So, the last day of campaigning has seen all three main parties trying desperately to open the gap between themselves and the other two. What has actually happened is that the gap between Labour and the Conservatives has closed at the expense of the Libdems!

The last Poll of Polls before Election Day puts the parties on the following percentages:

Labour: 29%

Conservatives: 35%

Liberal Democrats: 26%

Others: 10%

What this means in terms of projected MPs is:

Labour: 270

Conservatives: 269

Liberal Democrats: 79

Others: 32

A Labour win by 1 seat! But no majority, which means a hung parliament!

Clegg has said he refuses to work with Brown, so will Labour try to form a minority government? Maybe, but it will be unworkable considering the differences between them and the other two. There's no chance of a coalition between Labour and the Tories so that leaves Cameron to try and form a coalition government with the Libdems.

The country cannot be without government and Brown cannot resign his government unless an alternative is in place and accepted by the Queen. The people cannot be 'ungoverned'. If the Conservatives and the Libdems cannot work together then another election must be called and Brown will remain Prime Minister until it's outcome is determined.

It is very very close!

I think they have over done it... and it will all close up....

I think you will find a lot of labour supporters who will not be able to bite the bullet and vote conserative.....

actually... the most interesting thing for me is going to be the turnout....

if the turnout is high, it will break towards the lib dems...

if there is a high youth vote again it will break towards the lib dems....

traditionally... in times when labour is struggling... in low turnout places, the conservatives get there support out, the labour support tends to stay home!

as the late great richord prior once said in the film brewsters millions none of the above .god help the party that wins this election they have no money to work with and the only option is to cut ,cut and cut again.i would be surprised if any of the parties realy want to win given the impossible task that awaits them.

The plan was to post this thread at midnight'ish but the other thread was taking too long to load.

I had a thought about turnouts earlier (no, I wasn't sitting on the toilet at the time)

... This argument about a winner of an election winning on 35% of the vote which is in itself only based upon 60% of the electorate actually voting. If my maths serves me right, 35% of 40% = 14% of those that actually voted. Now, here's where I've been pondering it. If the 40% that didn't vote, didn't vote because they don't care who wins then it's reasonable to assume that they are satisfied with the encumbent government, not happy, but satisfied at least. That makes the winning parties share percentage much higher: 14% of those that did vote + 40% that didn't = 54%.

As for Osbourne as Chancellor, I'm inclined to agree with you there. I watched three candidates for Chancellor on TV the other day and of them, Darling is by far the more astute, Cable would claim credit for the Titanic sinking if he thought he'd get a vote out of it, and Osbourne is a Cameron sycophant (I think he's in love with him).

bloody fairies have been in here....

its hard to calculate it all out and opinion polls etc are only so much of a guide, will be very interestin to see what "safe" seats etc go.

i know a local area near to me was under tory local authority and they made some terrible decisions regarding cuts and i think this will backfire on them majorly and it was a tory safe seat xx

I think it's outragious that people can't register to vote closer to the election. Some teenagers turning 18 two weeks beforte the election are being denied the right to vote because of it. What if you move house and want to vote?

They need to ensure that those eligible to vote are given every chance to do so, even if it mean someone putting in a bit of O/T to sort it out.

Cameron had to move the Conservatives to a more central position politically as he knew that remaining on the right would keep them unelectable. What you think of as Thatcherism has no place in modern Conservatism and it is not Cameromn identifies with in any way whatsoever. Watch the guy, read about him. He may be well born but he's for the people, I'm convinced of it. Clegg is more royal than the Queen!! His line goes back to Richard the Lionheart, various Russian Dukes and a couple of Kraut Counts.

(Clegg & Cameron are 16th cousins, which means they share the same g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-grandparent)

I'm telling you hon, they're not the same party that you remember. A lot of policies are similar but they are a lot more centre now, which is why the Libs are more willing to do a deal with them instead of Labour. Liberalism is traditionally centre, Labour is left and Conservatism is right, but not anymore, it's all moved about. Cameron knows that if he tried to endorse old school Thatcherism he'd been out on his arse, and I'd have been the first to put the boot it. I voted for Blair to kick them wankers out and if I thought for a moment they were the same they'd never have got my vote. xx

well notice that after "the chancellors debate" you haven't really seen much of Osbourne at all......I think they have locked him away so he can't bodge it up....

anyway.... seat to the west to me is a lib/lab marginal..... seat to the south of me is a lib/lab marginal..... even the two seats north of the river from me are half decent contests..... me... live in one of the safest seats in the country.... and a donkey could wear a red rosett here!!!

