Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Will Mo be able to complete a full marathon in a competitive time?

He's collapsed after both half marathons totally spent.

He has completed over 20 with no problems in practice so I would guess if he takes it easy he won't have a problem after all even a 83 yr old completed the last one.

I'm sure he can complete but whether he does it at elite athlete times without collapsing?

I doubt he'll win it, though I'd love to see him manage it. If he runs it sensibly he'll be there or there abouts. But he also has the potential to fall apart like Paula Radcliffe in Athens.

I personally wouldn't read too much in to the collapses, it's not unknown in may endurance sports too push yourself that hard. It's significant that he's only collapsed after finishing. Which suggests he is adept at finishing having given it everything. The problem is this his first and running one in training and racing for the win are very different so if he misjudges it, it could go very wrong.

I think he is driven to always complete.

I'll miss it as I'll be on a train but I'll be checking online to see how he is doing at each marker.

If he wins today I'll eat my hat.

He's up against Wilson Kipsang, Stephen Kiprotich, Tsegaye Kebede, and Emmanuel Mutai. If you don't know anything about marathon running, these guys are some of the best of all time and Mo Farah is an amateur at the distance. Don't expect a miracle.

he has said its unlikely he'll win but he is looking at the British record.

I do think we put way too much pressure on people at these things...the whole build up about it etc

Not sure I agree with that - the British way in sport/life is always '"just do your best" and that's the wrong attitude when it comes to elite sport. You have to have pressure and expectation to fuel the fire of motivation.

Great conditions for marathon running today though - Gebreselassie is taking them along at quite a lick though. Farah is losing time at the moment.

The second group Mo stated in is looking at a 2:55 pace. That would still be at a world record pace

I believe the first group is going out too fast. That's why Mo isn't in it

He always said he was going to run his own race and see where he ends up - he knows he's not an elite marathon runner (yet) and can't keep pace with the front runners so we'll see. I can't see the leaders falling that far back given that they'll be around 2 minutes clear at halfway.

i think they decided to go off fast to test and see what mo would do.. which is smart, try to run the finish out of mo...

they wanted to see if they would go with them or run his own race..... remember that mo's pace makers are just about still there where at the front they have all but gone.....

as the front group start to peel off... mo can use each one as a pacemaker and pick them off

It's certainly a lot closer than it looked like it would be earlier on. I still think the front runners will pull away late on, in no small part due to their experience at the distance.

"Kipsang new course record, great run!

actually..... i wouldn't say that... I would say that mo isn't a "big city" marathon guy..

I think he would do well in an olympic marathon, no pace makers and they tend to be much more tactical....

that field was super strong, probably harder than an olympic field would be....

I would still like to see mo stick to 5 or 10k... maybe come back next year with a different strategy

as you saw with diababa in the womens race.. the transition from 10k to marathon is tough

Absolutely right on all fronts. Dibaba was a shame though since she dropped her water bottle and still kept up with the two leaders. She has it in her to win at the distance, I don't think Farah does, at least not in a city marathon. This was a bridge too far against an incredible field.

good!! they were so negative about him. i know (now!) that elite running is big business and people are running here for selection for the commonwealths etc but Mo wanted to run it and he ran it well.

I dont think for a second he thought that he would be picked as a marathon runner for any games, he just wanted a new challenge after the 5 and 10k races.

would mo win one of the big city "classics" like london, berlin, hamburg, new york, boston or chicago.... no... pacemakers will go out too quick and that suits the kipsangs of this world...

but olympic and championship marathons are different beasts... fields are not as good as countries are limited to 3 people per team... they are much slower and more tactical....

If Mo is going to run another marathon, I would like to see him actually go out with the leaders.... if he then gets dropped off then fine... but telling everyone you weren't going to go out with the leaders anyway has to give people an advantage.....

I don;t have a point beyond not agreeing with you. Not sure why you are taking exception to that?

So to clarify, top 10 in one of the finest marathon fields ever established, within a minute of the fastest ever British time, and sub 2hr 9 as a DEBUT is a performance that shows no potential as a marathon runner?
