There are 3 basic technologies for delivering broadband to the home

Cable (supplied exclusively by Virgin), standard DSL & Fibre To The Cabinet (sold as Infinity by BT Wholesale).

Cable is from a technology viewpoint a more robust and stable medium as it does not rely on pairs of twisted copper, on the downside you have no choice in who provides it.

DSL relies on copper all the way from the exchange whilst FTTC only relies on copper for the last mile (actually normally 4-750 meters) which makes FTTC a faster and more stable medium than DSL.

With both DSL & FTTC the underlying copper is owned & maintained by BT Openreach however you can choose which ISP you wish to use to provide service.

Some uch as TalkTalk, O2 & SKY have their own equipment at the exchange whilst others piggyback on BT Wholesales equipment.

SO the bottom line is with the exception of cable the quality of your broadband depends primarily on the quality of the copper. The only difference between the ISPs is what they charge, what usage restrictions they put on you & what their customer service is like.

or to put it another way if you have dsl on a 3-5km line in an area that was laid with lower grade aluminium rather than copper by BT in the 1980's then your connection is likely to be shit regardless of who you buy from

You are right but some people think the brand name makes much difference when in reality its only customer service that changes.

sorry should have added if you live in Hull then you have no choice but to use Kcom as when the industry was deregulated back in the 80's they kept the local phone company. BT & Virgin have no cable/copper over there.

Oh to have a choice

Living in the back of beyond, the only provider to me that is llu, is talk talk

All the rest are bt resellers

And bt in their wisdom took me off my nearest box, and put me on one 5 miles away, so can't even get FTC

And there's every chance that a lot of those "BT" resellers are actually reselling TalkTalks services ;o)

According to samknows Ballymena exchange is also enabled for O2 & Sky . I would also say AOL ut thats actually owned & operated by TalkTalk these days

Not even sky can help. It's so bad here I'm looking at getting satellite. It's the start up cost that's holding me back

I see that the welsh assembly give grants for satellite installation in their rural areas .

Central

Im on a no notice period contract, but thinking of switching to a fibre to the cabinet deal, probably with BT. I like my current lot, staff in the Uk, always easy to get hold of and great to speak with. Had tesco once, but was not that impressed then - think theyre probably better now. I prefer short minimum term contracts but want high speed and at a good price. Not interested in tv and extra package deals though.

Ours is Talk Talk. Supposed to be super fast, fibre optic, bla, bla,... At times, its still no faster than our old original dial up ! We paid extra for fibre optic, thinking it would solve all issues. Its bunkem in our case. Totally unsatisfied.

Biker mike, you are giving me an education here. We're with orange DSL, but it's still the BT connection we're getting right? Our internet really is shocking, and I feel bad for all the hours we've spent shouting at the orange people now. But is there a way to find out if there is aluminium in my area instead of copper?

I have Virgin 100mb. Initially it was a little unstable but ubsoon discovered that the router was set-up by default on channel 11, I changed it to channel 6 and it's been super stable ever since and I regularly see speeds in excess of 100mb. Virgin are increasing speeds in the next few months too, for free!

Wot he said...

Their customer service is pretty dire but given that nothing ever goes wrong with the service to require me calling them, it's a moot point.

Probably wouldn't be with them if it wasn't paid for by Mrs JFL's company though, as it's ludicrously expensive.

Yeah, it is a bit pricey, there's no denying that.

I've had good experience with their customer services. I've had 3 TiVo boxes develop faults and they have usually turned up with a new box within 24hrs and discounted my bill for lost service too.

With very few exceptions, its Openreach engineers who fix your line if you have a problem, no matter who you are with.

The delay is usually down to your Communications provider not interacting with Openreach in a timely or efficient manner.

By law, all customers, no matter who they pay their bill to, must be treated equally, so it doesn't matter who you are with, your fault will be dealt with in the order in which it is reported.

I'm with Plusnet who seem to be the must customer-friendly of the BT re-sellers, even though they mistakenly deleted my account and connection last year...

But all this talk of 50 or 100 GB? Haaaa...!

I live half-way up a Welsh mountain and on a good day I may get 2 or even 3 GB....

I am convinced that transmission to me does not involve copper wires, but somehow in encoding the data onto a passing sheep in the vague hope that the same sheep will wander past my door and pass it on....

What PlusNet neglect to tell people is that they are actually a 100% BT Wholesale owned subsidary rather than a Reseller

Good old Equivalance. I've never know BT Openreach give priority to BT Wholesale

Llanelli isnt one of the areas thats riddled with it to the best of my knowledge but a lot will depend on how far
