Surely I can't be the only one who wants very bad things to happen to the perpetrators of this sick practice. But I'd only have the death penalty for those who wield the instruments!!!

Well going off the lack of interest shown, it looks like either people are unconcerned or have no idea what FGM is.

There was quite a discussion a couple of weeks ago which included some very informed opinions and a great deal of concern.

Maybe people should stop using acronyms without explaining their meaning?

It is banned already but almost impossible to monitor. More cultural than religious, most people actually believe (wrongly I know) that it is for the best of the child; more hygienic, more attractive, and more desirable for marriage. Barbaric!!!

It really isn't a straightforward subject and I personally think education is the key.

we are also a culture that pierces children's ears for no reason other than fashion... Not judging, just throwing that out there!!!

Interesting. The fab society is also one which has many people who roundly condemn pubic hair for hygiene reasons. I too am aware that this is not the same in practice but it's uncomfortably close in principal.

No and I didn't say it was. I am saying that the mindset which believes that changing sometimes body is the norm and won't accept anything different us very similar.

I have done research, and attended many talks on the subject and actively involved in trying to tackle the issue.

I was merely offering not a comparison but an example of how we routinely subject children, often babies to pain for something to satisfy the personal preference of a parent. It's of no benefit to a child, yet parents will hold a child down, crying while it's done.

If you can tell me the similarites between ear piercing and the physical, emotional and pschological damage that having your genitals sliced off and your vagina stitched almost closed, causing years of pain, reccurent urinary tract infections and a ruined sex life does then ill happily accept the comparison

I've come across women that have undergone FGM a few times and it's heartbreaking

It's very much a tribal tradition and is usually carried out by community members without anaesthetic and using unsterile equipment, sepsis rates are high but due to the sensitivity of young girl, wanting to please their families, family loyalty ect it is very difficult to prosecute or get someone to testify.

It isn't a comparison it's an attempt to get people to realise the cultural and societal pressures that exist where this is carried out, to add to the discussion and to make people think. No one has said that piercing a childs ears is comparable to fgm.

I'm not going to preach too much but there are actually 4 main levels of FGM. Often women in the UK that have been subject of the worst sometimes have to sit for over half an hour just to open their bladder once, yes they have reoccurring infections and I'm not even going to begin of conceiving a child. But they chose to allow the opening created in child birth to close again rather then any corrective procedures.... It really is about educating to dispel myths and change opinions within cultures that practise it x

And hopefully maybe people with opinions based on little more then press and the odd documentary might want to drop off fab for an hour, Do some research and look at ways to get involved rather than have ATM chair opinions... We all disagree with it... But rather then along an angry stance we should understand the key issues x

What is it as less graphic as possible..

The only reason I'm not going to google is because I genuinely dont want to be fucking disturbed by what I might read.

That being said. .this thread is kind of sticking in my head...
