Thanks to.the media a lot of people think they are all scroungers. I have seen both sides of the fence I'm an electrician by trade but gave up work to care for my mother who has fms and cancer now I rely on the state but am classed as a less then others,

But what most people fail to see is I'm saving the country 1000's if i didn't look after her they would have to fork out for 24 hour nursing I get some time off but not much but its my mum so I do it for love.

Its propaganda and bullshit.

The welfare bill may cost billions but actual unemployment benefit is only 10.75% of the total amount spent, what is the biggest pay-out is to pensioners followed by other benefits to top up low wages.

This means that employers are being subsidised by the taxpayer because they don't pay a living wage, and the govt dare not have a go at those at the end of their working life who have earned their pension.

So, they are misleading everyone and are turning society on itself by singling out a minority as a scapegoat for what ails the country.

If I had to sign on, Id have to get to a town 7 miles away. The nearest bus-stop is about three miles, the bus fare is nigh on a fiver....

If I had to do that every day, Id never have time to look for a job

Making people sign on every day will end up costing more as plenty of people have to travel to job centre as not one in their town so they can claim their. Travel expenses back. Our job centre closed down a few years ago so if I were signing on as I isn't have a car I'd have to get the train/bus which is about £6 return.

I shall be a pensioner in 29 days time and guess what I will be getting......£126.22 PW. I also get £21.00 PW Personal Independence Payment because of limited mobility and £48.00PW Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit because of being chemically poisoned in my last employment in 2008. I also invested in pension schemes while working up to 111 hours on nights and paying into the system. No not everyone are scroungers and those that are need catching..

If some needs benefits I haven't got a problem with that. What I have a problem with is the people that will never work and just keep breeding. My three children are going to end up working to support their 6 children. Times that by hundreds and you soon realise that this country will be fucked.... Even more than it already is...

Sort out benifits, immigration and over paid MPs and get this country back on it's feet...

I used to have family in Germany and when the father lost his job his unemployment benefit was way more than here.

And we don't have the benefits there used to be.

The average wage of £25,000 pays taxes yearly to unemployment the grand total of £56 and family & children £238.

The highest payout from your taxes goes towards Old Age, and that's £800.

It's all online showing the breakdown.

A lot of people claiming any sort of benefits actually do need that financial help. Don't tar us all with the same brush....my kids might actually be of assistance later in life to them who think we are scroungers!

The new system is a joke!

After working all my life and paying my taxes..I was unfortunate to start to have issues with my health and claimed Incapacity benefit and all was well..then I go on to have the ESA medical which they award me ESA benefit. Now the problem, I get this for the 1st year but after that I go on to means tested ESA, so they look at my family income..my wife is lucky to have a good job..so they punish me by taking my benefit away,even though I have paid for 30 years into the system, even worse I even payed tax on my Incapacity benefit and ESA as I was again lucky that I had an insurance policy to cover me for sickness while off work.

I expect to lose my car soon once I switch over to PIP, but I see another problem when I buy a car for myself and the insurance company then ask for my no claims and find I have had a mobility car for the past 6 years, bet they will load my insurance to death even though my condition means I do not have to inform the DVLA!

My point being if you pay in you do expect to get something back, when you are in need!!!!

The benefit system works, and works well for those in need.

But, like the MP`s expenses system there are those who will find ways of getting more than they are entitled to, and, other's Will get less than they should. The system needs to be overhauled, but in doing it the govt is going too far and is manipulative in the details they leak to the public by vilifying those who are the weakest and less able to defend themselves. There are very few people who do not have an insight into unemployment in this country, either from being unemployed themselves or having a friend or family Member unemployed.

The govt attitude of bashing scrougers by welfare reform is like chopping off your leg because you have an ingrown toenail and govt propaganda should be seen for what it is, selective information released to shape public opinion and make them turn on themselves whilst they do a less than satisfactory job of running the country.

Ok there are some how can not work which is what we pay tax for to help them but most are just lazy twats that have never had a job and don't won't one. i recently got let go from an apprenticeship scheme when the company went bust but when i was on an apprentice wage some people on benefits got just 5£ less than i did when i worked 38hours a week.

As I've said some people need benefits I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with people on benefits having 5 or 6 children with 4 or more partners, having never done a days work.

I have a huge problem with the fact that you can work your whole life and then fall ill or need care and you get no help and the government take what you have saved. Yet people on benifits or immigrants can get the same level of care having never paid into the system. When benefits were introduced it was to help the poorest of the poor. Not to pay for cars, tvs, xboxes, holidays etc...If the state pension still worked on the original system it would not be paid until people were well over 100 years old... That I don't agree with but benefits are often paid out to people who just can't be arsed...

