Genetics -v- Environment

I've had BBC News on since about April, and I've just seen that both Milibrand brothers are in the running for the Labour leadership (undeclared but they're both high up on the list of 'gimme to top slot'). There are two cousins, albeit distant, trying to determine who runs the country (Cameron & Clegg).

Two Ferdinand brothers, and a cousin, I believe, in top level football.

Millions of Baldwins all over the acting profession, along with hundreds Sheens, Douglasses and Barrymores.

So, my question is:

Do humans have a genetical propensity towards one profession or another, or is it down to being environmentally exposed to certain professions?

Up North :-)

Maybe they all had dads who wanted them to do what they are doing! In some cases its talent, parental pressure and nurture.

The Jacksons were a good example. They could all dance but only a couple or three were any good at singing!

you could ask the same about being gay/bi/strait. Are you borne that way or is it something you learn to be.

That made me chuckle... 20 years from now there could be zillions of Tiger-lookalikes winning every golf competition under the sun but not one of em can drive a car for toffee lol

NO! Not that debate please. This is about professions, not sexuality.

So is it genetics or environment? family members may all play the same instrument, or try to sing, but as another poster said, they might not all be good at it except one of them.

What about generations? Dionne Warwick is Whitney Houston's aunt, and Houston is related to the Womacks. All good singers in their day. Genetics?

It's usually phased as nature -v- nurture. And no-one ever won that argument conclusively! I really think it's a long game! I worked hard all my life, my bros didn't feel the necessity til they were in their 40s but older bro so successful! Similar story for friends and further family!

Something else i have noticed too.

For all these brothers/sisters how often do you ever see them dressed in identical matching jumpers/shorts/skirts etc like mum used to?

don't forget :

Venus and Serena Williams

Andy and Jamie Murray

Peter and Silvinho Francisco

Alex and John Higgins

George and George W.

Mario Andretti and his sons

Nelson Piquet and Nelson Piquet

Ray Parker Jr and his dad

personally i think that to get to be a professional in any sphere, sport, music etc you have to be born with a certain amount of talent.

No amount of hard work will get you there on its own. Take golf for example, a top scratch amateur is a long way away from a viable pro. The odd exception such as Eldrick and Rory of course.
