As a horse owner & rider here's my 2 pence worth. Probably classed the same as horse poop!!

It is illegal for us to dismount off our horse on a road so therefore we cant scoop the poop.

Horse poop is not harmful unlike dog poop.

A lot of horses would spook if their riders had to carry big shovels & bin bags on their backs, which would then be even more dangerous to everybody around. A ton of horse which is scared could easily kill people by accident.

Lastly they dont have horse poop bins like they do dogs & it's bloomin heavy so I would hate to have to carry it with me on a 3 hour ride!!

We have a stable near us,the horses and donkeys go down onto the beach.

Probably 250 yard or so,however they do have a couple of stable girls come out after them with a shovel and wheelbarrow.

We don't ride on pavements, well us resposible ones don't anyway. If you walk on the road then it's your own fault I like to think that blind people wouldn't slip on it as they tend to walk on the pavements!

cant you get like big horsey nappy things??? think i seen the horse and carts with them??

i could say i dont need to lift my dogs droppings if she shits on the rd but i cant see that one standing up if i need to go to court for dog fouling??

next time my dog rolls in horse shit im takin her to the person responsible and they can bath her!!

not to mention if you drive over horse shit in the rd try gettin that off when you go to the car wash!!

its no different from dog fouling so it should be lifted somehow or disposed of somewhere a ditch or whatever! xx

They have to do it sometimes to get to the bridal paths.

But if they are on the back of the horse and in control of it, then it shouldn't be a problem.......but trying to control a one ton horse by one hand while picking up shit with a shovel wouldn't be very safe.

having worked with carthorses in the past yes it is possible to collect their poop.

a big sack attaches to their cart. what are we meant to attach it to if no cart? as for riding on a main road, where my horse is stables i have to ride part of a main road to get to the off road riding paths. i certainly dont like doing it but needs must

I ride in a small country area, I don't ride along main roads unless it's to get to a bridal path. I only do that when I have to or I'd be grey by now. I wear hi vis jacket an make sure my horse wears hi vis too. My ex has had more accidents on his motorbike than I have on my horse. I like to think I'm considerate to drivers and pedestrians when I'm out but wish they could often be polite and considerate to me. I love my hobby and wouldn't change it for anything else. If a bit of horse poop irratates then apologies but fook it cause I love riding!

Now where's the catalogue number for the deluxe rabbit...

We have a National Hunt trainer not far from us and they have horses on the roads most days of the week, it's not much of a problem for us, the only argument I have is that horses should be insured like any other motor vehicle.

As for the horse shit on the roads, it's a countryside hazard.....and a small one at that.

Personally I see it that if it's on a busy road and I go back afterwards to pick it up I could get hurt myself so it's staying where it is. If I have to go on a pavement due to large van or bus going past and my horse poops then I always do my best to go pick it up if it's outside someones house or on a pavement. I guess I'm lucky that we have lovely people living in the houses where I ride and most will pick it up themselves to use on their gardens.

If you have an animal, you should be responsible for all aspects of looking after it! If when in a town that means picking up the poop, then so be it! If you are not allowed to get off the horse to collect it, then you should have someone with you (on a bike?) to do it for you. It is not for others to clean up after you!

Whilst on the subject, we live on the edge of a town and regularly see children as young as eight on horses, on the road! If, as someone pointed out that they can kill someone in an accident, why are people under say 16 allowed to ride on public roads? It is not like a bike in as much as horses have a mind of their own and can be very willful!

Granted lots of folk folks ride a horse but some don't own it and maybe only ride it at the weekend, at the end of the day though, if you have a hobby eg a horse, enjoy it but also be prepared to clear up the crap that is left behind it .... that way everybody is happy

We only ever rode in fields. The stable was in the middle of a field and we had over 1000 acres to ride on. BUT... We did used to collect the poo! (for our benefit though ) lol

Quite simple really - the pikeys tethered their horses on land which also had public rights of way running through them - needless to say their horses are no longer there

Oohhh, would love to hear from someone who, like me, grew up going to the local stables to muck out in order that the owner would let me ride his ponies for free, realises that dismounting (if not actually illegal then and as I used to do it in 70/80/90s when lucky enough to have my own horses, shout into the local shop what I wanted and they brought it to the door) is at least problematic. A dog is a dog, you walk beside them; a horse is a beast with different sensibilities and a very different diet! Horseshit smells sweet and dissolves quickly - if your dog rolled in foxshit I can understand you complaining - you ever smelled that? - but who's gonna ban the foxes?

