Some music is just too good to have cover versions done. Leave them to the original artist.

Take for example "love will tear us apart". Sang by Ian Curtis it is the greatest recording of the last century. It pisses in the Beatles pockets and laughs in the face of Abba.

Then you get Paul Youngs version. No pain is greater. He murders it.

Singers...know your limits.

Agreed if you are trying to copy the original it usually falls well short, but when artists put their slant on a track and make it different then sometimes it can work

There is a great bossa nova cover of Love will tear us apart by Nouvelle Vague: it is so different from the original that it is worth a listen

The greatest recording of last century in your opinion. It's not even close to some of Joy division other tracks let alone other artist in the 20th century in my opinion.

As far as cover versions go I tend to agree with you, unless an artist takes a song and puts a complete new style/spin to it. A great example is the Manic's version of Rihanna's 'umbrella'.

Their cover of Too D*unk To Fuck by The Dead Kennedys is also worth a listen - as is their Making Plans For Nigel. In fact, the whole first Nouvelle Vague album is great and I'm speaking as one who's a bit of a musical purist that thinks the original version of a track is the definitive by default.

My blood boils whenever I hear the most recent cover of "Word Up". - Can't remember the name of the girl band but it's everywhere at the moment and it's atrocious.

I have to admit though that I much prefer Muse's cover of "Feeling Good" to the original... So I guess I'm a hypocrite.

I disagree on the fact the original is always the best (Jimi Hendrix's version of All along the watchtower, a few Santana's, Valerie by Amy Winehouse, etc.)

But yes, even if the last albums are a tiny bit less interesting (the concept is used by everyone now!), Nouvelle Vague made some incredibly good covers!!

I like a lot of cover bands. Hayseed Dixie and the Bosshog are two of my current favourites.

Ska music has a good tradition of covering songs many of which are very good efforts.

The Jolly Boys latest album of reggae covers is excellent especially their version of Blue Monday.

But back to the OP. I suggest anything sung by Paul Young is going to sound shit regardless of whether it's a cover or not.

I've heard a couple of great versions of love will tear us apart over the years.I couldn't name the covering artists. I would've heard them on 6music most likely. I can't recall any one covering The Beach Boys. I don't think I'd want to hear a Beach Boys cover. Anyone remember All Saints version of under the bridge?

Two good examples of cover versions that worked are, live and let die, by Guns n Roses, and She's not there, by Santana. Both better than the original, in my humble opinion.

Lol, one day you'll get so old you might start to look back further than the music of your own generation. Have you not heard an artist you like cite who influenced them and then gone and looked back??

I fell in love with Prince when I was 11, I looked at some of his personal influences and soon ended up listening to Carlos Santana, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zepellin all of whom he said influenced him.

I know loads of music from the 50s and 60s but was born in 74.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a music connoisseur..but my Music of Choice is mostly Oasis with a bit of House/Trance chucked in.

I'll listen to anything, but I'm not massively interested in what inluenced who as I might not like the Influence that influenced it which might and/or could totally spoil it if I knew.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a music connoisseur..but my Music of Choice is mostly Oasis with a bit of House/Trance chucked in.

Personally Queen songs will always be Queen songs and no one else should touch them. Like Meat Loaf amongst a few others, some songs are so amazing they should never be messed with.

Take for example "love will tear us apart". Sang by Ian Curtis it is the greatest recording of the last century. It pisses in the Beatles pockets and laughs in the face of Abba.

Then you get Paul Youngs version. No pain is greater. He murders it.

Singers...know your limits.

I've heard a couple of great versions of love will tear us apart over the years.I couldn't name the covering artists. I would've heard them on 6music most likely. I can't recall any one covering The Beach Boys. I don't think I'd want to hear a Beach Boys cover. Anyone remember All Saints version of under the bridge? "

Ah, this is the one I meant earlier when I said.

There was a Godawful cover of the Chilli Peppers 'Under The Bridge' by a bunch of nobodies.