I will get him to reply when he finishes work, would like to let u know I'm his gf n on benefits, don't want to be, posted in another thread, wrong thread by the looks of it - I am one of those "benefit scroungers" as u call them, I worked when I left school never out of work until I had kids, now I am looking for work, in the last 2 weeks I have applied to 6 jobs n not one reply, luckily I have a 2 week contract next week which hopefully end up full time. I want to be in full time work, earning my own money to buy my kids things, take them out, go out myself.

When you brand someone a lazy scrounge have you stopped to consider why they have stopped looking for work?

I was made redundant 18 months ago, I signed on and did everything they asked took all their advice and it resulted in nothing.

In 6 months I applied for 250+ jobs and I never got a single reply, I requested feedback from everyone I applied to and they didn't bother with that request either, I eventually got work through family contacts because the jobcentre was there Just to create work for themselves.

It's easy to slag people off for not trying but when you have been kicked in the guts by rejection after rejection you want to stop the pain and stop putting yourself through it by stop trying, that's why a lot of unemployment benefits claimants are not actively seeking work.

speaking as someone who is on benefits i dont want to be on benefits and i am not on them by choice it also doesnt help where we have programs like jeremy kyle and benefits street who paint us all in the same colour when that clearly isnt the case there is only a certain ammount of jobs and the ammount of people far exceed the ammount of available jobs so we are going to have people out of work what should be happening is the people who want to be on benefits because that cant be bothered to find work should be kicked off and the people who want a job should be helped and not discriminated and put down consistantly also the government spends 11 billion pounds every year on foreign aid which is extremely high when you compare how much other countries better off give they should stop foreign aid and start spending the 11 billion pounds each year on the employment sector that way companies would be in a better position to make jobs available and we would have a much better econemy as people would be in work and more financially secure but of course it will never happen the ammount of people in this country will always greatly exceed the ammount of work available

Those that sign on & work for cash - should be made to repay what they claim & shouldn't. Same as those who claim housing benefit & council tax benefit whilst working & really being ineligible for those benefits .

However - benefits are needed for the vulnerable in society! If we did away with it altogether there the most vulnerable would suffer. Such as the terminally ill who receive enhanced DLA, the widow who's lost her husband & is trying to bring up a child - I don't disagree with her receiving a widows pension. There are lots of other examples.

Those that play the system - should be brought to account. Being unemployed though - isn't always a conscious choice - jobs get made redundant & people need JSA to survive on whilst looking for work. In a family the children would suffer too if that benefit was removed. So it needs overhauling but there will always need to be a system in place to help the most needy.

It's a case that should be looked upon, on it's own merits. You don't work and pay into a system for YOU to draw it out should you consider it a need, or "want". It is there for all of US who pay into the system IF we need it according to government criteria. FFS it isn't a bank account where you put savings into.

You are almost correct. A large percentage of its turnover is classed as "hot" and hence will pay output VAT on this, and then it will claim back VAT on its purchases against this which will mostly be zero rated (minimal)...So a fairly hefty amount wings its way to the Treasury each year. Granted, its our money as the consumer thats being paid over. Its just a form of wealth distribution, rightly or wrongly ..

Sorry, but that's a misunderstanding of VAT.

VAT is a sales tax and so is paid by whoever buys the goods not whoever sells them. Saying a business contributes when it hands over VAT is akin to saying that they contribute when they pay the PAYE and nic that their employees have deducted from pay, disingenuous to say the least

I was on Benefits for a time my little boys dad upped and left one day and he was the bread winner so to speak so I had to sign on until I found a job that suited so yes I am for it as I needed it at one point.

No i don't like it and thats why i vote UKIP. Also as someone else already pointed out on the thread, if you are suggesting i leave the country, that would be emigration. Even though i was born here in the UK i did look into moving to Australia a few years ago, at least they have a sensible and controlled approach to immigration there, and are not dictated to by the EU.

I think everyone agree's some immigration is needed here in the UK, just no where near on the scale it is currently happening. The current policy of open door to the EU is just plain madness, and is having an effect on british workers not being able to get jobs when they do want to work.

Yes, but in reality this is a nominal amount, I'm surprised they haven't phased it out.

This discussion is a tricky one to be honest. Our perceptions of the benefits system are largely predicated on what we hear from soapboxing politicians and the media, it's hardly an impartial source of info. I agree that there are many people who cheat the system (I even know a few), and I also agree that some people really don't need to be on benefits.

But, for starters, there are many who really do need to be on benefits to sustain themselves. Unemployment is still high amongst certain demographics, largely because we live in a capitalist society, where it is how useful a particular individual can be to an employer that matters, and those unable to make the cut must languish. Sadly, this sometimes manifests as something as trivial as the fact a rapport has already been created between employer and prospective employee, because he knows his dad and is doing him a favour ,or some nonsense like that.

