Danny Baker's autobiography mentions his dad doing a similar thing with the meters in their flat. Apparently his dad believed everyone was 'approachable' and so the meter had some dark work perpetrated on it. Whenever the chaps came to read it, his dad negotiated with them and some money changed hands. Come the day the meter was replaced, his dad opened it up, started rummaging and got blown 12' across the room in a flash....
