Microsoft security essentials basic good cover . avast and avg give basic protection too

like the above poster said, get the free avg anti-virus download, get the free version of superantispyware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (free also), Spybot - Search & Destroy (free also)

also, if you are installing the ones i mentioned, do it slowly as because they are free they will try and get you to tick boxes to install extras you do not need like search bars

Work fine for me.

My tip with new laptop/pc. Do not install the anti virus software (usually Norton) that comes with it.