Moreover, it's almost as though people on benefits has become some kind of subculture, where entire generations are born, raised, and die on the dole. They know nothing else, and are either ignorant of or unable to obtain another, more self-sufficient life.

It's all rather gloomy, but to be honest, there isn't really a better way of managing things. We can't let those who have merely been unfortunate or made bad decisions in life to suffer the ordeal of destitution, yet in creating such a large welfare system, we have to acknowledge people who shouldn't be there will sometimes slip through. I would say the best remedy for any inefficiencies people believe there to be would be

a) do something to dispel the benefits culture that seems so prevalent in the UK. Make people who have been on benefits for a long time, and actually want to live independently, believe they can aspire to more, and spend more money on training these people with apprenticeships rather than just forking out every week.

b) Introduce stricter methods of assessing who is eligible for such benefits. I know for a fact that many people are unfairly claiming. I even know people who have immigrated here for the sole purpose of receiving benefits!

And to those who say "how can we afford this all?" I believe the government has FAR more money than we are led to believe...we hear them complain of a recession, but oddly, they seem to have plenty of money to meddle in the affairs of other countries, claim outrageous expenses, and generally act in a devious manner.

I worked from the age of 16-34. I was diagnosed with arthritis and fibromyalgia at the age of 32 I have also had depression and anxiety from the age of 10. I worked in care all my life.

I was signed off by my GP at 34 when I became a single mum due to domestic violence. I claim benefits but if I could get a job with all my health problems I would, but no one will employ me. Plus I would need to find child care for an 8yr old, not easy or cheap.

So before you slate people on benefits OP think about it first.

Mental health problems I have are not due to a bad hair day or running out of milk ( this is what the asseser called my depression ) it due to years of child abuse, having psoriasis,my health problems and abusive husbands.

im not complaining about immigration at all then reason I cant get an inter_iew is that ive had a sixteen year custodial sentence thats my barrier too employment Ive various qaulifications ie fitness instructor massuer and many other vocational qaulifications but im still unable too find work and its nothing too too do with mass imigration and as for being in this century fucking right I am this country is in a time of austerity but we can always find some dough too bomb a fcking despot who is a cunt too the westso we bomb them then destroy there country so we can sell arms and rebuild there country on are democratic model

It's called National Insurance for a reason..it's an insurance policy for when you are unable to work through loss of job, or ill health/disability. I would hate to pay my house insurance to find out that because my wife had a job they didn't pay out but someone up the road hadn't bought house insurance was paid out because they were in need !!!!!

This is the beginning, what if they said to people who had a private pension sorry you cannot have your state pension, you got loads of money saved up, but the bloke across the road didn't go to work so he'll have yours!!!

Finally what do you know about my NEED for the money? The fact is if you have a spouse that has a job (with only a relatively modest income) you won't get any ESA after a year.

I did 10 years caring for my disabled sister from the age of 25. With 3 children and an abusive husband I can tell you it was hard. Losing those career building years didn't help and it took it's toll on me physically. People don't see the person behind the benefit

i dont think anyone objects to the benefit system but what we all object to is the fraudulent misuse of the system. time and time again we hear of those who are claiming invalidity benefits while they are out working etc this is just wrong. i for one have no objection whatsoever for my taxes to be used to help those in genuine need but i do object to those getting handouts because they are too lazy to go out and work and i think it is wrong that people can be better off on benefits than actually going out to work. rant over x

However the benefits are still a good thing I've worked all my life since 14yrs old,over the years I used ssp for a operation,maternity pay for 2babys and now for first time a year ago as husband left,I'm getting one third my rent paid and little child and working tax credit for one child

I'm still working but without two wages coming in I need assistance,I'm not taking the Mick out the system,there there to help people when they need it.I've never been out of work as qualified I jump straight into more work even when made redundant or have moved.I just don't earn anough to support a family on my own,so in my case I need them,and as I do work I drive a banger and always skint but surviving that's the main thing

So don't knock it there may be a time where you have to use it

Maria miller has just made a cool million from the sale of her home in Wimbledon which the tax payer funded.and she is still in her job even though she over claimed by 46 thousand and of which she has only too pay 5.800 back is this fair? The point I'm trying to make is not about me but others who may have worked hard, paid into the system, but if their spouse has a modest income, they will not get any help with their disability. I was using my own experience to try to show this..for me it is irrelevant..I would not receive anything after a year because of my own income from my employers insurance policy, who thankfully also give me extra for the money I do not receive from the Government, but I am still disabled, paid in get nothing out...Think I need to be a politician so I can get my second mortgage paid!!!!!!
