Why do dogs have to have the same booster jab every year?

People are immunised once in their life and our body builds a natural immunity.

I can't believe animals are any different.

you do have to have boosters for some things.

I have flu jabs every year but that because of different strains.

tetnus has to be done every so often or instance

You are meant to have boosters every year for pets but there has been a debate over whether it should be 2 years now

I do feel its a money making exercise. In the wild animals wouldn't receive boosters. Immune system builds up a resistance.

You are wrong with your basic premise. There are very few vaccines that give full life cover to humans.

And the perfect example to prove how wrong you are is tetanus, if you need medical treatment for an infected cut the first thing you get is an anti-tetanus jab which is a booster that you are told will require renewing in 3 years.

I can only say if our bodies immune system doesn't encounter the virus we ve been immunised against it 'forgets' and the antibodies aren t produced its why we have boosters, why animals need them annually I m guessing its there immune systems work differently

or the vets like the money,,

this as a guy who has kept working terriers and lurchers for over 20 years and having a stepmother that is a vet of over 40 years and now works specifically with racing greyhounds, I jab pups at 10 and 12 weeks then never again, iv had working dogs that have lived until 16 yrs plus

I'm 57 in a couple of weeks time. I had my jabs when I was a kid. I've had the odd tetanus jab since then but nothing for about 20yrs.

I've never had a flu jab and I suppose I'm lucky I enjoy good health.

My dog is a mongrel lurcher, fit a fook and in great shape.

Now I can understand pedigree poochies having weak systems, just the same as there are sickly people around.

I still think its a rip off

We go away on holiday regularly and have to put our dog in kennels. The kennels wont take him unless he's jabbed every year.

If you look on your vac card you will see little stickers with different letters on. The boosters are different each alternate year . I am not at work now so I cant ask the vet the differences . we are now doing another vaccine for lepto4 . which is done 4 weeks after the last vac .

It is best they are done. to keep them safe

I could do with a booster jab. Should I get a card and put stickers on it whenever I get a jab?

If you kennel your dog and it picked something up from another dog at the kennel you might get a tad upset. You know how you look after your dog but you can't guarantee others look after theirs in the same way.

Scarlet Fever is on the increase in the UK because people ignore the symptoms and carry on. People are daft and might be daft about ignoring the hacking cough coming from their dog.