Oh and do we lose virginity/get sexual thrill riding? Don't be silly, just find a friend when you get to know and trust each other!

I know several farmers who do not own their own homes - they tend to be rented and they don't have new 4 x 4's - my dad had a farm when we were young - don't know where you get this idea from that all farmers are wealthy! Some must be but there are many who are not and it is a very hard life! Z

Our local farers tend to do that shit at 08:30 in the morning when I'm trying to get to my 1st job of the day - usually a hedge mowing machine or a tractor and trailor, or in the summer a combine harvester

I get the idea from experience of the local farmers in this area - yeah few of them are struggling and in fact have sold up, but the ones that are still in business, well one has his own light aircraft, and he pops off to France whenever the fancy takes him so life isn't so bad for him, the other actually gets paid to leave his fields baron and he reckons he's making more money doing that than he would if he planted the bloody things with wheat !!!!!

It's the subsidies that keep food prices down, if they didn't you would be on here moaning about high food prices.

When Poland joined the EU half their farmers left the country to take up labouring jobs in Germany and other parts of the EU...it almost crippled food production in Poland in just a few months, that is why pork prices almost doubled in the UK as imports from Poland almost dried up.

Trouble is it's not compulsory, which is the only problem I have with horses on the roads. If it was made compulsory like it is in many countries then it would be a great idea.

Perosnally I think if they are going to be using the roads, even just to get to the riding paths, then it should be compulsory........we can't drive without it, so they shouldn't be on the road without it.

And farmers shouldnt be allowed to use red diesel as well when driving from farm to field

Then pray tell me, what are they meant to do when driving their tractor along a country lane to an outlying field...drain the diesel tank first and top it up with road fuel?

Simple - Pay the same money as we all do, farmers, despite pleading hard done to, get more subsidies than we ever do"

Farmers get badmouthed, known them all my life and never known a dishonest or lazy one! Show me another profession who'll get up at 5am Every Day! Inc Christmas! Never! Not Ever! go on on holiday, realise that the only way to get a good yield is to treat your animals well!

And as it happens, horses were transport before your nice shiny car, they matter in a way your - my! - shiney car never will! Had this towny twat who recognised me and my horse, decided to give me a toot on his horn - Red (horse) freaked, kicked his lights in! Cost hundreds in vet's and farrier's bills and that was over 20 years ago!

How soul-less do you want this countryside? If you can't handle shit then I suggest suburbs might suit better??

That's setaside and hugely important as if you overwork land it will become barren unless you put lots of chemical fertilisers on it, also cross pollenation cannot occur if it's field upon field of similar crops!

Jeez, just seen that a volcano or 2 fooks flying, we are so close to relying on imported crops/meat! Get a grip, have a look and thank our farmers!

hi folks as a ex horse rider if i was out on any of my horses i would make sure the shit landed in the area were people did not walk on get off and welly it over the hedge.but if my horse shit nr house the peolpe wud ran out and shovel it up and put it on there roses and boy my horse made good flowers he he,also raising trot on a horse is like ridin a good guy, grip with yor knees. and hold on

love the sound of horses clp clopping along ,they were here hundreds of year before cars on the roads which is still known as the horse road .

The thing about dog crap is it has the potential to spread disease as its sometimes hard to see ,horse crap is massive and if you cant see it ,thats perhaps a worry ...as its also in the road it washes away quicker ..lets not go p.c or turn it into a class issue eh ...

being a country dweller horses are part and parcel of life and being off a pikey family im used to horses and country ways but a wee bit consideration goes a long long way!

we get horses goin round the scheme non pikeys and non poshers and the local kids mine included will go behind the horses baggin the crap then sell it to the local gardeners it works out good for all but the ones that dont lift it i could joyfully roll them in what their horse drops its not fair when someones mutt rolls through it and it does smell!!

as i said before if my dog shits i lift it as i dont fancy a fine or court appearance and as my dog is a yorkie its not exactly great amounts but its common courtesy!! xx

Agree with you there, especially when near schools and playgrounds - I love dogs but think there is an onus on us to clear up after them as I would clear up mess my kids made when they were younger.
