It's the overtaking lane for the left lane, as the right lane is the overtaking lane for the middle lane. Simples

Why people just insist on sitting endlessly in it I do not know......just overtake and be done

It's the lane that has the least oil from HGVs, and the least debris from vehicles' slip-streams. I can understand why older drivers use it exclusively - many years ago, in the "Roadcraft" rules it used to be known as "the lane of safety" but it stopped being called that in the early 1980s.

because it isnt.

hgv's dont drip oil anymore, in fact, with the way VOSA likes to take money out of the pocket of a driver, i would suggest many cars leave more debris on the roads than trucks.

whats safe about making a car go over 3 lanes to overtake someone sat in the middle one?

there is nothing safe about it

Cars definitely leave more debris than HGVs, and you're quite correct about HGVs losing less oil these days. Statistically, it's debatable which lane is the safest to be in - ROSPA haven't released all the data figures yet.

We love the middle lane!!

As when our naked driver picks us up to drive us to Kestrels or Ab-Fab parties, he drives in the middle lane mostly, with Sophie tied over the back seat (with a seat-belt over her back and ass), with her ass exposed in the middle of the two front seats and her face looking out at cars smiling, so as they pass in the fast lane, they get to see a smile then they look in and see a naked lady in doggy position with her wet pussy and a toy hanging as her ass cheeks are clenching it.

The slow lane - we drive past and wave at them, but sometimes people pull across from the fast lane and join the slow lane to have an extra look.

It is Brilliant.

We love the MIDDLE LANE!

(But yea, you bastards who hog the middle lane, you done pull over and there is no naked lady in your car is there!)

Hugs

Nick n Soph

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

It's a very important lane. It's the one used by the outside lane huggers to judge the progress and speed of their journey. If they are whizzing past those in the middle lane then all is good.

However, if the middle lane is moving faster than them then it's all the fault of the twat in front.

I have a very practical reason for not using the nearside lane. There are many sections of motorway in the UK where repeated use by heavy goods vehicles has worn tramlines into the carriageway, lethal when you only have 2 wheels!!

Having said that I can't remember the last time anything which didn't have a blue light on it passed me on the motorway

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

I usually plonk meself in the middle lane and use that and the fast lane...often I don't bother with the inside lane unless I'm coming off...if traffic starts to clog, I will use inside if I need to but I have to admit it's not often...I'm a pretty safe driver, 30 years on the road and my only motorway accident has been when someone pranged me in crawling traffic and shunted me into the car in front (in the fecking inside lane)

"Simple question, one word........

why?"

The reality is it doesn't really matter if they stop in it as there is the outside lane to pass them in. For a start some people are far safer in one lane I would rather that than pullout without looking. People who drive too close people who don't use the rear view mirror are far more of an issue. The end of the day people should be courteous to drivers behind them and in front of them.

It really does matter! The seasons you quote are all substandard driving. Crap drivers should retrain or stay off the roads. Driving incorrectly is highly dangerous for other road users, as well as the poor driver. Our roads are congested but flow better when drivers use all of the road capacity appropriately, which means spending time in all lanes.

But all drivers cannot use all of the lanes its not applicable so suggesting spending time in all of the lanes is just claptrap. Also jumping up and down over someone who is doing say 70mph in the middle lane is unjustifiable if you are a law obliging citizen and following the rules of the road.

but sitting in the middle lane at 70 is NOT following the rules of the road is it if you not overtaking anything move over to the empty lane to your left no matter what speed you are doing .if you have to come out again when you catch up with a slower vehicle good as it means you are staying awake and attentive to do so not plowing along in the middle lane oblivious to what is going on around you.

It proper grips my shit!! Usually women or older people chugging at 60. I've made a point now of sitting behind them and telling them to move over. This is when they're in the middle lane and the slow lane's clear. Obviously if they're overtaking it's fair game.

That and undertaking. But for people undertaking my lessons on not doing so are much more scarier. Idiots!

Simple. If you're not confident on the motorway find a different route!

explain how all drivers cannot utilise all lanes?

even doing 100mph, if the roads clear, you can still do it in the nearside lane

i dont understand your argument

undertaking SHOULD be allowed.

i do it.

you know why i do it?

because its much more dangerous for ME to cross 3 lanes of traffic to OVERtake an idiot in the middle lane, sitting at 60.

i sit in the PROPER lane, at 70, and go past a dozen cars.

i will argue it in any court in the land.

the highway code says to stay in the left hand lane unless overtaking.

well im not overtaking. im not flitting in and out of traffic im staying, quite safely, in the appropriate lane, and continuing with my journey, within the speed limit.

shame the same cant be said for others.

United Kingdom - The Highway Code discourages undertaking on motorways with some exceptions (rule 268): "Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake". Undertaking is permitted in congested conditions when frequent lane changing is not recommended.[4] On other roads, the Code advises drivers "should only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right" (rule 163).[5] Rule 163 uses advisory wording and "will not, in itself, cause a person to be prosecuted", but may be used in evidence to establishing liability in any court proceedings.[6] On all roads, undertaking is permitted if the vehicles in the lane to the right are queueing and slow moving.[citation needed] Undertaking in an aggressive or reckless manner could be considered Careless Driving or more seriously Dangerous Driving, both of which are legally enforceable offences.[dubious – discuss][citation needed]

Define slow, does a car driving for mile after mile at 60 in the middle lane while other vehicles are queing up to overtake at 65 on the outside and the inside is empty equate as slow moving...[citation not needed]
