If it will be expensive to have the charger bit on an Acer laptop replaced? - I am aware this is a common fault with them!!

Titz Towers, North Notts

I'm curious as to what has happened to it. I'm sure it is a common fault, but I'm half expecting something bizarre to have occurred, involving a microwave

Near Edinburgh..

type the name and model number of the laptop into EBay and then search for chargers.. we got one for our Sony for less than a tenner from china..

I wouldn't trust any charger bought on the cheap from china after seeing on tv what damage they can do not only to homes but people as well.

I am assuming you are talking about the socket you plug the charger into? If its the case its often loose solder and can be fixed in many cases but make sure you go to a reputable repairer.

With all due respect this is terrible advice.

Most electrical items from china especially of which fall under the category of "chargers" are fakes.

They are not properly tested and if your unlucky enough to get a dodgy one you or a child could be killed and possibly your house burned down.

Minxie don't scrimp on this. Yes genuine acer parts are expensive (I have one myself) but it could save your life or those kids lives and/or serious damage.

The socket isn't expensive but if too much solder is used it can make the boar unusable the best people to use are local well established laptop repair men its something that is common but it takes a little skill to fix it properly good luck with getting it done.

It's more than likely a broken solder joint. Anyone with a soldering iron could repair that.

Sure you will be fine with a soldering iron Minxie. Insurance premium may shoot up a bit though

Around this area they charge about £40-£50 to replace the DC port on a lapyop, it's a problem on a lot of laptops, not just Acer, though I've got an old Acer that it's happened to, just haven't gotten round to getting it fixed yet.

Ok If the laptop is not charging at all and there is no obvious break in the charger it could be the laptop battery is faulty. If it is it wont charge and wont run from the mains with the battery still in the laptop. Remove the battery then try to use it with the charger plugged in to the laptop. If it works you know it was the battery. If it still doesn't then you know its the charger at fault.
