"Regardless of editing, regardless of how representative it is, regardless of how difficult it is for some others in similar situations to play the system... it is wrong that anybody could ever be allowed to turn up, as these apparently did, and be given what they apparently were. I can see no sensible argument as to why they were able to." We can remember refugee families being shipped in and given local council houses .. and not only that but they got tehm fully furnished and carpeted and tellys, clothes and maybe even playstaions and the likes.. and that was as far back as 1990..

"What I'm worried about is that it's programming such as this and the likes of'Benefits Street' which are skewing the views of masses and playing right into UKIPs political manifesto. " Isn't that like saying Dragons Den, Secret Millionaire, The Apprentice might skew people's perception of rich people? If there was no story, there would be no story to tell. No politics could make this situation acceptable.

Are you saying no foreign national should be allowed benefits unless they have assumed UK citizenship ?

If you turn up in fear of your life needing refugee status that's different. I don't see the need for it to be complex.

It may stop benefits being drawn, but it will also result in ghettos being established and an increase in petty crime. The UK is about to experience what many countries in mainland Europe have experienced for years. Come away from the coast in Spain, Portugal or Italy and you will see it first hand. I have ... and the benefits system in those countries is nothing compared to what is offered here. We opened the borders and in they come. Benefits, or a lack of them, will not prevent them from entering the UK or from eeking out a living in whatever way they can. So, to me, your suggestion does not solve the problem. It just stops benefits. That is only part of the issue we face. As right wing as that sounds, I want to be part of Europe, I think that being part of the EU is right for the UK, but also feel that we should be part of an equal Europe. In embracing certain members of the Eastern bloc, any equality that did exist was lost at the stroke of a pen. Anyway on that note, time for bed

Isn't that like saying Dragons Den, Secret Millionaire, The Apprentice might skew people's perception of rich people? If there was no story, there would be no story to tell. No politics could make this situation acceptable." a) Programs like Dragons Den and its ilk are not tapping into the human emotions of indignation, fear, prejudice and 'moral superiority' by presenting their subject matter in a highly editorialised and manipulative way. They may has well have an hysterical Daily Mail editor shouting 'Look at these lot, stealing from you hardworking people who can barely afford to feed your children' b) No political party (with any airtime at least) is shouting 'Lets evict the rich' or 'Lets put up fences around Kent'. Im waiting for Nigel Farage to reference these documentaries in the UKIP Party Political Broadcasts, foaming at the mouth, shouting 'Look what Cameron did, Look what Brown did'. Farage might look like Beaker from the Muppets, but when the 'opiate of the masses' is stealthily reinforcing his party rhetoric with editorialised programs like this, we are heading into interesting times - especially given the lack of any credible single political party to vote for at the next election.

"The only way to regain control of our borders and legislature is to leave the EU. Membership predicates that we have to comply with free movement of goods, services and people. There is no middle way. MP's fiddling expenses is wrong. Corporations avoiding paying tax is wrong. Being forced to extend our generous benefits to EU nationals who have made no contribution to our economy is also wrong. As is being better off on benefits than those who work. There are lots of things wrong, but specifically on this thread issue, it's wrong. The only way to solve it is to leave the EU, as we'll never change the EU, whether in it or out. Personally, I think the EU will collapse as it cannot absorb so many weak economies. Idealistically, I was all in favour of joining, but the practical realities of membership have lead me to think that we'd be better off out of it." Pretty much agree with all of that, but although I would love to see the EU collapse I don't think it will. I think it is more likely to split on roughly a north east to south west line. I think it will start with the break up of the Euro, don't ever think that the Euro crisis is over, it's just sleeping for a while. The weaker economies have to face up to the reality that the Euro is doing immense damage and sooner or later one of them will break ranks and the domino effect will start. If not that scenario another beginning of the end could be that Germany finally loses patience and refuses to underwrite any more bail outs. Either way it will be the end of the Euro in its current form and the first step to the EU splitting. The second problem (which is a bit more on topic) is migration. Whether or not some people like to play the Ostrich and pretend the problem doesn't exist, it does. Only the other day the head of the Italian navy was reported as saying that illegal boat migration from Africa had increased by over 300% in one year, and described it as of "Biblical Proportions" he also estimated that over half a million are on the north African coast trying to get on a boat to Europe. Spain has a similar although smaller problem in the Canary islands and on the Med coast, and the eastern borders of the EU are porous to say the least. Most migrants, once inside the EU. do not settle in Italy or Spain but head north with the intention of settling in the wealthier countries such as Germany, France, Holland, and yes the UK. Whether it be in the jobs market, paying benefit, or providing housing and health care, these numbers cannot be absorbed. Youth unemployment in Greece and Spain is over 50% in Italy it is over 40% even France, once thought of as one of the richer EU countries, has over a quarter of its 18-24 year old's out of work, and not forgetting that Britain has around a million as well. Add into this mix the internal migration from east to west. Countries that were under the cosh of the Soviet Union for the best part of 50 years suddenly became members of the EU and with no restrictions other than a short transitional period had access to the rest of Europe. Who can blame people wanting to leave some of these former Soviet hell holes and head west? Pretty much everything was better, higher wages and benefits, better housing and health care, and for some easier pickings from crime. Which brings me nicely back to the OP. Romania has been given the title of the bogeyman from eastern Europe and its people have been castigated as criminals to a man. As someone who knows quite a few people from that country I have to say it is a little unfair. Most Romanians (and other eastern and southern Europeans) come to the west for honourable reasons, namely to work and find a better life, and the western countries can benefit from a limited number coming to work, it cannot however be open and unrestricted as it is at the moment. Some form of control has to be put in place. There is however another group which see the free movement of people as an opportunity for crime and benefit fraud. This group is the Roma. Aggressive begging, pick pocketing, prostitution, and general thieving is their culture and they make no secret of it. Children are forced into crime pretty much as soon as they can walk, and grand mothers and fathers that can't "work" any longer become the teachers. The Roma problem in Europe is becoming an epidemic. Try walking around the centre of Paris or Berlin, only recently the staff at the Louvre went on strike to try to force the police and government to do something about the Roma operating in the area. Here in Germany we have been victims of crime three times in just over a year, one house burglary, one office burglary, and one purse snatch. On all three occasions the police told us that it was 99% certain that Roma gangs were the culprits. Unless the EU can come up with some way of restricting Roma migration things are going to get an awful lot worse.

"I'm not so much angry at them as the retarded idiots that allow them all those benefits, let alone entry to the country. Even child benefit when their children still live in their home country ! Unbelievable ! " Yes and as we saw in the EU debates between Clegg and Farage the other week, Clegg tried to disguise this and pull to wool over people's eyes by saying it was only 1% of people claiming child benefit here for their children who live in another country. Farage pointed out that 1% amounts to thousands of people, (and 1% or 1000's of people is still too many). Clegg (and all the other EU loving political elite) still does'nt seem to get it though.
