Never in real life

Is anyone else fascinated by the way people on the forums launch really personal abusive attacks on posters because they don't agree with their _iews or are offended because they are part of the sub group the poster was commenting on? I'm comparing it to real life, would those same people walk up to someone in a pub and call them vile and ignorant because they happen to have a different voiced _iew to themselves? Probably not I think. Hiding behind a keyboard and yelling abuse or having what can be construed as simple bickering in a forum seems to be the norm and you would never see it in the real world. All fascinating stuff, I wonder if Sydney university have noticed it ?

To some extent, people are still figuring out what is and isn't appropriate when writing on the net. It's like a digital poison pen letter, for years many people have found it easier to write their venom on pen to paper than communicate face to face. The fear of rejection of ideals and opinions may be part of the problem for certain trollers. Another thing is, the internet is very fast, people want to get their _iews out there giving less time for reflection on whats been written, that said, the internet has allowed society to be whoever they want and it'll be sometime before the trollers start realising there's a person behind the words of whats been written.

This is an interesting thread! I agree people are more forthright in communicating their _iews. They are also more honest as they have anonymity. I do laugh sometimes when I read a big hairy bloke's post who agrees with a sexy young woman, in the misguided hope he will get into her panties!

when I moved to London from Ireland I used to greet people on the street and talk to them on the tube. This is just politeness where I am from but I soon realised that you also have anonymity in big cities. It is like the internet and people can be (and are) as rude as they feel like being!

So, anonymity breeds rudeness? !

I don't get offended by words on a screen. If people can only communicate in an immature way, calling names etc then it's a shame but it doesn't bother me.

Debate is good though. No need to resort to childishness just to get a point across.

Debate is what I crave and that's why sometimes I post something controversial, to get a debate going. Unfortunately it is often hijacked by someone getting their knickers in a twist and launching a personal attack. I'm happy to debate any subject from any _iewpoint. I can argue for or against because to me its the debate that's important, the dissecting of an argument, the peeling away the layers of bluster to get to the truth. Maybe a swingers site forum isn't the best place to take part in a balanced exchange of _iews???

Works both ways I think.

There are people on here who come out with things (often fairly shocking) that they would never dream of saying to someone's face, also there are people who would tell those people that they are total bellends who prob won't say boo to a goose in the real world.

Maybe not, but it's still good when a proper debate gets going and no one ends up spoiling it for the rest of us.

even as we speak studies are being carried out on why people behave as they do online. I think we all crave a bit of power, even if we won't freely admit it. What better way to exercise that power than in a place where there is absolutely no comeback other than words. You can rip someone to shreds and then disappear.

That's my theory anyway. Probably complete bollocks lol

the problem with some is they feel their opinion is the only one that counts.

and they are right

whether they are or not

and the last bastion of an uneducated person is to get aggressive, abusive and swear.

these people couldnt arrange a coherent thought in their own heads, let alone have the vocabulary to verbalise it.

do i get upset? no, i get a little annoyed when people dont see reason, but it doesnt upset me. i just log off and move on.

there are people on here i have a lot of time for, and can have a decent conversation with them, as well as a saliant argument.

they are the only ones i tend to interact with

Oooh two posts a bit above, startlingly similar avatar pics!! Just different colour knickers.

Very interesting and an entirely new phenomena. Or did people think the same about the telephone, or going back even further the postal service? You could write something to someone and remain completely anonymous if you wanted. I think it's cyclical. When things start to become common place they lose their glitteryness, their appeal to the people who would use them to vent. How many people write poison pen letters now?? None probably, they have moved onto online bullying. What will be next!

I feel a lot of insulting comments come from ignorance. They parrot opinions of others and make judgements. I have deleted my own comments after reading a post because I don't know enough to make a fair comment

I think the difference between sending a poison pen letter and the Internet is people love the fact that the recipient sees what they have to say almost immediately and has a chance to get all offended and reply immediately too! Makes it much more enjoyable for the keyboard warriors no doubt.

I've been guilty of it myself, seeing something someone's written that's totally ridiculous or offensive and gotten on my high horse, I'm learning though, someone commented something about me earlier today that I could of really gone off one one about as it was insanely stupid but I stepped away from my phone for 5 minutes until I chilled out enough to reply lol x

I read somewhere that people want to belong to a group, even if it's subconsciously, so we tend to copy whatever the group is doing. It's got a name but for he life of me I can't think what's it's called. Basically, it's mirroring the behaviour of others in order to be accepted and protected by the group. Goes back to when we were busy running away from dinosaurs and the best way to survive was in numbers.

That's it! It's called Calibration. We subconsciously calibrate to the group

An opinion is one persons thoughts. It should be open to debate as no two people should really share the same opinion.

Although there's no need to be abusive at the same time.

I've noticed one or two regular forum users who seem to regularly wind people up and are a tad rude however, things like sarcasm and dry wit are lost in written text so they may not mean things exactly as you read them. If it gives them pleasure being a little obtuse or belittling of other users then its a little sad. Not nice to thrive on putting others down but hey ho, its the internet, its not real is it?!!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

My sister tells me I have an abrupt written manner for e-mails and text messages. One of my oldest friends on here tells me that my messages are harsh and until you get to know me.

Communication is always at least two ways - what you say/write and what the other hears/reads. We interpret and for characters we don't know we assign tone and voice to them that they may not intend.

As for the ganging up idea that raises its head on here I have witnessed exchanges looking like that. I say looking like that because a lot of posts are all made at the same time saying similar things. All of those people did not get together and collectively decide to post the same thing on the thread about the OP. When it gets repeated endlessly after initial posts in the first 5 minutes then it can be tiresome and there are some bullies, of course.

I like a debate on here but the forum appears to be in a phase where it's not what most people want so they don't happen. It's not the end of the world.

Im happy to state my opinions, usually with any reasoning. But it is fair to keep the opinions to topic, rather than about people. If someone asks for advice, give it, if it is constructive and youre supportive. It degrades sites if people become inflammatory. As others state, people emulate styles of behaviour, so it is good for us all to keep our fab as fabulous as it can be.