I am such a betting junkie i managed to get a bet on how many seats the lib dems would get.... I bet on 85-90,

got good odds as well......

what i have noticed this campaign is that i havent had the usual amount of flyers through the door?

only had 1 from cons none from labour (for a safe seat very unusual!) none from lib dems or any other party?? cost cuttin?

the european election had bloody loads but this time very very little? xx

I saw something about that on tele earlier. Some boff was on saying that if you lived in one of the target constituencies you would know it as you'd have received enough leaflets to wallpaper your front room lol.

We've had three Labour leaflets, one Libdem and one Tory but this is a Labour fortress and if you see the breakdown after the results come in you'll notice my one Tory vote lol

well thats usually what happens here you could fill the blue bin twice with the amount you get but this time hardly any!

i wondered if maybe the dog or kid was puttin them off comin up the garden with them but a lot of people i spoke to said the same and we not had the same amount of canvassers or the guy with the loudspeaker or that which i find very strange for a general election x

FFS just as i had made my mind up!!

I'm just going to shut my eyes and rotate my arm in a circular motion then put an X where my pen lands on the voting card.

The facts are Cameron took tax payers money he shouldn't have to sooth his mortgage. Now based on this information its fair to say he will take tax payers money to help his supporters in the future. Tax havens for all the uber rich no doubt and make the poor, old and others who don't vote due to apathy.

Well 150 of them are not re-standing this time. I presume it's shame that's made them stand down. Voting should be compulsory but it should be easier and cheaper for independents to stand.

Well the cameras missed my vote, I did have to slip out the back though!

Did the local election as well and was surprised to see that Labour did not even have a candidate in the ward! UKIP and the Greens managed it though; did wonder why I did not get any labour junk though the door but surprised they just gave up. LD council strong hold though.

And yes, I voted for a hung Parliament!!

Down the blues and reds, on with the fun!

Best politics we have had in years!

Almost a much fun as the SDP split years back.

649 are being contested today. It should be 650 but an MP died a few weeks ago and a by-election is to be held in that constituency in a few weeks time. According to the BBC.

I think ours is one of them. This ward was Tyneside North at the 2005 election but this year it's Gateshead.

I know there are 4 seats that are not being contested, the Speaker of the House is one, his two deputies account for two more, not sure about the other.

The 1987 election saw both Labour and the SDP fields candidates against the Conservative speaker, Bernard Weatherill, and in 2005 the SNP put up a candidate against the encumbent Speaker, Michael Martin. A clear breach of protocol but not in itself illegal.

The electoral roll is derived from the last census isn't it? I know that failure to complete the census can result in a fine of £1,000, is that what you're referring to?

A PARTISAN crowd of union members made life difficult for election candidates in Peterborough on Monday evening.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) held a hustings at the John Clare Theatre, in Broadway, featuring six of the seven candidates standing for the Peterborough seat.

As expected, Labour candidate Ed Murphy and bus driving Independent John Swallow secured a favourable reaction from the crowd, while Conservative Stewart Jackson and Liberal Democrat Nick Sandford had a more testing time.

Green Party candidate Fiona Radic received a warm reaction to her views on a safe economical future in Britain.

She said: “We can no longer rely on exporting financial services to keep our economy going, we need to bring back agriculture and manufacturing to ensure a better future for this island.”

The candidates, including UKIP’s Frances Fox, also debated the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) that is paying for the new £335million super hospital.

Some people suffer under all governments

Me personally was basically comfortable under the Tories (and no i ain't rich and never have been)

However under labour i have seen crippling stealth taxes and petrol prices and my business is all but bust

(because my and a lot of my fellow gas fitters customers have put things off cause they cant afford)

So i understand the comments of some who have a little easier life under labour but am sorry to say its never been like that for me

If there is a Lib/Lab pact then we will have a government elected on lies and underhand deals. Clegg stated publicly in the first debate that he will NOT work with Labour, he then reiterated that later by specifying he wouldn't work with Brown personally.

So for a Lib/Lab pact one of two things must happen:

1) Clegg must go back on his word.

2) Labour must replace Brown.

My parents are likely to die in the next 5 years, between them worth millions, they were that lucky generation, jobs for life, bought a property for less then 10 grand, now worth loads! I'll pay inhertiance tax happiily having got working/child tax credits when I needed them!

Well Labour twice the Conservative vote here but surprised me, almost 10 times the Plaid Cymru vote! But then this is the little country that gave you the NHS! I still put it up and something I am going to have to face in the next few years: Inheritance tax; I have nowt and my brothers have little; my parents were that lucky generation. Should I be happy to give away 40% in recognition of being able to live courtesy of child/working tax credit? My answer is Yes! Not everyone will have the benefit of parents who did ok largely by accident of birth!
