Brummies say mom which was a curiosity to me as an outsider as I saw it as an Americanism.

In Salford I think a lot say mam but id still get a slap at 40 of I tried it.

Mum for me

Besides having to find a card that doesn't gush about how she's the most wonderful mum in the world, cos I don't think she is, I was astounded to see a mothers day card from "The Little Bump" A card from your unborn child??? What else will they dream up to take money from the witless?

I've waited 5 long years for this baby - with 5 weeks to go, I'm just missing Mothers Day this year . I'd love a card like that - I don't think it makes me witless.....

On topic - mine is Mum mostly but I did pick up the Brummy way when I lived there but *Him* is beating it out of me

agreed! I found one, once. It was a naff card but had to get it simply because of that word! 'Mum' just seems weird to me! It's a northern thing? C always mocks me for my accent and random dialect that slips out still!

It's all about squeezing as much money from as many people as possible for companies like hallmark.

I got a clout if I called my Mum "Mam" as I was told that was what the slum kids said!!!

(same as dummies and bottles were not used by "our sort")

Heaven forbid if she saw a woman smoking in the street!!

Just look at me now Mam!!!

Hello everyone

I am from America...( I I know it sucks but someone's gotta live here in this godforsaken place of perpetual sun and and all over tans.) and I always call my mother mom. I would get slapped silly this I referred to her either way. which I did of course growing up. but only out of earshot of her.

Was confusing you with some guy that messaged me about a thread I'd posted on who indicated he wasn't from these shores.

Still, I agree, that is very formal for this country. Unless you come from the upper classes?

I struggled to find a mother's day card for my mum as I gagged on the untrue in her case, wonderful, gushing bollocks. She'd have thought I was taking the piss anyway.

My girls call me mum, my eldest mummy when she's being endearing. 31 years a mum and the word when spoken by the girls still makes me go all soppy.

Mummy up until I started work .. the girls weren't very kind and took the micky all the time..very cruel .

She was not happy to become Mum at all. Did not understand how mean people were to me.

Cant understand why there are not many options for names Mam is popular up north.
