I'm quite a banana fan, but remember hearing an older relative say she never had one when little because they weren't available in wartime, and spent years kinda dreaming of them. Then when she evntually did have one she was really disappointed & couldn't see what all the fuss was about them. She only found out quite some time later that you are meant to peel them.
